Years back at an Ozzfest that Down was playing at… Phil and the band / some others came to the main stage to watch Ozzy.. Obviously they had no tickets they walked up from behind the main stage… So after some time.. me and my buddy’s reached out.. extended out gratitude to Phil and the band. Phil was fucking awesome.. so nice to us.. so gracious and humble.. Eventually a security guard realized that a bunch of people were in the seats where before no one was.. so he comes up and asks them for their tickets.. Not being “big timers” and assholes… They were legit going to leave.. But me and my buddies stepped in on their behalf and essentially said.. “Hey… that’s Phil Anselmo.. Lead singer of Down, Pantera, Super Joint… Him and his band stays.. (Rex was there too..)” Guard was cool and backed off.. Phil and the whole band were super cool about it.. Thanked us for doing it.. Again.. they were not going to be assholes and act like big timers to a security guard.. and they didn’t want attention on them.. Hung out with them for Ozzy’s set.. It was one of th best concert memories ever.. Most likely the best..

I hope that Phil has made peace with himself concerning what all went down between him and Dimebag and Vinnie Paul. Drug addiction is a horrible gorilla on your back which, like Dave Mustaine said, doesn't let you stop until the gorilla stops. Phil did not initially get that back surgery because he felt that he could not disappoint the band and the fans but drug and alcohol pain therapy was a much worse solution.

Fuck pain pills and those who give them. C-4 through C-7 fused and no disks from sports. Later a car accident where I got rear ended by a guy doing 50 and I was stopped. Cracked T2 through T4, and C2 has a permanent notch that makes my head stick. Stenosis to a level I can barely walk and need a cane. All double bulging or burst disks between my head and tail. Pretty well bound to a half hour at a time on my feet and I haven't been out of a three-mile radius in ten years. Yeah, life hurts. I say this because I got to hang with the band several times and even have an "official Pantera nickname" by Dime at a show. Phil did a lot to himself.

Nobody is perfect and it does disappoint me that Phil has spewed talking points about black on black crime rates because there's nothing less metal than being a defender of authority and corruption and helping bootlicker talking points. I don't think he's racist persay, but his views on police brutality need alot of work. But with as much time as he's spent in Texas, what do you expect? All that aside, Phil is a fascinating guy to listen to and he's not a bad person. And this may be controversial but Vinnie and Dimes family not letting Phil at the funeral was selfish. They were making it about THEM. Dime and Vin blame Phil's addiction for everything and forget that his back pain and what got him started was the fact that Phil beat himself bloody and messed his body up going nuts and putting on the most intense show possible for THEIR band.
