"Phil Keaggy AMAZING guitar solo!" Yeah, but when has Phil Keaggy ever not played an amazing guitar solo? Not many people know he's missing half of his middle finger on his right hand, and he's _still_ a brilliant guitarist. He could easily stand shoulder to shoulder with the greats like Clapton, Gilmour, and Satriani, but he's incredibly humble and just happy to do his own thing without seeking worldwide fame and fortune.

I read somewhere that Jimmy Hendricks was asked "What's it like to be the worlds best guitarist?" in an interview on the radio. Hendricks replied something to the effect of "I don't know, ask Phil Keaggy". I have been a fan of his guitar playing since the 1970s, and I don't listen to the Christian music scene (nothing wrong with it, it's just that I'm not Christian). "Six String Conspiracy" was the first of his records in my collection. I have around 6 of his early vinyl LPs, and a pile of CDs, but I've not listened to any of them since around 2005 when I last moved. I really need to get a new receiver so I can listen to them again.

I saw him a few years ago at a very small concert. After the show, he came out into the audience area. No one went over to him so my wife and I did. I just intended to introduce ourselves and thank him for years of musical enjoyment. But he was so open and gracious we ended up chatting for about 20 minutes. Such a warm, humble, kind man. I saw Phil LIVE back in 1977 with John Michael Talbot (with long hair and a beard!). 1000 seats only! Phil's band came out and played 10-15 songs. The crowd was upper eschelon "know-it all/seen-it-all's" from all over the USA and 12 other countries....they were used to the very best - they were "snobby", to be honest. I saw Phil (being a lead guitar player myself) do and play things I never thought possible - unless I'd personally seen him do it myself! In this video, near the beginning, he plays leads where he uses his little finger on his right hand (and he's missing his middle finger!), and places it on the volume knob of his Gibson Les Paul guitar, and the volume is off - as he picks downward - while holding his little finger on the knob, he turns the volume up with the downward motion of his little finger - while he holds the guitar pick with the same hand - using his thumb and index finger - plucking the strings! On the upstroke of the guiitar pick, he turns the volume knob back to the off position! He does it so fast that the guitar sounds like an organ or makes whale-type sounds! You can see him do it on this video! No other famous guitar player does this, nor have I ever seen anyone do it anywhere in 35 years or before! Watch him closely! That's just one of his "tricks"! He has hundreds or more! Anyway, when I,( and the only 999 other people who got the privilege of seeing Phil Keaggy and his whole band) watched them all, the this "snobby crowd" gave him "standing ovations" after every song! AFTER EVERY SINGLE SONG! He did 2 encores! That's 14+ Standing ovations from "snooty know-it-all snobs"!!!!! I've never seen such "snobs" so impressed with anyone - nor have I have ever seen the like since! I mean these people would snub at the Boston Symphony orchestra, Led Zeppelin, (whoever!) if they weren't perfect in every way! I guess you had to be there! That concert was worth $5000.00 for every single ticket, in my opinion, and I got to see him and Mr. Talbot for $10! I can't can't believe that! Incredible! Lastly, I recently saw Phil Keaggy interviewed by Pat Robertson on the 700 Club Christan network show. Phil told Pat that many people say to him, "Phil, you could have been so great, if you only hadNOTt been a Christian!" Phil looked at Pat when he told him this....with an expression of "Why are these people saying this? Don't they get it? If it wasn't for Jesus Christ, I wouldn't be able to play anything like I do play!" I thought what Phil said to Pat, along with his expression and words that followed, made his point very well! A friend of mine, who was guitarist for Air Supply (love song specialists of the late 70s early 80s) played in the support band at a Phil Keaggy concert in Sydney (late 80s). At the interval after Phil's first set I saw my guitarist friend in the foyer, carrying his beloved strat. I went over and said, 'Hi - what did you think of Phil's set?" My friend smiled and shook his head in disbelief, then put his strat in the bin and walked away. Oh how we laughed ... (He went back and got it, but it was a great gag ...)

docrocker7 Truthfully, I don't recall noticing anything unusual about Phil's fingers when we parted. What I DO recall, however, was a bass player from my home town, named Jim Thompson. (Funny that thinking of the story has brought his name to my mind, since I was trying to remember it recently, and I couldn't.) He came over to the house I shared with my brother and mother, one night, to jam with me and another musician. As Jim left, he said, "You know, people have told me I should have played piano, because I have SIX FINGERS on each hand. As I digested that weird information --- which I'd never even noticed before --- he shook my hand goodnight. Sure enough, he had an unusually broad grip. Needless to say, I got a better look at his hands the next time I saw him. I'm guessing that six fingers per hand wouldn't have helped him much, if at all, when playing piano. The number of fingers is less important than the distance that one can stretch from one finger to the next one. With more fingers, he actually might have had a harder time stretching them.

I met Phil in Hayward Calif. 13years ago. It was a worship leaders seminar of sorts. He’s just a normal guy when you talk to him with highly unusual talents. I would say he’s the best guitarist on the planet!

I saw him at a church concert in Rochester NY years ago. He was performing solo and was awesome! He runs delay and loops his riffs then plays over them to sound like multi guitars. Cool stuff.

@DAYSLEEPERWIL You are absolutely correct. i have enjoyed Phil for many years and this is a great example of a someone blessed with the gift of music and a creative mind. There are all kinds of forums and forms of media we can use to witness to others. Perhaps it would be better to keep the subject matter in context with the forum it is presented in.

He's amazing- Yes, he quotes riffs from songs he wrote long ago, but always a new fresh interpretation- you'll never hear the same song the same way twice. He has real mastery- over his instrument and his music.

I was in my early 20's when I first heard Phil Keaggy! He has to be the most humble guitar player alive! Jimi Hendrix said he was #1! GOD confirms it each time my brother plays!♥GOD bless him much! His Birthday is March 23rd! Happy Birthday Phil! ☆★☆ Shine Bright for the King!!! I ♥ his voice!!!

The man's a legend. He's got a very distinctive almost Baroque style to his playing. I think I prefer his acoustic stuff on balance though. He's seriously underrated though.

Back when it was in print, I found a 7-song CD with oddities from the Crimson and Blue sessions, and it had a killer version of "John the Revelator" with Phil playing a Stratocaster, plus the almost 13-minute "The Further Adventures of . . . ." Between those two songs Keaggy gets silly with a brief story song with the lyrics "he had a dream about a hand, I think it was the thing in the Addams famly . . . my breakfast is getting cold . . . yabba dabba do, yabba dabba do." I could listen to those two songs back to back repeatedly through any length of road trip. It is amazing listening to a gifted musician glorify God with his God-given ability!

Phil is a truly remarkable and amazing musician whom is also very humble. Nevertheless, it is highly unfortunate that some people of faith keep trying to use him as their "sword". Please stop. It's embarrassing and not doing him any favors. Just appreciate his great talent. There are a lot of super talented musicians out there. It should not be seen a competition. It's music! Peace.

@garywingrove There are several stories you can take at deeper value and see a larger message. That's what's good about that book. I have several friends with no direction in life and that book gave them purpose. I love that part of the Bible. It's all the other tools left inside to scare people that I worry about. We are all fine and dandy when the lights are on, but if we get hit with a global catastrophe (Like a meteor) I guarantee out will come the torches and pitch forks.

@garywingrove The difference in a Gun and religion is that the gun does not come with instructions telling you who to use it on. Religion does. In order to do gods work you must force your beliefs on others. How many atheists have knocked on your door trying to convert you? How many religious people have? that answers itself. I am one to be inspired by Love. Not fear and Hope. The key to me is acceptance....Not conversion. EQUALITY..Not Favoritism. Passion...Not Fear.
@BrianAuer
@BrianAuer 12 жыл бұрын
@tbiler I do. It's called playing music, and I get very irritated when religion suppresses my life's inspiration. If the world believed 2 plus 2 equals 7 you would be irritated when they treated you like a fool for not believing it. As far as atheism goes, that term only exists because of the god idea which I don't subscribe to. But hey, I'm open for anything..as long as there is a logical reason for believing in it. Fear and hope do not compute as logic to me. More like fantasy.
