I actually like this version better. I find his acoustic versions to be more raw, powerful, and lyrical. In the studio he tended to over produce. My humble opinion.

I have one question to ask because I was a young boy at the height of Phil Ochs and I grew up with his powerful words...but here's the question,Why in the hell was Bob Dylan so fucking regarded and guys like Phil Ochs do under the wire?... I mean did u ever try to understand a Dylan song...Fuck no...but Phil Ochs just tells u his point which is reality to me.Maybe there is something to the point when Dylan said he sold himself to a higher power but it is what it is and true talent is always on the back burner be great fun for INDEPENDANT music.
@Elayman14 жыл бұрын
The lack of fame or fortune and major hit records had more to do with being blacklisted from radio due to his political beliefs than anything Dylan could effect. Their relationship was quite interesting though....and would have been more so had Phil been an imminent threat like Springsteen and others a few years later.

Snappy guitar. Great song. Phil was a masterful songwriter and his melodies were so good .. so much better than most folk singers. Is it OK for a moderate to post here?
@JaneFrieman6 жыл бұрын
I do agree that Phil's guitar playing was rather "snappy". He had a talent for playing that instrument. His words were outspoken and focused on the injustices of the nation with a seasoning of global conflict. Unfortunately Phil felt inwardly conflicted which forced his demise. R.I.P Phil. Many say that we wish you were still here to help us stand up to the current oligarchy ruling this nation.

Joseph Pelava Pleasures of the Harbor was a collection of beautiful songs in which 3/4 of those songs were made poorer by terrible instrumentals and over-wrought arrangements. This is especially true of the title track and Crucifixion, which explains why superior live versions of both were chosen for the Chords of Fame double album compilation that was released shortly after he died. Tape From California was similar but not as extreme. The studio version of this song, from Rehearsals for Retirement, is excellent and I prefer it to this live performance. But both are good.

I'm reluctant to you the word authentic at all because of how abused it tends to be, but Phil ochs always sounded so genuine when he sang. Singers who lean to far into the emotions in lyrics, like they need you to know how artistic they are, always feels so fake. Phil Ochs didn't sing like that.
