As an actual girl who loved this show with a passion, I remember being very disappointed when the show changed. I wasn't really aware of all the executive meddling that had taken place, just knew that my favorite cartoon suddenly seemed... off. I chalked it up to getting "too old for cartoons". Especially Janine! She was awesome, and there were so few really quirky, fun female characters, particularly adults (ie, not the nag or the mom).

Funny enough if I was going to go with the "Body" analogy they were doing... I'd have said that Winston is the eyes. The one who spots how insane things are getting and who (at least in season 1 and the syndicated package) was often the person to spot something that would get turned into a useful idea by the others. Perhaps not as glamorous as "the brains" but better than "Chauffeur", and important, and actually fit the character.

It's pretty telling that Q5 thinks that being a mother is the only thing a little girl (you know, *a child* ) cares about in a character, while boys can like any characters. Nobody's claiming the slimeball gremlin needs to start being more responsible and get a job so he can provide for the family because what else could little boys care about?! I've often heard about stupid demands from the higher ups ruining things, but I've never seen it in this much detail. What a fascinating case study on just how much can get ruined when the executives know barely anything and hire people who know even less. This makes me appreciate the good shows I've seen even more.

As a girl I loved Janine. She was one of few strong, well rounded women characters aside from the X-men and April from Ninja Turtles (on occasion). I hate what they did to her, and I love his defense of her. it's so nice to hear a producer really stick up for a character he created, especially a woman and the fact that he supports her as having her own role, having a real personality, and being a part of the team. What they did to her was really offensive, and a way to brainwash girls into being stupid, "motherly" docile things instead of strong women like Janine. I think this group was threatened by women or black characters that stood out and showed kids that they could be represented too and wanted to shove them in the background as the "mother" and "daisy's driver" lol

I agree 100%,it was offensive, sexist and racist what they did to Janine and Winston. Also,I feel like once the show brought in the Junior Ghostbusters and that once the show made Slimer a central figure and that once the show became ''Slimer And The Real Ghostbusters'',that's when everything started going downhill. I don't know about other fans but I personally, couldn't stand Slimer on the show as a kid(and I can stand him even less now). Frank Welker(the voice actor for Slimer)is one of the great legends of voice-acting but I always felt like the characterization of Slimer on The Real Ghostbusters was insulting to children and to the intelligence of children. I didn't find Slimer being an idiot and a clumsy goofball who is always making a mess and always stealing food from everybody,to be very funny. I think that the show runners were sexist and racist and I think that they thought kids are dumb.

I had my theories when I originally watched this review if they had a hand in Pound Puppies due to how Nose Marie and Bright Eyes were effected. Nose Marie when from a Southern Belle who was Cooler's equal in leadership of the gang to this 50s house wife who was boring while Bright Eyes was the hopefully teenager who wanted a home to just Whooper's 'friend' who was immature and obnoxious as he was and they nearly got rid of Howler who was one of the best characters. And you know what's funny and shows how stupid they were? Remember that rule about skirts vs pants they tried to put on Janine about how they didn't make her look feminie enough....they did the complete opposite of Holly who was supposed to be a 50s style girl with the poodle style skirt! I guess the only thing they did was right was making Bratina a bit more punk but even that's a stretch.....

Anyone who thinks that stuff should be "dumbed down" for kids is crazy. My favourite movies as a kid were usually ones that I ended up enjoying even more as an adult, such as The Iron Giant and The Road to El Dorado. If you dumb something down you generally just skew it so that only _very young kids_ (say five year olds or younger) will enjoy it and when they grow up they'll either think it's stupid or won't remember it.

My favorite cartoon show when I was a kid was Inspector Gadget. I still watch the show on TV today and I find it even funnier because I'm able to mentally picture things like Dr, Claw's HR department holding a job fair for henchmen on his next caper and interviewing them in a very calm businesslike manner hiring them for the job only to have it fail and have him take out all his anger on the henchmen rather than hiring a better HR department.

The actual Ghostbusters movies were adult action comedies, but clearly lighthearted and simple enough for kids to understand since they ate it up to point of a Saturday morning cartoon being created in the first place (while the adult jokes were subtle enough to safely sail over their heads, pioneering the dual-audience system of comedy that would power family movies such as Shrek). Imho, anyone thinking *Ghostbusters* of all things needed to be dumbed down for kids needed their heads examined!

I hated it when they changed Janine. I loved her at first and had no idea why they changed her. Of course, I was way too little to know anything about dumb sexist stereotypes, but as a kid, I didn't react very well to changes in shows I loved, and Janine was the only girl in the Ghostbusters cartoon. And yes, too much Slimer was basically the reason I stopped watching, because he was annoying as fuck.

What in the world did those Q5 idiots see in Janine that made them think she needed to be nurturing and motherly? She was everything but. What is equally as stupid is that they think she has to be a mother to the Ghostbusters, whom they called "boys". They are not boys! They are four grown men completely capable of taking care of themselves.

I'm not joking, I legitimately thought the "Janine" from later in the series was a complete different character than the original portrayal when I was little. And I don't mean that in the way that she WAS a different character, since so much was changed about her she essentially became one. I actually thought Janine got fired or something and they replaced her with a completely different girl that just happened to be named Janine. I was so mad because I couldn't figure out why they fired her. She'd been a Ghostbuster, too, dammit.

That's the exact reason why the Friends spinoff Joey failed so miserably. They tried so hard to make a comic relief character who was always a well meaning idiot into a likable intelligent main character and then surrounded him with other even more insufferable comic relief characters and wondered why audiences ran away from it as fast as their channel changers would let them.

All I wanted to say is, that pink is a clichéd color to market something towards girls. Take a look at most products aimed at young girls. Pink is also often used to make a female character seem naive and weak (clumsy anime maids wearing pink? Check!). Back then, she wore the same uniform as the others, in the Sandman episode for example. Which was her own choice, too, because it was based on her dream. Pink just doesn't fit her character imo. It's just to market her. Maybe they should make Black Widow pink, then she'd finally get an action figure...

Pretty much this, all of this. I remember watching The Real Ghostbusters and liking it, but I remember the show got worse, but I didn't know all of THIS crap with Q5 had happened. These guys are legitimately sexist and racist. It's interesting because everything they said about Winston and Janine really sound like a bunch of REALLY old men with "old fashioned" values of the worst kind. They really must have believed all that "A woman's place is in the kitchen, and black people are only manservants" talk so they just shoved their horrible views on the show and onto all the kids watching. Also, The whole "Ghosts can't be dead people" thing sounds like the braintrust at 4Kids who actually licensed an anime called Shaman King about ghosts and the afterlife and then WEREN'T ALLOWED TO REFERENCE DEATH. Then there's the whole "Kids want to see annoying kids on their show" that caused episodes of Batman The Animated Series to happen like "I've Got Batman In My Basement", and the character "Zack The 5th Turtle" on TMNT, and Wendy and Marvin on the Superfriends when nobody ever liked them. Kids in these shows just get in the way of the heroes we came to see. PLUS, taking a character like Slimer that works in small doses and making him TAKE OVER THE SHOW, just like other shows at the time that start building the show around the comedic mascot sidekick and making the title characters into background characters on their own show and wow.... This just sounds like a huge combination of all the other network interference of other shows, which usually have 1, 2, or maybe 3 issues tops, and piling ALL of the wrong decisions into this one. Just everything that could go wrong sounds like it went wrong. Man, you could almost make a top 10 list of Cartoons That Were Ruined by Executive Meddling DURING The Show. I don't know an exact order yet (so i'm not listing them in a particular order for the most part), but it would probably end up being something like... - *Batman: The Animated Series* (Executive Changes/Character Designs into The Adventures Of Batman & Robin and then The New Batman/Superman Adventures) - *Dexter's Laboratory* (That entire last season with changed actors & designs new writing and animation staff that made everyone and everything boring and unfunny) - *Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles* (The Red Sky Episodes. 'Nuff Said) - *Invader Zim* (Pressure to change, constantly trying to bust Jhonen and Steve Russel's balls over every little thing, deliberate network sabotage, premature cancellation) - *Rugrats* (Adding Dil and Kimi, taking out all semi-adult jokes, conflict and social metaphors replacing them for dumbed down "let's go on a make believe adventure" Nick Jr-esque plots) - *Spongebob Squarepants* (Replacing all the funny, cartoonish timing, sight-gags, risk-taking weird humor for flanderized, blander characters, less creativity and centering episodes on kiddy-ish, special event episodes catered towards pre-grade schoolers) - *Teen Titans/Teen Titans Go* (If you can even count them as the same series, but I kind of do since it's technically a continuation of TT, just a reeeeallly awful, tonally dissonant, immature and stupid one ordered by the network who figure that kids don't want to see an actual superhero show anymore.) - *Young Justice* (Just wow.... Yeah, this one is too much to go into, but anyone who knows why I put it on here, KNOWS why it's on here.) With the top two I would probably have to say being -*The Real Ghostbusters* and -*The Ren & Stimpy Show* Ren & Stimpy was SUCH a gigantically huge case, and arguably the most explosive case ever of "Creative Differences" between animators and a network there ever has been. The John K/Spumco and Nickelodeon/Games split was so big and so fierce, that it actually garnered major news attention and actually came down to real life lawsuits. And there's even been an ENTIRE BIOGRAPHY WRITTEN ABOUT IT called "Sick Little Monkeys: The Unauthorized Ren & Stimpy Story" the details how massive it was and how badly the show suffered because of it. It's on Amazon, even in digital form I believe and is totally worth a read. So that would probably be either #1 or #2.... With The Real Ghostbusters probably being right up there with R&S because it sounds like Ghostbusters had to deal with a little bit of everything that every other show had to deal with and all at the same time, and the way Phelous tells it, these Q5 jackoffs were far more incompetent than anything that Spumco ran up against. So between the two, it's hard to tell who got it worse. And if I had to throw any honorable mentions in there, i'd either bring up The Land Before Time movies (Because Universal would JUST. NOT. LET. IT. DIE.) Josie And The Pussycats (because of course they have to go into space, eventually. Makes sense, except it DOESN'T) and Scooby Doo (Because just Scrappy in general.)

Nicholas Tosoni In my opinion at least yeah shoving Robin in briefly did hurt the show briefly but not majorly so since the writers did what they could and thankfully cooler heads prevailed and that period was VERY brief. Only reason I’m low key mad is that great episode ideas like one that would’ve introduced Black Canary (before Justice League anyway) got thrown out because the executives determined there wasn’t enough Robin in them for kids to relate to. Plus personally aside from a couple episodes I liked that version of Dick Grayson better as Nightwing and I actually think Tim Drake is a better Robin in that show. As for Season 4/New Adventures, yeah agree with the general consensus that OP is misdirecting the blame. If he (or she/they I’m not trying to assume) just doesn’t like the designs, fine it is a valid criticism since some designs worked better than others, but that’s not the executive’s fault. You can blame other things on them, but what made the old DCAU team so awesome was that they did so brilliant ways of getting around their hackery. For example, the suits upstairs proposed a spin-off of a Batman in high school to be hip with the kids and we got Batman Beyond from that rather than what they were probably expecting

Wow. I really think you need to lighten up a bit, Phelous! You'd get more views if you weren't such a grouch all the time. Also, because children are easily confused and unsettled by sarcasm, perhaps you should make a point of laughing after each joke that you make in your videos, so younger viewers can understand that you're only joking, and not being serious. It also might be really helpful if you had a puppet companion of some kind to interact with (like a rabbit or a bear), to improve the pacing of your videos, and to give the audience someone to identify with. Ideally, you could take on a 'smart older brother' type relationship with the puppet, acting as both protector (during the more scary bits of the movies and TV shows you watch) and also as a teacher (for moral lessons and life guidance). Finally, I do think you should probably comb your hair, because children are scared of messy hair, as it implies disorder and untrustworthy people (like the homeless, for example). Please carefully consider these suggestions for improving your video content, and increasing views and subs... and good luck in your future endeavors! Yours, Tony and Co. at the Q5 Consultancy Team

The idea that children can’t handle that the ghost were dead people also happen in the third season of Danny Phantom. By that time Butch Hartman has turn religious so the idea of ghost as dead guys was against his faith, so they turn into monsters from other dimension.
@kimifw58

What are you talking about? It was like that from the beginning. The problem was that this show wasn't SpongeBob SquarePants or Rugrats or Fairly OddParents, so post-2000 Nickelodeon wouldn't let it acknowledge death. Also, Butch had very little control over the show until season three. That's why the quality changed so much.

Weirdly enough the "pretend ghosts aren't dead people" thing was done in Danny Phantom, too. There originally were hints about character's backstories (most famous being Ember's full song indicating she off'd herself after a guy left her) that were cut, and the ghosts had to be more monstrous with the Ghost Zone being more of a separate dimension rather than a limbo of sorts. Season 1 still has a few indicators (including an entire episode about a boy from the 50's being trapped in his school with his bullies getting to possess Danny, Ember as mentioned, and the original backstory of a genie-esque ghost), but by the third it was pretty much gone. That was in 2004-2005. I was around 14 so I noticed super quick and was annoyed, but as a kid I watched Are You Afraid of the Dark ffs. That was on their same network! Did they really think kids were that dumb/sheltered?

When it comes to Western Animation, that's unfortunately common. Spider-man the animated series (you know, the one on Fox in the 90's.) was also #1, but was sabotaged by backstage politics. That scenario was even PETTIER because one executive didn't like the showrunner and specifically went on a campaign to end his passion project.

I hate it when executives ruin shows. There are some good cartoons on right now, shows getting away with stuff you don't always see kid shows get away with, and I'm always just so glad that the shows are able to do what they want right now. It would really suck if Cartoon Network executives suddenly decided that the Crystal Gems should be relegated to background characters because nobody wants to see girls fighting, or that Adventure Time shouldn't have any scary or intense scenes. And, oh god, poor Janine... Speaking as a chick, if I watched this show growing up, I would've been super pissed about the changes.

I'm only 3:45 in and I paused to read the article excerpt and as a female who was a huge fan of "The Real Ghostbusters" but would always turn it off when the episode was one of the "Slimer and the Real Ghostbusters" as a little girl, I'm offended on behalf of one of my favourite childhood shows. I HATED what they did with Janine and to learn it was to 'appeal to girls by making her more maternal and feminine" or whatever as opposed to the awesome and strong version of the original Janine is well, I agree with the sexist remark. It's always been a huge pet peeve of mine when people don't give kids enough credit. Anyway, I love original Janine, but Peter was my favourite character. Hated what the changes did to his character too, even as a 'dumb' kid who obviously wouldn't like how the jokes went over by dumb childish head. Yeah, I missed some of the jokes, but there was enough that I did get to make it great, and it's why the original series still holds up (despite the cheap animation).

So "ABC Presents Q5's Slimer And The Real Ghostbusters" was the "Disney's Brand Spanking New Doug" of its day. One or two of these changes (like voice replacement) may have been unfortunate if overall harmless, but to pile on so many at once (like dumbing down character personalities) was just overwhelming and led to it being disregarded. The main difference is that while everyone thought it was ABC's executive meddling in Doug's case, it was just creator Jim Jenkins trying out new things to keep the show interesting and fresh... when, like TRGB, viewers (like me) wanted more of the same thing that wasn't broken to begin with. I can at least respect Jenkins for the attempt even if I wasn't a fan.

I get the feeling Poultrygeist and Stay Tooned, two awful Q5 episodes, would have been decent in the original run of the show if they had better executions of their concepts. Imagine that in Poultrygeist the curse managed to be spread to the whole city because of chickens infected by the original creature, causing a massive outbreak. The guys have to stop it but with the added danger of all of them being potentially infected. For Stay Tooned, reality as a whole is warped because of the ghost entering the TV and the ghostbusters take advantage of the fact that they can't really be hurt anymore to have some fun. But as time goes on reality threatens to rip itself apart because of some kind of pseudo-scientific explanation and they have to reverse the changes before everything is destroyed. With some better writing and the clear danger factor the original good episodes had, they could've been decent, even genuinely good episodes. What other bad episodes post Q5 do you think could have worked on the original run?

Samhain called him a traitor once, maybe have Slimer dealing with ghostly bounty hunters, or since a ghost is just a dead person usually, have him meet his descendants or we have an ep where we go back to when he was alive & we find he had a tragic backstory; something, ANYTHING.....maybe things coulda been salvaged.......maybe............
