Blue rank: Is when you understand your character to a respectable level and are busy implementing their specific gameplan during matches. Also Kishin & Bushin specifically are when you'll start finding matches against Tekken Kings and above who will begin to shut down your hard earned character gameplan with even harder earned "Small Tekken". You'll start seeing your setups and strings recognized and punished forcing you to train in, and understand, "Small Tekken" before you can start up your character gameplan This imo, is where REAL Tekken growth happens
@seenmess32283 ай бұрын
Yeah I noticed recently that they often don't know my setups but still manage to punish most of my moves.... it's giving me mixed signals honestly Oftentimes their defense is so solid that my offense becomes a detriment to myself.
@zer0cx1103 ай бұрын
As a tekken king , I agree that statement . But that’s the thing.. once you get to that point, you should also be learning your opponents character
@skwadboss3 ай бұрын
I dunno i feel like maybe american blue ranks are not as good as europe. Because i dnt see how u can get 2 kishin etc without being able to play "small tekken" for me small tekken and punishes set up big tekken 🤷🏽♂️ or maybe I'm better than my rank. But still blue ranks ahould have some pretty good fundamentals. But some charachters carry you because no one knows the matchup
@FGCDean3 ай бұрын
@@zer0cx110 yeah being in tekken king for almost a week now ive learned that matchup knowledge becomes a lot more of the deciding factor of the match. I find ill go on good win streaks and get close to emperor if I run into drag, steve, nina, and victor due to my comfortability in my knowledge of what they will do. (not to mention the characters ive played and gotten comfortable with piloting myself) Where as if I run into raven, yoshi, claudio, reina, leo, or lidia (just to name a few) I get intimidated by my lack of knowledge in the matchup and it leads to losses and potential losing streaks if I run into them back to back.
@thmistrapillay18113 ай бұрын
@skwadboss Interesting. I'm a TG & from South Africa and 50% of my matches are from Africa so I don't know if there's too much of a difference between the regions, I always felt the skill levels were relatively universal until you get to TK and above

Tekken 7 I bought the definitive addition and was extremely put off by the high learning curve and large cast (legacy games are intimidating!). Tekken 8 is the first game in the series that got me to jump in and want to learn, and a huge part of my success so far (about to hit purple ranks w/ Yoshi) was this channel and the resources for learning the system mechanics and core gameplay. I wouldn't be playing good ass Tekken today, if I didn't have an awesome teacher like you. Thank you for everything you do for this community!

Blue player (and pushing for TK) reporting in. Love your videos, Phi. I find it interesting that frame that "people got to blue ranks differently" concept by framing it specifically around this idea that each character plays differently and not that each player approaches the game differently. Two good friends of mine are Red and (recently promoted) Purple who both play the same character, and we all play with a friend who's Tekken God. We all spend a lot of time talking about how, the three of us below Tekkon God, all approach the game so very differently. I would be super interested in some sort of side-by-side comparison of two separate matches by two players of the same intermediate rank, breaking down the things they're doing right in their general gameplan and the areas they can improve. Keep it up!

I think its typically you are good at one or two thing but fail at others, and if you cover everything its basically top ranked stuff. It also require a lot of character knowledges, basically general generic stuff aren't enough anymore and you need to dive into specific match up or even down to a specific setup, learning their options and knowing yours so you don't pick a "always lose" option.

Pt 1 he talked about doing the right things and holding alot of shit (which can be true at times) and you broke down how he'd rather hold his mash vs holding back too long. In this 1, He ask a curious question of what do Tekken characters want? And you explain the Matrix to him again by saying "Whatever you're getting hit by is the real problem, not so much the character" Love the engagement and information on both sides 👏🏽

In my experience, "using your frame traps" is something I tell most intermediate players. They understand that frame data exists, but don't understand the concept of turn taking, or using frame disadvantages to their advantage with options like parrys and movement. It has really opened the doors for many of the people i've worked with.
@Joshbehe3 ай бұрын
I'm a blue rank player. I feel like my main issues lie in executing on what I intellectually know I need to do. I can break 95%of throws in practice mode, but break maybe 15% grand in match. I know a lot of strings that can be ducked or stepped or low parried, but can rarely execute in a match. I think my mental stack gets overloaded easily, and I end up falling back into bad autopilot habits, and tilting a bit when I can't execute on the knowledge I have.
@Peter-wg3dn3 ай бұрын
I think its exactly what he is talking about in the video you just need to get more comfortable in the match so you can focus on those things and once you do you will be able to implement the knowledge.
@HoudiniMartin3 ай бұрын
That’s the secret my guy. After upper blue, even the worst of the worst will have 90+ Appeal, which signifies they are using almost 100% of their moveset. Gold and Up is trying to overload you with information and break down your defense because everybody at that level for the most part has full throw break knowledge, knows how to negate scrubby strings and gimmicks, good movement, etc. but you can shut that down if you overstack their expectations of what comes next. You will get out of blue once you learn to ANTICIPATE more than READ what a player will do.

That's a really good point about intermediate tekken. Everyone has learned something, but there are a 1000 things to learn and everyone is free to engage with or ignore any aspect they choose. I came to Tekken as an older gamer who never played fighting games and it was very difficult for me. For years I was flailing around trying to familiarize myself with such a deep system. Now I'm between low purple and blue and there are some things I'm pretty good at while in other ways I'm still incredibly inept. I still lock in 10 frame punishes 95% of of the time because it's more reliable than trying to choose a better i12 or i14 option. I'm mostly pretty bad at reaction checks. Other people at this rank, their deficiencies are all over the place. Some people don't block punish ANYTHING but can flash duck like crazy. Others don't even know their BnBs but have decent defense and reads. A Mishima who does everything except use an electric. Yesterday there was a flowcharty King who didn't seem to know anything except his own offense but also had a perfect KBD. It's nuts out there. Oops this is too long.

I’ve just got into the Red Ranks and see that my ‘Spirit’ went up (in all aspects), retained my ‘Appeal’, but my attack frequency went down from S+ to S and is going lower. My defence still sucks tons of ass despite knowing what’s coming mentally. I haven’t been playing consistently to go up the ranks. All I’ve been thinking is how to answer enemy game plans, but thinking makes my reaction slower and I’m hitting my 30s now. My reaction time is no longer that good. Am I complaining? Nope. It’s fun fighting those similar ranks to me. I feel no ‘spirit’ to rank up despite the game telling me I do. My defence will go up with experience and mind games levelling up. I know what to do so I’m just going to try reducing mistakes over time. That’s my way of raising ranks.

Your intro reminds me of how League coaches in my experience tend to focus on laning phase. They'll tell you it's because that's where most of your problems are, and that if you Lane correctly the rest of the game should click, but in my opinion that's only half the story. They aren't wrong, but I think that at least half the reason they do it that way is because it's what's most efficient for THEM, so they can get on to the next client. Most of the time it probably doesn't matter, but on the other hand, sometimes you make mistakes in the laning phase and still have 20 more minutes of game to play. Anyway, sounds like intermediate Tekken has similar clarity issues

Phi, I'm a Reina main and I'm struggling with mental. Specifically, I get nervous in ranked no matter what I do and it causes me to think less. So I try to not go into autopilot and play the game, but the nervousness turns into tilt when I don't know what's going on (unfamiliar matchups, or frame tramps, etc), and it's a really annoying cycle that gets in the way. I get mad at myself for not relaxing and thinking more clearly and being nervous, then if I get a moment to breathe and if my opponent isn't cheesing I can play and understand where I'm being outplayed and even say 'nice' when I notice a good play by my opponent. However if they are cheesing that moment to breathe quickly goes away and I feel robbed which makes me mad at myself for not being calm enough to deal with the stupid cheese. It's a very vicious cycle with some breaks here and there if the match is actually normal (not common at my ranks, I'm just below red rank). I found myself forgetting some moves I used with Reina when I first learned her (took it very seriously), and even my combos drop almost all the time now (and my electrics are far less consistent).

Random question. Who do you think are the 3-5 scariest characters to be stuck at the wall against? Love your drills series btw 😇 I’ve been playing tekken as a newcomer for 2 weeks and I’m about to breach into red ranks. I’m hoping to only be in red for a few weeks maybe less. One of the best pieces of information I’ve received from you is that this game is button based not movement based which helped me change my mindset from trying to replicate gameplay i had been used to seeing (I’m a newbie but I have been a spectator of T7 for a long time) to playing to T8’s strengths and I’m on a pretty decent win streak rn.

I find Nina easy target for my Kuma because of the 10 frame counter, 2,1 pokes and df4 poke, it stops most of their pressure game and allows you to do yours if you want. Or keep backdashing into pokes but that's not very sustainably doable in Tekken 8 aggression and in bears.

Blue rank is half people actually playing solid and half people abusing MU knowledge. If you become solid and gain some MU knowledge you beat 50 of the people almost consistently and the other 50% half the time so you have around 70% win rate. Then you get to gold where it's mostly people playing solid the higher you go. Sure, you find the pluggers and the 1&doners and the cheaters but they are like 20-30% at Tekken King and even less as you climb.
