Only Part 107 pilots can fly higher than 400' if above, or next to, a structure. Per the FAA (and yes, I've asked them), recreational pilots are restricted to no more than 400' period, even if next to or above a structure.

@@DroneManMurphy Yes, I used the question form on their UAV Support Center. The FAA reply (short version): "There is a provision within Part 107 that allows certified remote pilots to operate 400 ft above structures." "This provision does not apply to recreational flyers. It is so funny seeing all the Phantom video’s popping up again. I started on the Phantom 4 Pro and moved to the Mavic 2 Pro. IMO, both rock solid and can’t go wrong with either. I kept thinking to myself, I wonder if the V2 is more pickier on the Obstacle Avoidance???? I wonder if you got a bad one??? I wonder if the IMU was calibrated??? I wonder if he calibrated in DJI Assistant 2 - and then you hit the nail on the head!!! I personally prefer the P4P controller linked with an iPad. Great review and comparison, Russ! Thanks!!

Put my Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 in the air for the first time today winds were 12 MPH gusting to 19. Shot some junk video just to see how the camera worked. Even when I flew fast the video looks like I’m only flying a couple MPH, the detail from the 20M Pixel camera is astounding branches and leaves waving in the wind. I was very impressed with the smoothness of the drone thanks to you Russ and your setting recommendations from past tutorials. However I didn’t make the mistake of not calibrating all the SENSORS. I learned about this error from this Tutorial before I flew the bird. The Phantom is a flying camera boom so stable, it’s amazing.

Nice video comparison, Russ. The original Mavic Pro required the same method for point of interest, if I remember correctly. I did a flag POI video at a neighborhood car wash a couple of months after buying the MP. I had to hover overhead with the camera pointed straight down, set the POI intelligent mode, then back away 40ft and down 15ft, before initiating the circle movement. With the M2P that I bought last summer, you just mark it on the screen and begin at whatever altitude or speed desired. I just did a windmill and the orbit wasn't exactly centered on the windmill like it would've been had I used my MP instead. I recently bought a DJI goggles from another local drone owner who needed cash. Now I'm trying to learn how to fly like Ken Heron does, but without the eyeball decals on the front. Lol

The tipping you saw in the first flight during the sharp turn was probably a gimbal breakaway. It can happen on the p4 when winds are high and the camera isn’t facing directly into the wind. If the side load on the gimbal becomes too great it releases the camera and resets and it looks like the drone has tilted 45 degrees momentarily. Kind of scary the first time you see it but no harm done.

I've only had my Phantom 4 Pro Plus V2 for 2 1/2months but it's a dream to fly. Yeah, it's noisy even with the "quiet" props. The display on the controller is great in sunlight (not that we have a lot of that in the Pacific Northwest). No problems with going into the sun and obstacle avoidance. Sport mode really kicks butt. And yes, the controller DOES get real hot with all the hot air blowing out.

Hey Russ! Another butter-smooth presentation. Love the way your present your videos. But on the subject: my main issue with the Phantom series is the age of the technology behind it. It is starting to remind me of the B-52 Stratofortress. Yeah, it's gonna do the job, it's mostly reliable, but it's a BIG, LOUD flying dinosaur! And, in the Phantom's case, with the leaps in technology that are going on today, I just don't see it as the professional's tool of choice in 2-3 more years.

Thanks for that Russ I've pretty well given up on extended comments on KZbin as no one usually reads them through but in interests of balance for anyone who's interested... "once more into the breach". I have both the P4P v2.0 and The M2Pro ... and the M2Zoom, and Sparks and Inspire and ... I'm sure you get the idea. I have 6 different DJI platforms which with double ups make 10 DJI drones in the inventory so I don't have any reason to play favourites. Each has it's strengths and weaknesses and a purpose in which it shines. First comment, that little dive by the gimbal to the right when turning that you are experiencing, that's not normal in my experience. I have two P4Pv2.0s currently and owned a third one and have flown other peoples none of them have ever exhibited that behaviour. Second comment, the sensitivity to sunlight triggering false positives on the sensors is something I find varies from individual drone to drone rather than model to model. Of mine my M2Zoom is the most prone and drives me wild, my P4P's do not suffer from it greatly thankfully. Need to calibrate is again something that varies amongst my drones individually. I'm of the "do it when required" school of thought. I have a P4P V2.0 that has never once been calibrated in any way in 14 months of use, not sensors, not IMU not even compass. It blows me away, I have promised myself not to do it until absolutely needed just to see how long it goes. I have other drones that require it every time they go out. My M2Pro needs the compass done if I fly more than about 30km from the last spot I flew but is otherwise rock solid. For anyone interested in still photography I'd suggest the M2Pro, the palate and saturation on the camera is gorgeous with little post needed. For inspections it's the M2Zoom as the 96mm zoom when running at 1080p allows you to get right in for a close look and for videography, mapping and 3d modelling the camera on the P4P is without equal. Range, duration, handling and wind resistance vary a little one way or the other but basically cancel out any preference in the long run. Portability can be a factor for some but I think it's blown out of proportion by most reviews, as a commercial operator my drones are all in hard cases anyway so there's less between them in my case than there may be for others. If you are serious about commercial work a P4P v2.0+ with the integrating screen such as you were using is less than ideal as, although improved, support for 3rd party applications of the type that commercial operators like to use is still and probably always will be somewhat lacking. If you are only going to use the Go 4 app then maybe it's worth the extra ... maybe. I'll close by saying that if you held a gun to my head and said that I could only keep one drone, it'd be a Phantom 4 Pro V2.0. At a pinch I can do everything my other drones can do with the Phantom where as the reverse is not true solely because of the camera. At this point 60fps and mechanical shutter = Phantom. Thanks for all the great videos, keep them coming. Ari

Great information to know, I'm still on the fence regarding the Phantom 4 v2, I have the original P4, and have 2 Crystal Sky (Large and Small) monitors that I use with it, my P4 is rock solid when in the sky (haven't ever experienced OA issues however), I also have the M2P, Mavic Air and Mavic Mini, the issue I have with the P4 v2.0 is that for some reason, DJI has made it unusable with the Smart Controller, which was one of the reasons I was looking to purchase it, as I have the Smart Controller for the MP2, the other issue is according to the DJI Store, it take 20 - 25 days to ship (estimated), which translate to likely over a month, I'm waiting to see what the next firmware update will do, as well as waiting for their shipping estimates to go down
@RemotePilotsAustralia4 жыл бұрын
Jimmy Ware To me the only worthwhile difference between the original P4P and the V2.0 is occusync 2 over lightbridge and that’s a pretty worth while upgrade. From my perspective as a commercial operator the Crystal Sky and Smart Controller suffer the same problem as the integrated display in the P4P + which is lack of support for 3rd party applications which I regularly use. The fact that the all run a slightly modified version reference android 5 doesn’t give me a lot of confidence that it will ever be updated to a point I can use it with work. We’ve moved on 5 more android versions since then and the application development focus has shifted with the evolution. Unless DJI are going to do development “in house” the relevance of those devices for anything other than Go 4 is going to just get worse. I know that DJI has released beta firmware giving Smart Controller support with the P4P v2.0 and some reviewers have tested it, that was before the v2.0 became unavailable so there is every reason to expect that will go through now it is back in limited production which brings us to availability. While the P4P v2.0 is back in production and I expect it will stay in production until,we see something else in the prosumer range released with a mechanical shutter the numbers being made are reported to be significantly lower than before hence the time frame for shipping. My beautiful wife of 35 years bought me another one for my birthday a few weeks ago (sorry guys, no she doesn’t have a sister) and she bought it through our local dealer who told her only 50 had been imported at that stage. I’d suggest buying from a dealer as being the quickest route to obtaining one. Best of luck Jim, enjoy your flying. Regards Ari

I've had the P4P V2.0 for 4 years now and have never ever had the issues you described. I own the Mavic pro 2, Mavic mini 2, Mavic air and other than size P4P beats them all hands down, no question. Now the obstacle avoidance beep and on screen warnings can all be disabled if you choose, I personally never fly using obstacle avoidance, but that's me I'm an advanced pilot and comfortable with my skills. I personally find these New Mavic class drones too toy like, like driving an automatic vs a manual. Hey if that's how you want to fly, more power to you. The P4P V2.0 will remain the King of DJI drones well into the future.

Additionally, the controller for the P4 is awesome. I sure with I could use it on the Mavic. I can't stand the stock Mavic controller. It feels like a cheap toy compared to the Phantom series. I completely agree about the propellers in the shots. It can be a nuisance occasionally, but there are work-arounds that can help.

I have both also. Each has it's own merit. For travel...no competition Mavic 2 Pro All day! For filming anywhere my car goes P4P+v2.0 It easily connects via Hot spot on my Note 8 phone so connectivity is no issue. The P4P+v2.0 handles high winds better but only by a hair! The Panos are much easier to film and stick on the Mavic 2 Pro. Also I noticed that the P4P+v2.0 does not show any indication on the screen if you don't have a SD card installed so that IS an issue. A good preflight fixes almost everything though of course. I have never had that Obstacle Warning issue with the sun either. Full calibration is always the way to go! I also feel the Mavic 2 Pro does a better job filming at night. Hope that helps some visitors to decide as well. I am a commercial drone pilot for almost 6yrs and have the awesome FAA daylight waiver as well.

Replaced those and was disappointed with the range. I bought an Alientech booster and it flew for miles. The p4p/p4a is really powerful and you need to go really precise with the controller. After that I got the MP1 and now the MA2. I still love the robustness and the power of the P4P/P4A ver 1.0/2.0 to this day. Never had a problem with the obstacle avoidance.

@@Xterraforce Hello between these 2 drones the p-4-p has a mechanical shutter. There are alot of apps and software for stitching together photo's . But with the p-4-p and the Inspire that mechanical shutter along with the high resolution p4p has 4k 60 you can eliminate the motion blur and still have photo's that won't be I would describe as mushy. Giving you the ability to make a more detailed map. Billy Kyle and Drone U have several videos on drone mapping if this interest you. Mechanical shutter is the key point. You could use a drone with and electronic shutter and fly slower to get around but it would take alot more time.

Ah, I understand now. Thanks for explaining it.

@@Xterraforce the phantom 4 pro or the phantom 4 pro advanced would be good you don't have to get the phantom 4 pro V-2 they both have same camera

5:24 ... if you ask me it was not the drone that tilted, but the gimbal ... the prop is not longer visible for a few seconds ....

If you watch the entire video, you will see that I put that up on the screen.

Another great video, I appreciate the detailed information you present. I live on the west coast, frequently flying in windy conditions. For me, trying to continually work around prop ghosting was not worth the effort. The main reason I got rid of my phantom though, I had connectivity issues frequently enough that I did not feel confident flying in situations where it could cause an issue. I have never had any connectivity issues with my MP2.

Russ, The first drone I purchased after a couple of funky play ones was a Xiaomi mi followed by a Phantom 4. When I got my Mavic 2 Pro I thought I'd mastered drone piloting until I went back to the other previous drones just to get time on them. Huge difference between flying a fixed drone vs a fold-up. I think it's the weight of the Phantom that has a lot to do with it as its response is slower. I have several hundred videos showing the props of my Phantom and learned that gimbel control is a must to avoid it. Personally I think the major difference is the cameras an the Mavic style drones are much more enjoyable to pilot so, I am intending to explore the Autel Evo 2. This gives you have a huge selection of camera systems that are interchangeable on the same drone.

That POI issue is if you wanted to shoot those deer, when you get directly overhead to mark, those props are really loud directly below and would chase your subject away.

This is the bird that I reach for if I'm doing anything professional but otherwise, I fly my M2P.

Hi Russ, Many thanks for the great content !! I'd like to ask you a straightforward question. For photography, Maviv 2 Pro or the Phantom ? Keep up the great work Thanks

I have a fair amount of time on theP2P, never had the issues with the obstacle avoidance like you had. Are the sensors and covers clean? I clean mine just like the lens... I could see if there’s fingerprints or gunk on those sensors and the sun hits just right, it may trigger the avoidance.

Great video :-) I started flying a home built quad with a dji flightcomputer, then a hexa.. One day i got in hold of a phantom 2 vision, that dropped to the ground for me the first day in afrika... then i have had Phantom 3 advanced, then mavic.. and now a mavic 2 pro.. I agree with you that the mavics are more stable to fly in the wind, and much more easy to bring along.. But i love my M2P :-)
