Younger orchids adapt faster & easier than older orchids. Sometimes older orchids don't adapt and consequently are returned to medium.

Thanks so much for the video. I thought I was the only one with the problem. Just today, I cleaned them up and ,eave them to dry til tomorrow. Some of my orchids were rescued from the store who were about to be thrown away at the end of last summer. I lost some but, I have a few who already bloomed and others who are very healthy. I’m still learning and hopefully watching your videos I will be more aware of their care. Thanks again, it was very helpful. Blessings and be safe.

Danielle, there is something so vulnerable and emotionally attuned about you, sometimes you seem almost sad. And then your love of orchids.. I am at the same place as you today, or atleast I feel what you feel. There is such solace in watching something grow roots, something that wasn't much more ancient than ourselves in evaluation. I say this is not easy to Trump even if bark media does come off as the "doctors,' prescription" kind of authoritative go-to..(or leca, moss ete etc). You go girl.. you go... Just do you

I love your video and you explain everything perfectly. Especially the details about when an orchid has one long root and a bunch of short ones. Haha! Found myself in that situation once or twice. It's like taking care of an infant lol. Is it hungry, thirsty, does it need a diaper change?! 😂😜 I honestly cant seem to grow orchids in orchid mix/bark/moss. I am a total under waterer and they still get rot. So I decided to switch to water culter n see how it works out. Basically everything you're doing is what I've already been doing. So, I'll keep at it n hopefully we see some new roots 🥰 The only thing I do in addition, is spray the roots and stem with hydrogen peroxide (after trimming) before I let it sit for that 24 hour dry period. I wanted to try it in leca, but after making the move from the bay area CA to zone 7a (massive change) most of my plants dont seem to be happy in leca. So, I spared myself the headache haha. I also tell myself to stop buying orchids from grocery stores. Then I go to buy eggs and I see all the blooms 😭😂

I'm really glad you showed the second mini! I have one with the exact same bloom from the grocery store and recently her roots experienced a burst of white mold so I tried to dry out the mold to kill it, didn't fully work and I had to water her so she wouldn't die. So to remedy the situation before she completely kicked the bucket I unpotted her from the foam-like medium she was in and cut off the far gone roots. I don't have any medium to put her in like moss or leca balls so I opted for water culture and her remaining system seems to be healthy, while there are 2 very long roots currently shaped like little J hooks and the rest are much shorter so you explaining what to do in that case is very useful for me! I'm on day two though so I shouldn't count my chickens before they hatch, crossing my fingers!

Patricia Thibeault sounds like you found something to make your plants happy! I try to not focus on what other people do and instead watch my plants for clues as to whether what I’m doing is working. If I notice a problem then I look around for what others have tried and do research to see if it would be helpful in my situation. But as long as my plants are growing and happy I don’t really worry about what others are doing. I still watch other channels because I think the interchange of ideas is great but everyone’s environment is different so I don’t think hard rules work across the board.

Hi! Just watched your 1 week update on water culture orchids. Very helpful! I transfered my orchid 2 weeks ago and her roots look good, but her leaves are droopy and leathery. I have her in a SE-facing window and I wonder if it's too much sun. I've been putting an inch of water in vase, letting it evaporate and then leaving dry for a few days. Any suggestions for leaves? Is she still in shock? Thank you for any advice you have! Oh, she is putting out a new leaf, so that's positive😂

Paula from Mexico. Where is week two??? That was August 9, now is September 6, 2020. I enjoyed this. I am working on 5 problem children. Learning. I am proud to say they all have new roots growing. My problem children are worse then yours, because they have a really long stems, so the water level was hard to gage. I have very little water in bottom, but I give them a drink with some mild fertilizer water, once a week.

silly question, but why not use a piece of microfiber around those short roots on the mini Phal and have one end of the microfiber in the reservoir to wick up moisture to them? Then you're not having to add and drain water all the time.

Michael McCarthy a very good suggestion and actually something I have done in the past and am currently doing with a Vandaceous type which I will be sharing in tomorrow’s video. If the new roots on the mini Phal don’t grow quickly enough it may become an option for this plant as well!

I’ve been researching and read that adding a little magnesium and calcium to the water encourages root production. Have you heard of this before? Also, the gel from aloevera plants applied to crown rot apparently sometimes saves the orchid and encourages new growth/spikes. The same with rubbing it on canes; encourages kikis...It would be an interesting experiment wouldn’t it? 🙂

Hi I was wondering why would my phal's 3 day old roots get dry when I try to leave it to dry for the 2 day mark. Should I believe she really likes to be wet all the time 1/2 in. of distilled water and right now she is not concentrating on her roots. She is taking out a new leaf and a spike. Should I cut the spike I am planning to cut it off. Don't know if she will keep growing her roots. She is a two months old rescued local grocery store phal big leaves with no flowers no roots.

Ninja_Orchids I agree!!! The Secret Smile that I got with her is also supposed to be a big lip Phal so I am eagerly watching that spike develop. I am surprised you have a problem growing some of your Phals in leca. I would think they would enjoy it! I wonder what they are objecting to. As you know some Phals get so comfortable growing in what they came in they object quite strongly to any change. They can usually be coerced though. 😉
@smallshebear
@smallshebear 4 жыл бұрын
Hey! Just to put my observations in: in semi-hydro with leca some of mine (most, realy 😂) object to have the stem even slightly covered/damp by the media. The roots also object to even a slightly dry top layer (in my environment) - adding a top-layer of non-vicking pebbles (as per Annabel) helped keeping the top more moist and allowed the roots to continue growing. I've transferred or are transferring most of my phals to water culture - and wow they behave differently!

@daniellesorchidranch1591
@daniellesorchidranch1591 4 жыл бұрын
I give some advise on mold in my dendrobium video. If you are experiencing mold on Phalaenopsis it is usually because the stem needs to be cleaned of debris like left over root velamen or leftover bits of old leaves. Or the water levels are to high and the base of the plant is staying to wet.

The part that covers the roots are very sturdy and have the black parts of whatever soil was used. So as I say they're very strong. So should I keep cleaning these pieces off all at once or Wait hours or daily? 6/2/23
@kmsbanr
@kmsbanr Жыл бұрын
You can soak a bit then try cleaning to see if more can be rinsed off or removed easily with tweezers. It wint hurt if it takes a while. Just keep an eye on it. After cleaning up you should spray with 3% Hydrogen Peroxide to help prevent disease. Cinnamon can be put on areas that were cut to seal the edge and help prevent disease too.

Hi Danielle, what about winter time? Are the orchids in water all the time too, or maybe you put even less water? Do you treat them the same as in the hot months? Also I have one silly question on miltoniopssi and nothing to do with water colture, so I hope I can ask you anyway. I have one miltoniopsis with two pseudobulbs one is smaller with only 3 leaves one central and 2 on each side , the other one has many more leaves where I had spikes and blooms a month ago and one new spike it's growing now. How do I know. which pseudobulb is the oldest so to understand if I potted it correctly? Thank you so much and have a nice day 💖
@daniellesorchidranch1591
@daniellesorchidranch1591 4 жыл бұрын
Anna Nicky I grow in water culture all year round. The only difference in winter is I give less fertilizer and since the plant growth slows down they get less water. Usually the oldest pseudobulb is the smallest one unless it’s a division off of a larger plant. Also the new growths have a tendency to come up behind the older part of the plant so where the newest growths are (the one that recently bloomed or are in spike) is the back of the plant and the oldest part will be in the front of the plant. Hope that helps.

Patricia Thibeault I always use fertilized water. With the exception of when I do a monthly flush. There are some people who say you shouldn’t fertilize newly transferred orchids but I am not sure what their reasons are. I always fertilize and have never had a problem. However I don’t fertilize at really high levels so perhaps that is why I don’t have a problem.

Algae in my experience is not a problem as long as it doesn’t take over completely and cover all the roots to the point it suffocates them and as long as the orchid doesn’t object. Most of my Phals don’t mind it so I just rinse the glass once a week and try to get most of it out. However my Vanda and species Phals do not like it so I try to remove as much of it was I can from the roots with a toothbrush when I change the water every week.

Danielle what causes black tips on roots?
@daniellesorchidranch1591
@daniellesorchidranch1591 4 жыл бұрын
Patricia Thibeault it could be a number of things. Build up of fertilizer on the roots can cause root burn. If a plant has a set back of loses its vigor because of a nutrient deficiency roots can die back. Some pests like to nibble root tips. There are many possibilities. It’s a matter of observation and eliminating what you know it can’t be and seeing if you can try something to improve it.
