This is Modesto Ash. I've turned it before and really enjoyed it. This piece took me a long time trying to figure out what to do with it but once I got it mounted on the lathe, it all came together. One of my favorite pieces and I hope you feel the same way. Finished in shellac.

Totally stunning piece, Phil, this particular piece of wood had your name on it, long before you ever signed it, thanks to Tuffy Marginez. It is surely one of your best pieces yet, worth waiting in storage and contemplation for 3 years to find its final glory, in your hands, of being a beautiful piece of art sculpture. I love it! Thank you so much, Phil, for sharing your beautiful gift in uniquely communicating with the nature of wood, for us all to enjoy. Take good care and have a great week.💛🫂☺️

This Saturday I'm going to look at a lathe a friend has. He said I could use it. I haven't turned anything in almost 50 years, but have been watching your videos and am inspired to try again. I was the same way. Before I picked up the hobby, I watched just about every video that Phil had posted. But a good friend that turns kept bugging me and I just happen to run across a good deal on a lathe. After the first piece the addiction was there. Couldn't wait to to finish so I could start another. Lol. I'm at the point now, where I will start another one while one is still in the chuck drying. That's how bad I can't wait to start another one. Love seeing those ribbons flying.

No doubt about it Phil I love that bowl. There is so much life left in it even after turning what you did. And that just added to it by showing all that beautiful grain. The hot glue held up great and for sure it has a place in my turning. As always great vision in seeing what is hidden in the piece. I just finished one I have to call The I Don't Know Bowl. I sure was not sure what I was going to get. But it does have some very nice bark and lots of holes. Great work my friend, Gary

Thank You Phil...What FUN! Phil I remember now. That was the secondary side piece from the very first piece I ever sent you over 3 years ago, WOW!. Secondary because of the hole. Gee, I do not remember doing that center circle thing, that balancing ring at all. Modesto Ash is correct. I identified the wood with my local nursery lady. That stump was along the road for a looong time until I came along. You did it justice and made a wonderful piece from wood that probably would have been passed over by other turners. GREAT WORK PHIL, until next time....TM

Another awesome piece there Phil. Love watching your videos to see what you will bring alive and to hear what you have to say. I watch and listen to the whole video , with you stopping and talking makes it more interesting. Some videos on KZbin I start watching to see what the piece of wood looks like and then fast forward to the end to see what it turned out like. With them not talking or explaining what they are doing it’s not as interesting as your videos. Thanks again Phil for teaching me many tips and trips in wood turning, also teaching me to look at pieces of wood that I wouldn’t look at for turning but makes such beautiful pieces. From your student Todd in Newfoundland keep doing what you love for us to enjoy and learn. 👍

Excellent results in filling that void, Phil. A lovely, interesting, impressive piece. I want to say imposing, but not in a bad way. The bark did come alive with finish. I'm still not ready to trust hot glue. Not because it doesn't work well when done right. But because I don't think I'd be fast enough to get the pieces together while it's still hot enough. Regarding temperature and hot glue, I learned a lesson. One of my first projects was a shifter knob for my vehicle, the nut inside secured with hot glue. The thing was great, until it spent a night outside at -30. The nut came loose and I had a ridiculous time getting it unthreaded, so I could put the original back on. From that lesson, I've learned that a few minutes in the freezer, or outside in winter, can let that hot glue peel right off. An alternative if getting isopropyl on your bowl isn't the best option. Great video, Phil.

I grew up in Modesto California. Those are amazing trees. The wood is beautiful, the tree grows quite large, and provides a ton of shade during the spring and Summer. Leaving the shape of that log was the right choice. Filling in that hole is also the right choice. That is one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever seen you turn. Nice hard wood isn't it? I've never varnished Modesto Ash. I'm amazed at how much grain there really is. Good job, and thank you.
