This super rare little 'Sparkling Burgundy' Melody Maker lll weighs just 6.40 lbs. and has a nut width of just over 1 9/16 inches and a standard Gibson scale length of 24 3/4 inches. Solid mahogany body, one-piece mahogany neck with a medium profile. Rosewood fretboard with 22 jumbo frets and inlaid pearl dot position markers. Headstock with gold silk-screened "Gibson" logo. Closed-back dual-line Kluson Deluxe strip tuners with white plastic oval buttons. Serial number "940025" stamped on the back of the headstock. Three hot Melody Maker pickups (white plastic-covered single-coil pickups without adjustable poles) with outputs of 7.01k, 7.11k and 7.04k. Single-layer white plastic pickguard with Gibson logo engraved in black and ten screws. Four controls (two volume, two tone) on lower treble bout plus three-way sliding pickup selector switch mounted on pickguard. Black plastic ribbed-side conical-shape "Witch Hat" control knobs with metal tops. The potentiometers are stamped: "137 6737" (CTS, September 1967). Stud wrap-around bridge/tailpiece with pre-set intonation and Maestro vibrato tailpiece with 'Walrus-tooth' plastic tip. The Sparkling Burgundy finish on the top has slightly faded to a 'Golden Burgundy' and there is some light finish checking. There is a tiny crack in the plastic pickguard near the bass horn and there is a tiny 'sliver' of wood chipped away from the top of the back of the headstock. With all that said this Melody Maker lll is in exceptionally fine (9.00) condition - and certainly the best example of this rare color on a MM lll that we have ever seen. Housed in the original three-latch, shaped black softshell case with red felt lining (9.25).

Even the cheap ass budget guitars were better in the 60s. These were Gibson's student line and they were every bit as capable as their standard models.

I have a cheap Epi SG Special, I made the humbuckers splittable, it has some kind of maple body (I guess) and a bolt on neck.. It sounds more strattier than strat itself.

Tabs are helpful when used correctly (this means, you use them to check out the correct fingerings, but you still use your ears to listen to all of the small nuances in the original version), but a lot of people close their ears when they use tabs and end up learning these "half-assed" versions of the songs. The notes are correct, but it lacks all of the stuff that made the original riff sound so cool.

I never had to intonate my 1970 Melody Maker SG and It always tuned extremely well but I stupidly sold it and bought another one except it was a 1969 and it would not intonate. It would be in tune in one chord and be out of tune in another. Non of the guitar techs could intonate or fix it. I'm going to buy another one hoping I get one that will intonate. If I get one that has problems tuning how do you intonate them? Does anyone know?

He is bound to be insured, all things considered, but it is clear that guitars are mean much more than income to David Brass. That is why I cannot resent Fretted Americana, no matter how distant my finances are from their purchasing requirements. Also, Phil X.

What I just love about Tabs on the net is the way these guys transcribe songs into THE most difficult way to play it. Absolute bitch chords you need to dislocate digits to play. And then you watch a vid of the original artist and he's playing all bar chords, just like you suspected!

This guy does look and sound just like Sammy Hagar. I think Phil X is just another name Sammy uses when he does these things. I have one of these except it was the single pickup model. I say was because I bought it in '73 and two years later I thought the pickup sucked and I put two Guild humbuckers in it. I'm thinking about taking them out and putting them on Ebay. Don't want to sell the Melody Maker but the Guilds ain't original anyway and their '75 models, might make a couple dollars. Social security ain't paying the bills.
