Once you learn this was written in anticipation of his confronting his ex wife for a divorce the song takes on a whole different meaning.

He wrote this song about catching his wife cheating on him with another man and going through a divorce. Listen to the song again in that context and it will make sense. Phil Collins considers himself a drummer first and a singer second. He's amazing! This is real music!

If there was ever a performance that can be called 'mesmerizing', this is it. Keep in mind that singing and playing the drums is extremely difficult, more than other instruments. The physical movement of drumming throws your voice off, and then you have 5 different rhythums you're keeping track of in your head (2 feet, two hands, and the melody)
@ohauss
@ohauss 2 жыл бұрын
Singing and SITTING is already difficult, because you're constraining your lungs and your diaphragm, but then playing the drums on top needs a lot of energy as well, and hence, air, so makes it that much harder.

@@ohauss You would think it would be hard, but it's not really. I've been singing solos at my church for over twenty years and sometimes I play piano while I'm singing. Now, singing and playing drums at the same time is a different story. I guess that's why there's not many singers who also play drums and I have nothing but respect for anybody who can do it.

Phil came to everyone's attention as the drummer for the group Genesis. After the original lead singer left, he also became the lead singer for the band. He then had a great career as a solo artist. He does have a very powerful voice and was strong enough to sing while playing. Phil no longer performs on stage, mainly because of his health. He feels that he is no longer strong enough to sing and play the drums anymore. So instead of disappointing his fans, and wearing himself out on stage and giving his fans a subpar performance, he retired from performing. Great reaction to a fabulous song.

Oh Man, there will never be another Phil Collins!! As some have said, he was the drummer for Genesis when Peter Gabriel was lead singer. Then when he went solo Phil took over the lead vocals and the rest is history. Peter leaving the band was a huge favour to all of us because I dread go think what the world would be like if Phil didn't have the chance to shine. When the drums hit in this song its breathtaking, the power of his drum skills and vocals are a match made in Heaven!

He really has no idea what this song is about. There have been many urban legends and rumors made up about the meaning. But, in his words he had just broke up with his wife. He was alone in his home feeling low, and it came to him. Needless to say, his ex - wife hates this song. LOL. Collins has been plagued by a number of health issues over the last 10 years, beginning with an injured vertebrae in his upper neck in 2009. He sustained the injury while he was performing and it left him with crippling nerve damage in his hands. He underwent surgery to repair the vertebrae, but he lost feeling in his fingers and could only grip drumsticks if they were taped to his hands. The injury soon left him unable to continue playing the drums that made him a star.

I think the dimly lit, blue lighted, mysterious intro was a representation of there being "something in the air." Watch it again with that in mind. You'll find that you can replace that feeling of "what is that" or "what's going on" with "there's something in the air... I can feel it."

He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is in his 70's now. His son was on the Domino tour with Genesis recently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).

Phil is a talented man, he got a toy drumkit when was aged 5 and was encouraged with better and better kits as he got older. He attended a drama school and got the part of The Artful Dodger in a West End production of 'Oliver'. He also learnt piano by ear from his aunt, but never learnt to read music. It clearly never held him back though. His early love of music was The Beatles and soul music. He became famous as the drummer for prog band Genesis, fronted by Peter Gabriel. When Peter left the band they auditioned many singers without finding a suitable replacement. Phil voice was uncannily similar to Peter's by accident or design, so he was reluctantly persuaded to become the frontman. 'In the air tonight' was written during the turbulent divorce from his first marriage, and it was on his first solo album, which he wrote during a break from his Genesis commitments. He has been reluctant to discuss the song's lyrics, except to debunk silly theories that were spread about it being about him witnessing a drowning, a case of people taking lyrics much too literally without knowing any background information. It is clearly aimed at his wife and their interior decorator who was having an affair with her whilst Phil was away on long tours. When Phil performed the song on the BBC's chart show 'Top of the pops', instead of a keyboard stand, with a bitter sense of humour he used a folding workbench with a big pot of paint sat on one end of it. At the time only those involved would have understood the relevance. The album cover had a very cropped closeup of Phil's face, and after becoming a massive hit and going straight to No.1, the image was ubiquitous on posters, in record shops and in thousands of homes, his wife could not have avoided seeing his accusing eyes staring back at her everywhere she went.

An outstanding mudician and writer. Peter Gabriel left Genesis it created a hole which Phil Collins stepped up to the plate and filled. An interesting point Mile Rutherford and Tony Banks were both educated at private schools and came from wealthy backgrounds. Phil went to a state school and came from a far more humble background but as can be seen from his work was just as passionate. He started out I do believe with a band called Genesis, I was blast when I was younger to see them at winter land in San Francisco He was the drummer. He does a lot of composing, and he is an all-around performer and artist. He’s a very high tech kind of a guy, and he originally is a Drummer, and then he broke away from the band Genesis on his own, but he will be highly missed when it comes down to his performances. This was his farewell tour of performing in front of large audiences on the song itself if you re-search it out because a lot of people have their own interpretations, but it was about his divorce and once you understand that then you can understand why the intensity and the emotions that you might feel throughout this performance just an FYI glad that you enjoyed the concert🤠

This is my second comment. There is a clip on KZbin where Phil was in the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon 6 years ago. Jimmy asked him what inspired the song. Phil said the song was written partly out of anger from his divorce. He eluded to a sadness stage where he tried to reconcile, and then an anger stage. The song was first released in 1981. Then, later, he would meet Lily’s mom, and marry her. This live version came out in the 2000s. I think it was 2003. By the way, you paused it and talked about it in the perfect spot.

Great reaction to genius. Just as with Genesis (his 'other' band), things are so well done and thought out, very intentional. Phil Collins sure does know his stuff. Dramatic, intense, surprising shows he knows what he is doing. Well, after all he studied drama through 'high school' (or the English equivalent). His acting is quite good. Besides emoting emotion in his concerts, he can emote on screen. Check out his 'Phil the Shill' on Miami Vice (Season 2 Episode 12) and also 'Buster' (1988), a full length movie starring along with Dame Julie Walters. Such a confident talent!

Great reaction ladies - thanks! Oh - the wise bass player with all the hair and long beard is Lee Sklar. He's played on over 2000 albums with everyone from James Taylor to Toto to Linda Ronstadt and has a KZbin channel - very wise man indeed. And funny. 🙂

This song is famous in one other way, Phil Collins and 2 other men joined together with Eric Clapton after he got off drugs in a sort of celebration concert. In the evening they did Clapton music with songs from the other 2 men, however the finale of the concert is "In The Air Tonight" with Clapton on lead guitar. Luckily the performance was recorded on dvd.

I would call it explosive,when the drums start...very dramatic video,very dramatic performance by Phil Collins..it must have been quite a momen there both for Phil Collins and to the audience...the lights,the darkness too,added to the entire experience of being there for sure...I can totally understand that they audience became this involved,emotionally as wel,as well as you two Generation Gap reactors...
