The fact that he's so accomplished, but still cant name all the notes on the fretboard made me laugh, warmed my heart, and greatly encouraged me. :)

I was desiring to learn the key of b just to learn phil wickham songs. I wanted to get into worship on guitar more and saw an interview where he plays in this key a lot with down tune live. I have even been playing all week with a down tuned guitar having fun, lol. I am a novice campfire guitarist and love worship. This video was a real answer to prayer. Praise God. It was really neat seeing him teach it himself. 🌈🕊🐑

Just in case y'all wondering, That 3 over 1 chord is a Ebmajor7(no3), that's in half step down tuning, the two chords he plays on G Sharp is that Gmb6 the one you hold down the top string with your thumb,an then Dmb9(#5) chord is the one you mute the top string

Is super cool to learn that a professional guitarist leaves their guitar tuned down a half or whole step all the time. I’ve thought of doing that, but wasn’t confident in leaving it like that. Do you use a larger gauge of strings to accommodate the lessened tension?

Does anyone know why he tunes a half or full step down? Is it because it’s easier for him to sing in that key?
@thunderup8234 жыл бұрын
There are a few reasons, but I believe Phil does it so there's less string tension thus making it easier for him to play all these chords he likes to mess with in most of his songs. Especially with Phil being a very percussive acoustic player, tuning up or down a half step really changes the feel/sound of heavy strumming.

key of B (with 5 sharps) is tough for keyboard/piano players. not sure it's a great idea. of course most praise teams keyboard players only chord. key of E is hard enough for them. haha therefore, not many hymns were written in these keys. not too many guitar players back then ... just a thought.
