I know everyone has their own way of growing Phalaeonpsis, their own preferred medium, pot etc etc...so this is how I grow them!
Mine are all rescue no ID Phals available from the discount tray at a supermarket or hardware store near you! And as they're relatively inexpensive that way you can afford to experiment!

Having lived in SE Asia for 16 of the last 19 years, these orchids were always a staple in my home and once they had finished blooming I would strap them to a coconut tree or fence in my backyard and they would rebloom several times a year. Clearly this will not be the case now that I am back living in Melbourne! Thank you for all your videos. They surely will help me to “reblooming” success! 😊

 @Hello Plant Lovers! FWIW, I've committed to leaving green spikes alone. This has resulted in nearly 18 months of non stop flowering with no signs of stopping. This particular Phal developed 2 new flowering spike midway up a 900mm flower spike, whilst a second spike again midway developed further 2 flowering spikes, lastly it grew a seperate spike which is also in flower and has mothered 2 additional plants from the base. It's simply been amazing and continues to astound me. Love your work BTW, very refreshing to see a local point of view.

OOOh wow! thanks for watching and I can't wait to see how my no-chop Phal goes - it's looking like it wants to go for it! And I often think...what would it do in the wild! Even though it's hybrid!....no chopping there! The spike would either die and drop or...not and keep on flowering!

I have lots of Phalaenopsis orchids! I’ve gotten most of mine for free. I work in a clock shop next door to a florist and get all the traumatized phals that need some recovery time in my grow room. They really started doing well when I upped their light levels. I don’t have any good windows, so I grow exclusively under led lights.

Hi Matthew, do you have a recipe for mealy bugs on phals. I live in WesternAustralia, so I enjoy watching your Vlogs as we would have similar temperature and products for caring for them. When i last sent you a comment i mentioned that i had a phal that hadn't flowered. Hurray, there has been some growth. Thank you for your helpful informations.

Congratulations! I just either rub them off if there's not too many, or use an old tooth brush with some rubbing alcohol. Or if it's really bad an insecticide spray. Many people will have their own recipe but I don't have the time to be honest!

Phallies in Melbourne so easy, correct light, don’t over water, correct potting mix combo spag. Perlite & vermiculite or small orchid mix, follow professional growers advice & adapt to your own area. I’m not suggesting any advice on this video is wrong simply adding mine as a Melbourne orchid amateur orchid lover.

If you leave the flower spike on after the flowers have gone .It can grow another spike off the side of it and will produce more flowers for you 💐

Been looking everywhere for sphagnum moss to use at potting medium for my phalaenopsis orchids but apparently Norway had some law-regulations that just changed.. resulting in plant shops not selling sphagnum moss anymore so im currently awaiting my order of sphagnum moss across seas! I cant wait for it to arrive! I've heard so many positive opinions on it and im just sold

Hi I received my first Phalanopsis hybrid as a gift from my cousin and I would like to know is it OK if I buy the potting mix with barks if I can't get the sphagnum moss and I will also get fertiliser for orchids. What else will my Phalanopsis Hybrid orchid will need as the years goes buy, except the watering and the trimming of the black roots and the cutting of the stem of the orchid just a bit higher than the spike. It's my very first orchid and I don't want to kill it. Any good advice on caring of the Phalanopsis Hybrid orchid I will be absolutely pleased to receive advice and instructions.

@@christinapapachristoforou1925 It doesnt really matter what medium you use in the pot as long as you're able to let it try inbetween waterings, maintain it somewhat airy and not suffocating the roots. Not keeping the pot wet for too many days in a row etc :) If you use bark only you may need to just water a bit more frequently than with moss, but moss can be very water retentive too so you have to be careful with it. Personally i dont mind bark at all for my phalaenopsis! it works great

Really just by giving the plan the correct care - and adding Mycorrhizal fungi to the mix - you can find that online.

I now have 23 rescue phals. Most are out or coming out in flower or bud now in September. I have one that has 9 leaves and has not spiked since the original spike of which I am disappointed in, but will try anything to get a spike. Also do you know if ordinary bark is OK as the course orchid mix has too much soil in it. I live in Western Australia and enjoy your vlogs. Hoping you can help, please.

Good luck with all the rescues! Yes, ordinary bark is fine, all depends on how you water and your relative conditions though.

Have you managed to rescue any phalenopsis orchids with very few roots using this method?
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers 2 жыл бұрын
You can revive them in sphagnum moss and warm humid conditions. But to be honest, as it is so easy to find hybrid Phalaeonpsis here, I've given up rescuing them! But good luck with yours, it can be done, just takes time.

Hi Matthew, which month of Autumn do you think is good to put the Phals out for the temp drop ?
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers Жыл бұрын
Hi there, depends entirely where you are! They wouldn't want to go much below 10oC or 50F and maybe a week is all you'd need. Good luck!

@@flameangel202 So it would depend when you get a drop in night time temps that aren’t too cold - could be any time.

Hi Matthew, thank you so much for your information :) very helpful!! I am in Melbourne too, but my phalaenopsis didn't bloom as i always keep them inside, and i think we turn on heater sometimes so that they may not "feel" the temperature drop... now we are in spring (kind of colder than usual) do u think i could bring them out at night for a month and help them to create flower spikes? Or do u have any suggestions for me? Many thanks!
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there - they can be temperamental! If anything its Autumn you could be putting them outside (undercover & protected from rain) for a chill before the cold winter night time temps set in; you could try this now though - might not be too late. But a trick I used in New York with very heated interiors was to put them on a north facing windowsill (northern hemisphere - south facing in Australia) close to the glass so they got a reel chill through the glass but were still warm enough to survive. Always worked for me! So perhaps try that? I have some just coming into spike so you might still have time - give either of the above a go! Outside for a few weeks or on a windowsill. Good luck!
