Excellent review! I think it might become popular as high end camper. More comfortable to drive than diesel, no range limitations that pure EVs have, battery could probably be used for kitchen equipment and heating.

Congrats! Nice, accurate, easy, and at the same time deep description of this PHEV Ford Tourneo Custom 2019 model.

Thomas says he prefers Tourneo Custom shape - nice van, personally I think I prefer T6 shape! I like this test vehicle's bright contrasting interior. Shame no ACC. Worse: PHEV 20K extra cost. Thanks for the sandwich! Personally, I'd want to avoid horrid charging stations, and I love electric mode, so a PHEV - with a decent electric range of course - appeals! Not sure if I prefer "VW/BMW/Merc type PHEV system" or this 'range extender' system! But all very expensive. Very good commentary, and driving Thomas. Many thanks.

I have always wanted one of these, with the long wheelbase and double rear tyres and a camper van interior :-D Man, I mean, I am actually excited about this! If it could do a few days of my commute on full electric, I could literally have my home at my back and be economic about it too!

the problem with commercial EVs is that, with current regulations, the heavy batteries eat away load capacity pretty quickly. Legislators should increase the limit from 3500kg (that was set decades ago anyway) to 4000kg

that's how all PHEV drivetrains should be implemented. With the engine acting just as a generator, and indeed a 20-30kWh battery to cover most daily driving. This kind of design would, in theory, allow to transition to a full BEV in a few years, should new battery technology increase energy density significantly.

I've seen somewhere the top speed is 120 km/h. Also, I'm not sure how long can it keep that speed (without overloading the electric motor). Do you have any information about that? It would be nice to be able to use this on the highway as well, even if it's just occasional.
@TL-xw6fh5 жыл бұрын
It definitely needs at least 40kWh battery to make it a realistic people carrier. A taxi company cannot use this in fully electric mode for long in London!

We have a Transit Custom exactly as the one of the video but in grey and with the 2.0 130hp diesel engine, but we don't regret not having waited for this PHEV version, it's increase of price it's not justified. We love it's interior and exterior, the best value for money of this segment, however it's consumption it's too high: the six speed auto it's too short, running at around 2500 rpm when going at 120km/h. To put it on context, the 2.8 diesel 2002 old Citroen Jumper we used to drive had a similar consumption. Maybe the price increment of the Mercedes Vito is justified as I heard it goes around 6l/100 on highway (thank's to it's 9 speed transmition).

The 20K extra cost is just crazy, and for me not worth it. I think it is a poor attempt from Ford to electrify a combustion designed platform; an experiment? To its creditability, the ride experience may impress, but that is not enough to appeal. Hopefully Ford is able to produce a capable full electric transit, newly build up from scratch, without the premium price tag in the future. Very good review!

Is there some GPS-Geofencing type thing to keep it in EV mode, especially in environmental zones (and especially EV-only zones), such as older areas of towns and cities with narrow streets? If there isn't, that's something Ford should add

Replace Ford US management, why can't they make PHEV vans available inside the United States...as if the only intelligent people on earth are in Europe. US Auto companies' management needs to be replaced in general, along with Trump and they should be punished for all the air quality damage their environmental protection rollbacks they have caused.

So if the Engine does not power the Wheels then this is not really a PHEV more like a REEV. :D But 50km electric range is a bit disappointing, also only 1-Phase charger. :(
@TL-xw6fh5 жыл бұрын
Not sure what the problem is here. This is the most efficient way to configure a PHEV since the ICE is operating at it's most efficient most of the time whilst charging the batteries. Also the electric motor produces 100% torque from standstill and it is most efficient in low to medium speed driving which this vehicle is designed for thus maximising total drive efficiency.

they still insist on having that heavy, lung cancer engine in the vehicle, instead of more batteries... PS: if you don't have a good battery contract for large quantities, you can get batteries for 150USD/kWh ... so that 15kWh battery cost Ford like 2500USD ... plus another 1000USD for the electric motor (+800USD for the generator), and maybe another 1000USD for the electrical system. Long story short, they (Ford + suppliers) want to make 15K USD profit on this van.
