"I can't believe that trikes aren't more popular." " I wish I could afford one." There's your answer. For something so simple the $2-3k price tag is a shocker. My disabled sister needs a new trike and i'm going to build her a recumbent. Should be able to do it for next to nothing with all the junk bikes i've collected. Hardest part is getting the steering geometry right.

i'm not clear on what, exactly, the pinion crank set is. i get it somehow broadens the gear ratio, but what is it? how does it work? can it be combined with electrification/pedal assist?
@UtahTrikesOnline
@UtahTrikesOnline 4 жыл бұрын
This might help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2rafnyIo5WIjZo The Pinion drive works similar to geared hubs you may be familiar with like the Rohloff or Nuvinci, but instead of being located in the rear wheel it replaces the front crankset. When you spin the crank the chainring turns away different ratios depending on the gear you select. It can be used in its own, which is how it is typically used on mountain bikes, or it can be combined with rear gearing to expand the overall gear range. It can be combined with a rear hub motor.

It was price I had thought about the Cattrike villager but adding the 26 inch rear tire would’ve been over $700. I knew I wasn’t really going to do any hard-core off-road riding so I went with the fat cat crawler. The things that I added set the price from $1999 up to $3200

Would really dig it if you guys would work on designing a handcycle version of your trike. I've seen one handcycle that puts the rider resting on their chest, while cranking w/ the arms?! Would not buy that design for any amount. I know the crank assembly would be the trickiest part of designing a handcycle trike, as I've put considerable amount of time thinking about and drawing my ideas for a handcycle trike, w/ that aspect being my "hang up" in execution of design. I have an older trike called a Lightening, but it is very (scary) unstable at speed and/or in a corner, due to its front-wheel-drive configuration and cambered rear wheels. A rear-wheel-drive trike would be optimal for both traction and stabillity through turns.

I love this trike...even the color is perfect. And, I love the fat tires. But, my budget will top out at little over $1,500. I like the two wheels in the front, better than the 2 wheels in the back. Maybe the prices will go down by next spring or summer when I get my settlement check.

I haven't seen what I'm thinking of yet. I'm a boomer and I had to do e-bike thing to be sure of getting home and that screwed up the balance and I fell and that hurt and I don't like Delta trikes...(and on and on) I want to sit at traffic height. I want the trike to be long and narrow with the wheels, light bar and batteries in front of my feet. (If it has a face the drivers in traffic lose it in the background and forget you are there.) I know someone will steal it so I only want to pay a few hundred dollars for it. Why not use a drive shaft? And why am I the only one that wants one?

We've built several quads with the wheels in front. It makes the quad longer and heavier, so transporting it and storage can become issues. High seat? Sure, we can get the seat height up especially on a quad. Shaft drive? So you want it cheaper and more complicated? Chain is still the most efficient power transfer system and for low power vehicles we don't want to lose any power. It will be a long time before production numbers come up to get prices down significantly and it's unlikely we'll ever see them for a few hundred dollars.

@@UtahTrikesOnline Yea, walmart quality bike parts on a tee frame isn't going to happen. I was just hoping I wasn't going to be welding one up next winter. (I always end up with three of whatever it is.) The drive shaft is for smooth. Think old people and hub motors and we are on a trike because we fall. Sleek and fast yield to strong and steady.

No offense to Utah strikes but the upgrades will certainly blow a budget to hell. Why wouldn't I consider a higher end product?
