He was the original lead singer of Genesis from 1964 to 1975. Phil Collins played drums and sang harmony from 1970 when he joined to when Peter Gabriel left.. Phil Collins replaced him on vocals from 77 forward while remaining as drummer in the studio and live duets

This song really was a profound statement back in the day and still resonates now... It is telling of the trials and tribulations of life and relationships and finally finding the one that completes you... it is diving deep into the feeling, without the façade we all wear day to day, spoken without reservations or pride from the core of our being, of truly becoming one entity with another and the longing and desire when one must be away from that union. At least that is what *I* always took from it... Brad Got It Totally! Not sure where Lex was going, but this one is points for Brad!

I do hope they watch the live version of this from the Secret World tour. If a person hasn't seen Gabriel present his music live--which like Floyd and Bowie is always very theatrical--it's hard to fully appreciate how these songs 'work' as art. It's like hearing Sledgehammer without seeing the official video. The sound gains another layer if it's accompanied by some form of Gabriel-approved visual.

Also, the song is about how SHE is able to lift HIM out of fits of despair, and makes the struggle of living worth it. In its simplest terms, anyway. Also, the African influence comes from the S. African musicians who played and sang on this album. Instead of just boycotting S. Africa over apartheid, a lot of white artists from the US, the UK and Europe at this time decided to actively seek out S. African artists for collaboration, as a way to kind of thumb their noses at the apartheid government. The more you know...

Love you two... to me Gabriel is singing to everyone... it's a spiritual song, that we are all brothers and sisters... 'in your eyes' he looking at everyone.. he sings about 'when he gets lost' and no matter which way he goes all roads lead back to God.. 'the grand facade soon will burn' to me means this system that creates chaos and tries to separate us from each other and God will soon come to an end... and when he loses his pride he can reach out and connect with love from the inside (his heart)... looking at the world seen through God's eyes.. in God's eyes he is complete and the answer to fruitless searches... maybe i'm getting carried away and i guess a google search will reveal Gabriel's true meaning for the song... but the African/World beat is very catchy... as others have pointed it out - the live version/performance is awesome and brings more meaning to the song... sorry too long but there you are... keep up the good work...

This song is clearly about a man who wanted to be what his woman, whom he held in absolutely high esteem, wanted him to be but he was unable to be. It's not a failure love song but a song about not being able to match, because of pride, what she deserves and how she see him. Artists are emotionally unpredictable and it's difficult for those who are intimately involved with them. I think that's what this song is about.

Peter Gabriel went exploring Africa and Asia in the late 1970s. He brought back and recorded a number of musicians. Their collaborations resulted in Gabriel's African-influenced third and fourth solo albums, in 1980 and 1982. These records exposed the rest of the Western world to ancient African polyrhythms and esoteric percussion instruments. Gabriel's 1980 song "Biko" also exposed the evils of South Africa's Apartheid regime to the Western world, leading to its eventual downfall and the freeing and presidency of Nelson Mandela. Phil Collins played drums for a couple of tracks on Gabriel's third album. During one session, Gabriel and his sound engineer discovered and then developed the Gated Drum Reverb sound, a huge technological advance that Phil used on his own first solo album the next year -- most notably in the hit "In the Air Tonight". This became known as the "Phil Collins Sound" but it was Peter's innovation, and it changed the entire musical landscape, all over the world. As others here have written, Peter co-founded the Progressive Rock band Genesis. In 1970, they hired a young theatre actor named Phil Collins, who quickly proved to be one of the greatest drummers in Rock and Jazz history. Phil also sang backing vocals for Peter, and they did sound very similar after five years of harmonizing. Genesis is easily one of the top three greatest Progrssive Rock bands ever, along with Yes and either Pink Floyd or King Crimson, depending on your point of view.

Peter Gabriel was the primary songwriter and lead vocalist for the classic period of Genesis. Once Phil Collins joined Genesis, Phil did a lot of harmony vocals along with Peter, most of the time simply doubling the same melody being sung by Peter and adding a very special quality to the band's vocals. Genesis was more popular than the Beatles for a while in England, and Peter Gabriel was a huge celebrity as a result of that popularity. Peter donned a variety of bizarre costumes for live performances, and the theatrical nature of a live Genesis performance back in the the day was a big part of Genesis' success, but Peter came to feel unsettled and restless with his role in Genesis, and left to have a great solo career, although I think he had more success as a solo act in Europe than in the USA. The band was a bit distraught about having their lead singer, songwriter, and onstage performer leave them, and they searched high and low for a replacement lead singer. They eventually got sick of auditioning people (I think they hosted about 60 tryouts), and Phil sort of got up and said "Fuck this, I already know all the songs, give me a chance", and, so, music history was made. Fans of Genesis have argued for almost half a century now as to whether Gabriel or Collins was the better lead singer for the band. Collins almost certainly learned to truly sing while doubling Peter's vocals in the early Genesis albums, and fans typically wanted The Olde Songs to sound as near to same as possible to the versions originally sung by Peter, so Collins delivered them in much the same style during live performances. I was surprised to hear Lex quickly say that Gabriel sounds like Collins, but given the history involved, I suppose it really isn't that surprising that people might think so. Having lived through the entire period that Genesis has been making music, I'm used to fans typically noting the differences rather than the similarities.

Peter was the primary singer, not the primary songwriter. Where did you get that from? Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford were responsible for most lyrical writings and compositions. Gabriel however did write all the lyrics to the Lamb.

One of my all time favorite songs. Peter Gabriel is a brilliant lyricist. I was so lucky to see Genesis while he was still a member. The sounds of different genre, different cultures he brings. Like in this song. Has an African rhythm to it maybe. I believe the original video shows the musicians. I'll have to look for it Great song

Peter is a musical Genius, this is a great song of love and how that person makes you feel how they are your all. The line, "Of all the fruitless searches" means all the other people they been with they have finally found that perfect one.

Genesis told stories with their songs. When Peter left, they tried to keep that vibe, but eventually Phil went to pop songs to make money. Peter kept with his art and his dynamic music

You absolutely MUST watch the live version of this song from Athens. Gabriel is joined on stage by Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour for what is, in my opinion, one of the best live performances of any song ever. The sheer joy and vitality in the performance is breathtaking to behold!

I always find it so strange and funny when people (many, many people) say that Peter and Phil’s voices sound similar! To me, they don’t sound similar, but they both have been lead singers of the same band, Genesis, at different times: Peter at the beginning and then, when he left, Phil took over the role. They’ve also stayed great friends always, so I guess you could say they’re like brothers, yes 😄

Plenty others have extolled the wonderfulness of Peter in these threads, so I must mention an integral part of Peter's sound. On this track, as well as all of his albums, is the legendary bass and Chapman Stick player, Tony Levin. Tony was a part of the legendary progressive rock giant, King Crimson as well as the newer super group, Liquid Tension Experiment. He was also performed with Yes and Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe. The bass lines he creates are so rich and unique but completely serve the song. He was the creator of the Funk Fingers as was in the Peter Gabriel song "Steam". He is a master of his craft with a very distinct style.

Peter & Phil started off in the same band - the amazing Genesis. Many times Phil, the drummer, would sing backing & harmonies with Peter singing lead. Some excellent PG songs are San Jacinto, Blood of Eden and Biko. Also I Know What I Like, Carpet Crawlers and Firth of Fifth with Genesis.

Yay! You did it. 🙌 Peter Gabriel is really a musical genius. Oh yeah, the Sting video (every breath you take) you guys were talking abt sampling from older songs to rap songs. (Sting/P Diddy) Anyway, Tu Pac did a popular one in the 90s "changes" i believe its called. You guys should check out that one if you havent heard it (Brad, you may know it already) and the popular original called "the way it is" by Bruce Hornsby from 80s. Tu Pac sampled the main piano riff. The piano skills in "the way it is" -mind blowing! 🤯 Happy holidays guys! Be safe! ✌❤

Nah. Peter Gabriel is in a class all his own. Most closely related to World Music. Guy has top notch African Musicians. His bass player on Secret World Live is the one who inspired me to pick up bass guitar all those years ago.

You should have passed on the shortened lyric version of this song, and instead, chosen the extended live concert version. It will completely change the power of this song. Peter Gabriel is a visual artist and this song without the stage performance is an affront to his genius.

To date one of the greatest concerts I have experienced was Peter Gabriel’s back in like 91’. I have been to roughly 100 concerts, and this was up there with Rattle and Hum (U2) and David Gray in Dublin. It was truly a great show and Peter was sooo on point
