Can we talk about how intense and goosebump inducing it was to see the phantom keep looking back at Christine, as he pulls her through the mirror and leads her down to his lair? It’s like he’s checking to see that she’s still following him, before turning to look our direction with the most satisfied and proud, “she is mine” looking smile/smirk. Fun fact: the living hands holding the candelabras at 0:06 are an homage to Jean Cocteau’s 1946 film Beauty and the Beast. In the film, the hallways of the Beast’s castle are filled with these same living candelabras, moving to light the way for Belle. It’s a beautiful and haunting bit of production design. Obviously, the Phantom and the Beast share the same Parisian interior decorator.
@pillypuppy666 Жыл бұрын
And they both share struggles. Both of them have been rejected because of their appearance and they allowed it to seep into their soul. Both of them ended up seeming either wicked, or insane, when there is actually more underneath. The only difference is that on of them actually is a supernatural being (The Beast) and the other is merely confused for one (The Phantom).

In the _Phantom,_ Madame Giry tells Raoul that the Phantom is more than a musician; he sings, plays, composes, is an architect and master craftsman. I think I know why. Some of an artists best work is based upon reality. Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the songs specifically for Sarah Brightman, to fit her voice. They were married for a few years, and when you think about it, they were kind of like the Phantom and Christine in a very loose and general sense, I don’t mean Lloyd Webber was a madman living beneath an opera house. A musical genius, in love with a singer, his inspiration, his own angel of music. I think there's an incredible amount of real passion behind the songs, perhaps this one in particular.

I know Gerard Butler always gets critisised for his role, but I don't think you can even think of him as playing the exact same role that Michael Crawford and Colm Wilkinson did in the original production. He is playing a different version of the role with a different tone that is a different take on the phantom. I think when looking at it that way, he does a good job.
@alexandrazisk70914 жыл бұрын
I agree. Every person who plays the phantom brings something new. There are better trained singers who've played the role, but I haven't seen so much of an emotional range from an actor playing the phantom then I have with Gerard Butler. People Ramin Karimloo is the best because he's a trained actor and singer, and while Ramin he's my second favorite phantom, Gerard will always be the one who's versions of various phantom songs, particularly music of the night, that I listen to..

Say what you want about Gerry's and Emmy's voices individually, but when they sing together, they're AH-MAZING. I can't get over how well they harmonize in this bridge! You can hear both of them clearly, Gerry's older, deeper baritone voice and Emmy's higher, younger soprano voice, but at the same time they manage to create such a beautiful balance between the two, and it sounds incredible! They do it in "Wandering Child" and "Point of No Return" as well, but this is definitely where their harmonization is the strongest.

I wish there were more close up scenes. The scenery is fantastic but a close up of the Phantom while he says "sing for me" it would have been orgasmic 😆😆

I love this movie I saw this movie when I was 18 in theaters and I fell in love with it. A remind me when I saw the phantom of the Opera play when I was a teenager. Emmy was a perfect for this as Christine and Gerard Butler he is so handsome in it and was young in this too. But they both did a good job.

People who criticise Butler or this version in general forget that the film is not just based on the musical, but the musical and film are based on a 19th century French novel. It's a literary adaptation with musical elements. You need character actors for that, not just prolific singers.

I really like the Phantom movie. I do think it's odd how some lyrics were changed and some verses of songs were left out, but overall it's a pretty faithful adaptation of the amazing musical.

Love Gerard Butler as the phantom best. Wonder why the filmmakers cut out the extra verse at the end. Must say, I like the original better because of that extra verse.

is no one going to talk about how good the beat is in the beginning?! recently my teacher has been showing my class the movie, (bc shes a nerd) and when I first heard the beat, I recognized it. And i remember thinking that the beat reminded me of some old fashioned scary mansion. And I have no idea where I heard it as a kid, because I had never watched Phantom of the Opera. But I just know I've heard it in my childhood from a scary movie or something. But I just can't get over the fact that the melody is sooooo good! I keep replaying it over and over again just bc it fits so perfectly with the scene and the place.
