This scene is so sad, it really shows that most of his hold over has to do with lust, the second he tried to be gentle, sincere and loving she looks like she broke out of a trance. I really do think though if Raoul didn't exist she would have fallen for Phantom.

+McKenna West They both loved each other. She loved the Phantom on level way above Raoul but Raoul offered her safety which is why in the end the Phantom let her go because he knew he couldn't protect her. That's why the ending is just so sad because they have to depart.

+McKenna West The Phantom loves Christine and is trying to "woo her" with this song. It is clear that she loves him too, but is frightened by his murderous actions. He'll do anything to win her affections and is jealous of her relationship with Raoul. The part where you said she "breaks out of her trance", is Christine realising that the Phantom has overheard her and Raoul on the rooftop, because he is using the same song that they sang to each other (All I Ask of You).

1:27 - 1:31 in this part imo, Raoul realizes how connected Erik and Christine to each other. That no matter what he’ll do, there’s always a part of Christine that only Erik can complete it. He may be the “safe” choice since Erik’s a repulsive and obssessed man, but she will always belong to him and him to her. That’s why he’s like tearing up. I mean why would you even tear up seeing your girl like that? Jealousy? Nah! Dude realizing the deep connection😂

By far my favorite scene of the movie. The Point of No Return is surely about Erik's frustrated fantasies (there's nothing wrong about it, it's totally ok lol), but the part when he sings "All I Ask of You"... is so, but so beautiful and lovable. He's surrendered, weak and fragile, showing his deepest feelings and dreams for Christine. It's easy to notice how much real his love was, it's not a petty childish "feeling" that Raoul sang. Erik's "All I Ask Of You" is truly romantic and lovable. The song was about sex and everything, but Erik's confession was the purest form of love and courage. He has weakness as any other human has, but still, Erik was very strong facing his traumas and his love deception. And of course Christine helped him to be stronger and a better person, despiting the bad things he did (with good intentions). I. LOVE. THIS. STORY. The musical is not that loyal to the novel (unsurprassing) but still got the moves.

Right before she took his mask off, you can see she's very conflicted. She needs to reveal his face so the police and others know its him, but she is also clearly in love with in almost in spite of herself and doesn't want to hurt him or see him get hurt. You can even see the guilt on her face and in her eyes after she takes it off and for a split second, even the phantom's expression says, "Fair enough," after the initial shock and before the rage kicks in. The acting here is beyond amazing.

Thank you for this comment. I feel embarrassed to admit I didn’t understand why Christine unmasked him during this scene, because I felt it was so obvious that people knew that the actor was the Phantom. +zomberz von zombycow Well, remember throughout the play, the two theater owners are always fretting about their public image. So, shooting a performer in the middle of a show would've brought bad publicity. That's why they waited and "made certain the doors are bared, made certain their men are there, made certain they're armed". Their original plan was to wait "until the curtain falls; his reign will end". They just weren't anticipating the Phantom taking an alternative exit. xD

It still amazes me how many people don't realise that The Phantom/ Erik wears a wig. If you watch the scene prior to PONR where he sings; "seal my fate tonight, i hate to have to cut the fun short..." you can see him adjust his wig and also all his spare wigs are on the table. The Phantom also wears a wig in the stage version....the main difference is that stage Phantom has very little hair....whereas Gerry's Phantom has more hair (though thinner on the disfigured side) and is blonde. I have always loved the movie's version of PONR. It's the only scene i think the movie does better than the stage version, mostly because i like that Christine knows it's him as soon as he starts singing, rather than him hiding under the black hood and cape. I also completely love Gerry's performance, especially here (Emmy's also)....he completely owns the role. There are some wonderful Phantoms, and he deserves his place among them. 🌹🖤

Emma Petersen I disagree. First of all, I don’t think he intended to surprise her. He wrote this opera so that he could perform this scene with her, I doubt he’d want her to _not know it was him._ Also, he looks up at Raoul, too, somewhere before the beginning of this clip. He knows they’re there to kill him. And, honestly, I don’t think he really cares. He’s smiling and happy because it’s a show, and he has to be, but he drops that when he and Christine get close enough. You’re right that he’s desperate when he sings All I Ask of You, but wouldn’t that be because he knows it’s impossible? People aren’t generally desperate for something they know they have, they’re desperate for something they know they _don’t_ have. He’s desperate because he knows he’s lost her, and he’s begging her not to leave. He might not have known specifically that she was going to take his mask off, but he knew something was up (especially since they yell-sang about it in his opera house).

And at 2:27 that little moment they have together where she smiles as he serenades her is so raw and beautiful it perfectly shows their love ♡. If Raoul weren’t in the picture I believe Christine would’ve chosen the phantom in a heartbeat.
@trin14643 жыл бұрын
they would've !! the director and ALW even said so themselves. they made it a romance and love triangle on purpose and they wanted to make her decision to the viewers as confusing as people so you truly don't know who she will choose in the end. Unfortunately, because he's so scared of losing her since shes the only person whos ever loved him and seen the kindness in him despite his face, he goes to disgusting measures to keep her with him and make Raoul lose their competition of winning her love, and because of that, there's no way she can stay with him :( his murderous tendencies scare her no matter how much she loves him and cares for him.

I love this song so much... it makes me cry. There's all this sexy stuff that was in the opera and written that way, but through the whole section, you can kind of see in the Phantom's eyes that he's not positive that she means what she's singing. Then everything stops and he breaks off; it's as if he didn't mean to propose to her there, but he couldn't help himself. And Christine hears the change and snaps out of the trance she's in... 2:20 you can hear the raw emotion in his voice, the years of tortured loneliness, the pleading for someone to understand him and love him and value him despite his face... Look, his hands are shaking as he holds hers... Sing it to me, Phantom. My answer would have been different.

The Phantom has been hypnotizing her with his singing through the whole movie and at this scene she’s hypnotizing him. Also, if Madam Giry has seen his face before why did she freak out? I liked that with this movie he’s not wearing a hooded cloak unlike the opera. Both are timeless though. You can never get tired of them if your a true Phantom of the Opera fan.

I am pretty sure ALW had the sequel in mind when making this, which could explain why she acts differently to the Broadway version. No fear, can clearly see it is Erik; she doesn't fight back at all and even looks to be removing his mask gently.

To me it looks like a really bad sunburn but that’s about it, idk why people would scream in horror of that....he looks fine to me...

His mind and voice is supposed to be hypnotic (like an angel), but his appearance is meant to be repulsive, hence their horrified screams.

@@EntertainmentFan11 Plus this takes place in the late 1800's, and upperclass people never really saw anyone with disabilities or disfigurements except in the circus, so it was probably a shock for them.

IKR! When she removed his mask I was like "WTF is this all?" Like I look uglier than he does with that "bad" scar. Wouldn't stop me from dating him even for a second.

can I just ask a question? why does everyone scream when Christine take s off the phantoms mask I mean it doesn't bother me at all I just think it is sad because no one really excerpts the phantoms face and that's what gets me down because I feel sorry as hell for the poor phantom
@amyli0927 жыл бұрын
I'd say it's for mixed reasons. Some people might have screamed in shock because Christine took the mask off, but others might have reacted that way because of Erik's face. You can't really help how you react to certain things.

they also weren’t completely sure that he was real, even the masquerade could’ve been a fake, so seeing him in person would be pretty scary (especially with all the crime he’s committed)

His face. Even the next song explains it. "Why, you ask, was I bound and chained in this cold and dismal place?! Not for any mortal sin, but the wickedness of my abhorrent face! Hounded out by everyone, met with hatred everywhere, no kind words from anyone, no compassion anywhere!"

i personally like it when they scream (ben!!!) because it adds up with stydi. if he screams his head off in front of one person he’s not gonna stay silent in front of a sold out audience
