This is my 2012 Gibson SG Standard - one of the nicest guitars I've ever played! I already had a Gibson Les Paul and Decided to get a Gibson SG on a whim. As soon as the Gibson SG arrived I knew it was epic. Amazing feel and tone.
I know Gibson went through some rough patches but their guitars are still great. If you want a nitrocellulose fnish, you have to go with a full fat American Gibson guitar.
Buying a Gibson SG Standard instead fo a second Gibson Les Paul was the best choice I ever made. The plan was to try it for a while then sell it but it quickly became apparent that the slim body of the Gibson SG made it incredibly playable especially if you play for longer periods of time.
A lot of the American Gibson guitars come with the stock Gibson 490r and Gibson 498t humbuckers, just like my Gibson Les Paul did. These are a fantastic sounding set of humbuckers and are hard to beat so I'm glad they came in my Gibson SG.
One other thing I prefer about the Gibson SG over my Gibson Les Paul is that the 3 way toggle switch is near the other controls. Personally I find this a bit more efficient but each to their own.
This Gibson SG Standard came with a hard case, bound neck and trapezoid inlays. It looks and feels great. If you're on the fence about getting a Gibson SG Standard, go for it.
The Gibson SG Standard Ebony looks the best in my opinion. You always see the Gibson SG cherry red but the Gibson SG ebony to me just looks better especially if you make all the hardwear black like I've done.

I picked up a Gibson SG standard late last year and it quickly became my favorite guitar. I love it and connected with it way faster than I have with any other guitar before. I love all the tones I can get out of it and it plays and looks like a dream, I’m so glad I decided to give it a chance.

I chose the SG Standard (2019) in August of 2019 as my first electric Guitar. I have two other electric guitars now. The SG remains out of the case and gets more play time then the other two. I recently bought a Marshall DSL 20 to make my SG sing properly. Thanks for your review.

I have a Gibson SG special faded cherry from 2007, and I absolutely love the thing. It was my first proper electric, and I would love to get a standard sometime. Your SG looks beautiful in the black finish, especially with those Grover tuners!

That nitro ebony finish is something else. Getting one here in the UK is near impossible there’s not many shops and the online business’s usually list them as ‘out of stock’ or ‘on order.’

Had an Cherry Red Epiphone SG G-400 Pro from new, which was a great guitar and liked it's 'feel', so decided to take the plunge and search for a Gibson SG Standard. Managed to find a 2018 model locking Grovers (factory) 61 pickups in Autumn shade colour on ebay. I obviously wanted a cherry red one but opted for this one and am not disappointed in the colour. It has the smaller scratch plate with pickup rings which I prefer to the pickups screwed into the scratchplate. It's in near mint condition all standard spec in a Gibson hard case . The sound is fantastic and vast improvement on the Epiphone although that was by no means a bad guitar just sold that last week. God that Gibson Nitro smell is intoxicating. With no fly away holidays for over a year (money saved there) decided after loving the SG so much to get a Gibson Les Paul Standard in Cherry burst, again I love this guitar. I already have an Epiphone Les Paul Plus top Pro in Honeyburst, which I've heavily modified (Obsidian wire electronics, Switchcraft jack and 3 way switch, Graphtech nut Locking Grovers and Seymour Duncan Nickel covered Pearly gates Neck & Bridge). This is a brilliant sounding guitar and love it (my first guitar/love) so I'll never sell it, but I'm so glad I invested in the Gibsons. I also bought a while back a Mexican Player series Telecaster after your reviews about them and you were right these are fantastic guitars for the money. To be fair my wife has been very supportive of me and not kicked off much about my guitar collection although she doesn't really know the full extent of my collection of 15 guitars, I just tell her the average guitarist has 16 guitars till the next one then it'll be 17......Thanks for all your vids I find them very informative. Good luck with swelling your subscriber numbers....

There is a lot of good reviews all over the place on SG Standards and i haven't watched or read a bad one. I actually own a brand new 2022 SG Standard and the 1st thing i noticed it felt like quality and then sounded like quality, thing is not everyone can be mistaken about them and subsequently you won't go wrong if you buy one. Gibson should be paying us guys for all the good stuff we say about their SG Standards lol

I've always had SG's and love them for playing live due to the weight, have a Les Paul too, which is a great guitar, but for transporting and standing up playing for two hours the SG is far more user freindly! As for neck dive, my old explorer was a contender for the olympic diving team...

Props for playing it clean. I love my SG (mine is in cherry red) In the year 2020 I bought and sold so many different guitars looking for "The" sound. I bought a PRS SE Custom 24 but the thing was too thin, trebly, and didn't feel nice. Sold. Bought a Fender player Strat. Sounded amazing, really authentic strat sound, but the sharpest frets I've ever felt on any guitar and the tuners were shit. Sold. Schecter PT special. Not worth the hype. Sold. Then I tried out an SG in GC and I was blown away. It was a perfect blend between the thick, buttery Les Paul tone and the Twangy Telecaster sound. I haven't been able to put it down since. Hoping to one day pass it down to my son or daughter 🤘🏻

Thank you for this, although it hasn't helped my severe GAS for an SG at all! Also thank you for a totally clean demo, so rare these days and very much appreciated. It seems the Les Paul gets the most attention, but the SG remains Gibson's best selling solid body guitar. Clearly there's a reason for this. The only one I've ever played was a 1967 model a mate had and that was back around 1980. I remember loving it but not much more. I need to get my mitts on one. Soon!

Besides the lighter body the neck also attaches at the 21st fret vs the 16th fret on a Strat, another light bodied guitar, and the Les Paul, which is not a light bodied guitar. lol So, the neck is hanging further off the side of the guitar pulling down more. When I 1st tried a Strat after playing a LP, which feels like it's locked in a gravity well, for a while it felt neck heavy to me too. But like anything else you adjust. The tall skinny frets and narrow rounder fretboard on the Strat were more bothersome. I always feel like the guitar is fighting me. But if you want the Strat sound, you deal with it. And as far as the whole "tone wood" debate? Why can't people just let other people hear what they can and you not hear what you can't. I promise I won't tell you that you can hear something if you tell me you can't. ;-) And beware Dylan. He attributes every difference to the sound to what he sells and makes money on. And of course every teeny tiny difference in a pickup is MASSIVE if you listen to him. But he can buy the cheapest lowest quality guitar parts and still charge a luthier's premium. Rant/off. Enjoy your guitar, mate!
@hybro8
@hybro8 3 жыл бұрын
Wood makes about a 1% difference. Usually comes down to fretboard material either maple or rosewood and that 1% difference can be removed by using the tone control or EQ on the Amp. So theoretically you are correct, wood itself makes no difference.

Had 4 different Sg s all gibsons at different times . Go to for stage Lpj us. Bought new epi phone 200.00 s g special . Put grovers and Gibson made p90 at the bridge and this &$#@*(&$&$# rocks . It has finish better than any us made , it plays as well as anything else I own ,it stays in tune . The ultimate test of any guitar for me is I forget what axe I’m playing 2 seconds into the 1st song. I only think about what I am playing if it starts misbehaving

I think the lesser neck break angle of Epiphones helps a lot with tuning. It’s almost at the point where every guitar comes off a CnC machine so it doesn’t matter where in the world it was created. I do love this US SG though

What about neck "tone" wood? I've seen a few videos where people are like "i don't believe in tone wood but yeah a maple and rosewood neck have a different tone to them" 😕
@PherotoneStudios
@PherotoneStudios 3 жыл бұрын
How random. I didn’t like the tone of a strat, not enough high end, and people suggested changing it to a maple fretboard. Made zero difference. I do have some tonal experiments coming up though and although I’d say the wood contributes about 1% to the sound, it does seem to make a tiny difference. Not enough to warrant chowing a guitar for though.

@andreil1234
@andreil1234 10 ай бұрын
@@Ottophil That's the new and savvy hip thing to say. However experience proves that is not exactly the case. The whole guitar body acts as an eq / filter and does affect string vibration, amplifying certain oscillations and dampening others. If wood / construction didn't matter you'd not have "dead spots" or "wolf notes" and all guitars of a given scale length with the same hardware and pickups and setup would sound exactly the same. The pickups amplify whatever the guitar puts out. If for some reason it lacks bass, mids or treble, the pickups won't magically put what's lacking right back. It's GIGO. Putting Fralins in a dead sounding tele (regardless of what it's made of) won't help it too much. They'll probably improve what's on offer already, but throw them into a better tele with more desirable construction and higher quality materials and they will shine in various different ways. If construction affects tone, then wood is also in itself structure just like bolt on vs set / vs neckthrough. It can affect what you end up hearing as tone several ways. No pickup set that's not grossly compressed and over-wound ever sounds the same in two different guitars, same setup, same model, consecutive serial numbers even. So then, there are recipes, wood sourcing, storage and treatment and all the experience that goes into building stuff with certain goals in mind. The wood makes no difference TO the pickups, but it does make a difference to how the strings oscillate and ring at every frequency and certain species of woods do *tend* to have certain characteristics when using them to build *certain* models. One big difference wood makes is playability though. Having a sturdy and stable neck makes the whole guitar slinkier to play, regardless of setup. If that wood easily moves, in general that makes the guitar harder to play even with a low action buzz free setup. All great guitars I've tried have that in common: really sturdy necks. And that makes one heckuva difference for what kind of tones you can spit out of it. Wood makes a big difference, however often in ways that would be way too difficult to measure as it also involves a feedback loop with the player. Everything matters, even if the biggest difference is made by MIC -> Speaker -> cabinet -> power amp -> tone stack -> preamp -> cable -> pickups -> -setup -> guitar usually in this order. But a tiny rock can make some big ripples in the lake the other way around. Nobody says "buy in on that magic tonewood nonsense". But you don't have to go full on at the other end of the spectrum like your brain's a computer and only knows 0 and 1. :)
