Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.
The musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Now in its 35th record-breaking year, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, after more than 11,000 performances.

Strawberry Bunny Well the film adaptation didn't really stick fully to the original story, it had a fresher take on it which in my opinion really geared towards the next generation of theater fans. A broodingly mysterious and cruel character thats also more youthful than the past phantoms is what drew me closer to this version. I guess what I'm trying to say is that this Phantom was able to become more relatable to me. This movie is why I appreciate classics like The Phantom. I'm in love
@blackngoldcuttlefish3390
@blackngoldcuttlefish3390 8 жыл бұрын
+Strawberry Bunny knows what's up. "and the thing was that it was like a heavenly voice coming from a corpse-like person." :D and if the story has been "updated" to a brooding, traumatized overly-insecure younger guy who doesn't actually even look that bad and is unaware of how amazingly hot he really is...that's great but it's just not Phantom of the Opera.
@SongRainbows
@SongRainbows 8 жыл бұрын
+Strawberry Bunny that was just in the book I think. The Broadway version is more like the book but still not the same. The people that made the movie said they modified it to be more relatable to younger viewers and that's also why his face isn't as deformed because they thought it would make too much of a disconnect with the audience

I couldn't really hear his voice through my laughter. All we know for sure is that Emily Rossum certainly required a regimen of Zovirax after "savoring each sensation" of Butler's herptastic kisses.

Gerard Butler gives such a heartfelt, vulnerable perfomance for this song. This Phantom is seductive, but he also tugs at your heartstrings. You can feel the loneliness and longing in his voice. He is seductive, not in a bold manner, but in a whispery kind of way. Especially when he sings ''Only then can you belong to me...''. You can just feel how he is barely keeping himself from melting into tears of love for Christine.

@@Iceicebaby0117 if hearing the hurt and anger from the phantom is important for you, I highly recommend the 25th anniversary recording, particularly the "All I Ask of You" reprise and the end. For some reason, the OBC recording falls super flat when it comes to voice acting, like they're delivering lines but not actually acting out the emotions. The more recent recording does much better in this department imo.

WhenYouveGoneGuru Well. ALW Phantoms need to be fit. Handsome is a bonus 😁. Especially London Phantoms who have to catch and to carry the swaying Christines every night. Skinny Phantoms would give problems to the productions. Imagine the accidents from carrying Christine or Red Death trap door if The Phantoms are not fit. But most of the male musical performers are good looking anyway. Started from Michael Crawford to Ben Forster. Can you find the ugly one among them? I don't think so. The half mask of The Phantom only emphasises their perfect bones structures.

Though quiet yet almost silent, Butler managed to hold that last note for a good 23 seconds which is impressive! Traditional, when the Phantom says the line "turn your face away" he's turning Christine's face away from him, but in the movie, he turns her face to him - implying that it is the world that is ugly, not him. I really liked this change.

The very first word that comes to my mind about this song is "hypnotic," if not by the Phantom's voice then definitely by the lyrics. "Silently the senses abandon their defenses." Just thinking of the meaning behind those words alone... It sounds so intimate, so vulnerable that my breath catches every time I hear it.

For years there was this old-timey music box at my grandparents' house. They had this huge house and in the main ballroom behind the piano the music box sat on top of a tiny antique table. It was made of this dark marble of some kind. I was always so fascinated by it as a child. Whenever I was alone and all the other cousins went off to play I'd go behind the piano and wind up the gear at the bottom of the music box. It would play this song but at the time I had no idea what song it was. It was just a melody that I loved as a child. Years later, I was probably 14 or 15, my sisters and cousins put on the DVD for this movie in the media room that my cousins had at their house. At first I was thinking, "What, a musical movie? Not my thing but I guess I'll just stick around." I kinda just sat around, watching this movie with my cousins and sisters, barely paying attention. Then this scene came in. When Gerard started to sing the melody at the start, I jumped up from the couch in total shock. For years I had no clue what that melody was. My cousins tried asking me what was wrong and I couldn't say. Memories of my childhood flooded my brain. Sneaking off to be alone with that music box in the ballroom just to hear that melody. Totally entrancing. Now whenever I hear this song, it takes me back to a simpler time. What a beautiful melody.

My story is sort of like yours, but a bit different. When I was at least four or five, my father absolutely loved this movie and showed me this scene various times. My father stopped showing me these movie scenes when my mother complained to my father I "Shouldn't be watching PG-13 Movie scenes when she's four (or five.)" . I discovered this movie when I was at my Opera practices and one of my friends told me of this movie, I thought it sounded similar. When I searched it up on "KZbin'', I clicked this video and found the song, which took me down Childhood Lane. I'm happy I finally found this song, but a bit angry that my father hasn't showed me another one of these scenes earlier.

Major disagreement. I admit Gerard is an awesome piece of eye candy, but that misses the point. His most handsome element is supposed to be his voice, and a big part of the whole story is that the Phantom is not handsome and is shunned by society. I see very little emotion that is appropriate for scenes. Whenever he does have strong emotions he goes way over the top. That said the man himself is not a bad actor. However, in this, he was horribly miscast as were most of the people in this film. In fact, (and I know I may get some hate from this but) in my opinion this is a terrible film. So no go on the voice. As Nostalgia critic said his voice sounds like "sandpaper on a firing machine gun".

Gerard is my favorite Phantom. I find his voice very hypnotic, especially here. Christine is obviously in a trance, and that’s how I feel every time I hear this song. No musical training, just natural talent. Plus he sings from the heart. He is absolutely amazing.

okay but you can't deny the fact that he kind of gives the vibe of an self-trained man. yes, in the book erik's voice made everyone weep to its beauty but he didn't take any lessons from anyone, his was just a god-given gift. gerik's voice sounds just like that.

Considering how long the phantom was in hiding for with people always around and being forced to live with loneliness and in silence, one can't expect him to have the perfection that professional singers have with their hours of practice. The imperfection that Butler shows in this version works well and makes a lot of sense while feeling more realistic to how the phantom was living his life prior to meeting someone. Also, depending on how deformed the face is in some areas, that can be a factor with limited mobility as well (not that it affected him). For those reasons alone, I really enjoy this version a lot more.

1:48-2:00 Right there he just jumped the octave on the words "to soar". He went from low A-flat to high A-flat. He does it again on the words "to be" at the end of the next verse and in "Down Once More" ("as HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELL!") That octave jump is my favorite part of "Music of the Night."

Nighttime sharpens, heightens each sensation Darkness stirs and wakes imagination Silently the senses abandon their defences Slowly, gently, night unfurls its splendour Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender Turn your face away from the garish light of day Turn your thoughts away from cold, unfeeling light And listen to the music of the night Close your eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams Purge your thoughts of the life you knew before Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar And you’ll live as you’ve never lived before Softly, deftly, music shall caress you Hear it, feel it, secretly possess you Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind In this darkness that you know you cannot fight The darkness of the music of the night Let your mind start a journey to a strange, new world Leave all thoughts of the life you knew before Let your soul take you where you long to be Only then can you belong to me Floating, falling, sweet intoxication Touch me, trust me, savour each sensation Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in To the power of the music that I write The power of the music of the night You alone can make my song take flight Help me make the music of the night

At the start of the movie, I was a bit put off by the Phantom's rather insecure singing, which was contrasted by Christine's very solid voice. This feeling quickly went away, and I have come to really appreciate Butler's performance. The timbre fits the character very well, giving a sublime air of mystery. The singing is by no means perfect, but it conveys a lot of emotion making for some memorable renditions, such as this one. I don't mind imperfection in singing, this is, after all, a movie and not a musical theater play. In fact, imperfection makes the experience a bit more relatable.

my favorite phantoms by far are Gerald and Ramin, both of which have never had formal music training, which i feel is very accurate to the character. the Phantom never took a music lesson, he acquired his talent through listening to the singers in the opera house... ramin and gerald both have that rawness to their voices💜💜

I love this song because of how Eric gets almost excited or happy at points while singing, if you watched the deleted scene "no one would listen" You understand why he loves her and does all this stuff for her, they have know each other for a long time and he has finally revealed his self to her. To me it seems kinda realistic of how he acts, but don't mind me, just geeking out here and wished Christine choose Eric over Raoul.
