Please go to 19:27 in the video for the explanation of how Botulism works and why honey is dangerous for infants under 1 year old.

Yay! Glad to see an update! A few things: 5:28: The orange peels aren't boiled but pickled in honey. Citrus peels in honey or syrup is a common east asian remedy for colds, you can buy a jar of honeyed citron from your local Korean supermarket and it tastes wonderful in tea if you like it hot, or soda water if you like something cold and bubbly. 9:15: Mao-Mao is sunning the books that had accumulated in the store room. Remember: Written materials were, at the time, very expensive. They were usually stored with security in mind which usually meant poor air circulation. This made them vulnerable to rot if the room was improperly maintained. The head maid is taking the opportunity to air out the books and sun them to remove the humidity and protect against mould. 16:37: The translation 'foster siblings' isn't quite accurate. The correct term is actually 'milk siblings', A-Duo's mother was the Emperor's wet-nurse, which is why A-Duo has been afforded such a long and privileged position despite being rendered barren after the disastrous birthing.

OHHH THANK YOU THIS MAKES SENSE. Ever since watching this episode I’ve been wanting what Gyokyou served because it looked so so good. I’ve tried three different boiled orange peel recipes and nothing is as gooey and delicious looking as this. Thank you for preventing me from further wasting my time! Lol

- Current emperor (then prince) and Ah Duo are "milk siblings" and NOT "foster siblings" (Ah Duo's mother is current emperor's wetnurse). They had a child when the current emperor was still a prince. When current emperor was a prince, Ah Duo is the only concubine he had. - Previous emperor and previous empress (current empress dowager, current emperor's mother who gave birth at young age), they had second child, the current emperor's younger brother. (First son the current emperor and second son) - Both babies were born around the same time. It means the current emperor's son and younger brother were born around the same time. - Luomen (Mao Mao's dad who worked in inner court), such a qualified doctor being expelled, something happened, later about him... - sometimes when you question things in this show, remember the questions but no need to dwell on them too much, you may get the answers in later episodes....they will reveal them slowly, while bringing more new questions 😅

Don't know if anyone included this in the comments or not. But you wondered about the reason they were airing out the books. Well, some of it is because of the kind of paper they used. It was very susceptible to moisture and thus molding. In this time period, it was very hard to store anything in a dry environment, especially after the wet seasons. Airing out the books were normally done on a regular basis from 2 to 4 times a year, depending on how wet or dry the year had been. Because of the way they stored books and documents, older more damaged documents would be considered for either disposal, repair or recopy. Depending on their contents.

Normally, the probability of death is extremely high if infant botulism were to occur in an ancient Chinese-style world where medicine was not yet developed, but since this is a fictional world, there may have been a special strain of botulism. It is also possible that Lishu performed a miracle and survived the near-death experience. In any case, she would have been told by those around him not to lick the honey. * In the novel, it is mentioned that there is a poison that is effective only for babies with weak resistance. The author also explained that giving honey to babies would cause infant botulism, but said that it is also a useful fungus for removing wrinkles. I am not a medical expert, so I have heard that botulinum spores are heat-resistant, and some types of botulinum spores cannot be sterilized even when heated at 100 degrees Celsius for 10 minutes. Therefore, I heard that even sweets with honey are not good for babies. Nowadays, we often hear about the dangers of honey, but there are still some people who do not know about it, and it is still a problem. When this animation was aired in Japan, I saw some people saying they had never heard of it.
@danaroth5989 ай бұрын
Most pediatricians advise against honey until at least age 1, some up to age 2 just to be on the safe side. The main danger is to very little babies (under 6 months). It takes a while for babies to build up the immune system response necessary to safely consume (normal, non-poisonous) honey. Pasteurized honey can still have C. botulinum, and cooked foods made with honey can also be dangerous. It's okay for breastfeeding mothers to have honey, though, it won't transfer through milk. ETA: A lot of infant botulism cases come about from people practicing traditional medicine, because honey is a traditional remedy in a lot of cultures and people don't realize the risk.

Nice coat. 10:13 Fengming was already marked as the main suspect by Jinshi in the previous episode, but Maomao has no idea about it. The keyword, or number, in this episode is 17. They mentioned it so many times. Don't let that slip.

I wonder if you could draw a connection between Lishu surviving infant botulism and her seeming to have a lot of serious allergies later in life? I don't think we actually know what causes allergies to develop in that sense, but I don't think it'd be a necessarily unreasonable hypothesis that a serious illness like that in infancy might have life-long effects on the sensitivity of her immune system?

What Maomao is doing with the books is airing them. In Asian countries, it is very humid, even in winter, and these books are handwritten. So if they get damp, the ink could smudge. Also, damp breeds mould. There is a Japanese saying that if you do not get out of bed in the morning, mushrooms will grow on your head. This refers to how quickly mould and fungoids can sprout. Airing the books is just as important as airing one's bedding or clothes.

I just wanted to also point out as to why Lishu (the youngest concubine) is here is because the previous Emperor was a lolicon. Many of the concubines that got pregnant by him were 14 and under. The current emperor is NOT a lolicon as he prefers his women to be of a mature age. This is why he does visit Lishu as of right now., he's waiting for her to mature.

I knew about the Botox thing but only as a standalone trivia. It's really nice to be able to connect the science to the factoid 👍 On the CSI China side of things: I shouldn't speak on conjectures but it seems there were two babies being born some years ago: one between the previous emperor and his official wife the empress consort Dowager, the other between then-teenage Emperor/Prince and then-teenage Ah Duo who wasn't.. anything? She was around presumably because her mom was the emperor/prince's wet nurse, so they got to know each other and screwed around and had a baby due to proximity most likely. This would imply that Jinshi is the son of the current Emperor with Ah Duo, because if Jinshi were the brother of the Emperor then there's nothing inappropriate about his position and thus no need to hide him away like he is. On the other hand, it makes sense for a child sired by a prince to be considered problematic.

@@DefinitivelyZach one thing to note: the Chinese traditionally count ages slightly differently. An infant is considered 1 year old when they are born, and they are considered one year older each new year's day. So there could be up to two year's difference between the "nominal age" and the "actual age". So when someone is referred to as "born xx years ago", or "xx years old", the numbers may not match. (Disclaimer: I haven't read the source material, so I don't know if the author leans into this).

The show is low key implying that Maomao might be the current emperor's sister. 17 years ago, two children were born. Jinshi is the son of Ah-Duo and then prince, now Emperor, who was switched for the "son" of the old emperor for unknown reasons. Ah Duo and Jinshi look very similar, down to the hair color. We don't know what happened to the son/child of the old emperor, Luomen was involved in the births and was expelled when Jinshi "died", and somehow ended up with a foster daughter who just so happens to also be 17 years old. We've had one look at the dowager empress (at the garden party) and she kinda does look a bit like Maomao when the latter is glammed up. I think this is a red herring though, mainly because the hair colors of Maomao and the dowager empress *don't* match, and also a "hidden princess" storyline would be stale and a bit boring. Even if it would be fun to watch Jinshi's face when he realizes he's been hitting on his aunt.
@roribeedm9 ай бұрын
Maomao's mother, father, cousin, grandmother, and great-uncle have actually been revealed in the LN. Any hints that she's related to the royal family are definitely a red herring. Won't spoil anything other than that though.
