So often on You Tube guitar tutorials the presenters get the talking bit wrong, pointing out very s-l-o-w-l-y what we can already see them doing. This is so refreshing: an excellent introduction for the intermediate or advanced player The commentary and the playing are equally informative, equally eloquent. And he's a dude. Great job.

Thanks for the helpful hints. When I first heard Davey Graham playing the traditional Irish tune - 'She moved through the Fair' - which was the first tune/song ever recorded in dadgad - I knew I had to learn this tuning which he introduced to the music World. It's a pity that other musicians who later borrowed this tuning - got all the kudos whilst Davey himself was more or less forgotten. Your lesson here is of great help and appreciate your uploading. 'Cheers'.

Came in here from a "Kashmir" tutorial. Was a pleasure to listen to your "flight around the chimney" (if I may call it so). I love celtic sounds. You got it man to bring up this mood. Great inspiration! And you made me smile at 3:12. I think it would be fun to have a beer with you. Or two per haps... ;-) And at least - I like your voice. You could be a narrator or a voice actor or a speaker for an audio book. Or a singer!!! Are you to hear as a singer somewhere in the web? I'm sure you're a wonderful singer. Cheers from Berlin! PS: Found you singing...Just like I said...

Hi Phil - I'm a lifelong fan of Phil Keaggy and a new fan and student of yours. What got my immediate attention in this amazing video was your approach to concept - natural. This is the guitar video I've been looking for, but didn't know it existed. Just got into it a couple days ago, and the guitar will show you. DADGAD is me, why has it taken me 50 years to find out, but I found out. I've always had this weird style, and went through a very pleasurable period of learning in open D/slide, and this feels like a melding of standard of standard and open tuning. I don't know that I'l ever tune my guitar back, or maybe not for a long time...

Weird. I had my acoustic in my hands, just tuned from D to DADGAD, and found the scale mentioned here, and then no sooner than I strummed a chord the Mr. Hare says "Don't strum it!" That aside, a nice intro to the concept of getting the most out of DADGAD. Informative vid. Thanks for posting it.
@hanneskvaran35668 жыл бұрын
Love the way you play, but as someone else pointed out, don't sell DADGAD short with the "don't strum." I'm not much of a finger picker but I love the tuning as a rhythm guitar, both as a solo and in an electric band It has such great full chords, with all the suspensions effortlessly creeping in. And it's a great lead instrument even with a pick.
@gortagnan10 жыл бұрын
Wish i could 'mess around' like that, and it also made me laugh/chuckle, and- you are not allowed a break while We (or some of us) hang on yer every word an sound ! Hiya. I listen to virtually everything and try to leave no stone unturned. My main aim is to promote acoustic music, free of artifice and electronic trickery. I suppose my favourite artists are Steely Dan (Acoustic? LOL), John Martyn, Richard Thompson, Joni Mitchell, Leon Rosselson etc and, if pushed, I probably listen to more jazz than anything else.

@philhare when i play in altered tunings i often tie a small piece of string around the guitar strings so that the notes i play ring more openly than the open stings adding to the depth while strumming.
@philhare12 жыл бұрын
Great stuff mate! The reason I said 'don't strum it' really was to try and encourage people to use the open-strings to gain greater sonic 'output' from the voicings. Fingerstyle playing is better for this, whereas 'block-strumming' (not what you were doing per se) tends to mask this option. Also, I'd had about 6 glasses of wine when I did that vid!

Some interesting comments and nice playing - the only I don't agree with is when Phil says 'don't strum it' - personally I think it sounds fine when this tuning is strummed - listen to some old recordings of Richard Thompson or Dick Gaughin - they certainly got some nice sounds strumming DADGAD (as well as finger picking of course!)

Hi Andy, In my opinion, the best tuning for slide blues is open G: DGDGBD. Conversely, any chordal tuning will work well eg. DADFsharpAD, CGCGCE, EACsharpEAE etc. all the best mate.

agreed and greetings from arkansas! i myself tend to prefer a variant of this tuning that, pre-dates the guitar back to the 14th century first said to be played on the ketari. DADDAD. you lose alot because the two middle strings are tuned the same, but it does make a certain "fullness" to certain harmonys, and although i do agree about picking instead of strumming, in this particular tuning i think there are certain "middle grounds". ill post a video, check it out. masterful playing by the way..

I play quite a few trad sessions Gus, but it's all in standard tuning as I love the 'swing' that I first heard being vamped to Shetland reels - all sorts of jazzy chords. Loads of these young scamps have stolen my initial thunder and made much more out of it than me. Good luck to 'em! I still think DADGAD is a fingerpickers tuning. All da best.

Hiya. Simply think that you have four frets to four fingers. When you run out of space, if you like, then move to that next position of four fingers, four frets. It won't always be like that, but it's a good thing to bear in mind. All the best. Phil

I would so love to see you play in a decent trad session, strumming does take from the harp-like and other possibilities of the guitar in a session eapecially with the added bass opportunities. Usually a guitar player strumms and drowns out the harp/dulcimer but this is a key to some tantilising possibilities, cheers big ears :-)
@philhare12 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure that Graham 'invented' the tuning, but I think there is enough evidence to suggest that he brought it to the attention of his Soho/London contemporaries in the 1960's eg Jansch, Renbourn , Carthy, Roy Harper etc. We will probably find that it was stumbled upon by an an amateur lautist from Suffolk! Like most tunings it is a wonder upon discovery, but it is ultimately self-defeating and perhaps 'samey'. I tend to use standard tuning mostly, as it offers the greater options.
