I think when you pick up a silver sky.. It doesn't really feel like it wants to be played tough like that. As weird as that sounds lol. Its like a hi-fi strat.. Rather than the vintage vibe strats give off.

in terms of his general gear, justin you’re pretty much spot on. he pretty much only uses his vintage strats. not known for custom shops, but a fender guy for sure. at the festival, he said “those PRS guys know what’s up. and John Mayer, i think he knows a little something too.” so he definitely likes it !

I love how Sayce has been embracing more modern stuff, with him being featured on both Tone King and Rabea Neural DSP plugins and using the silver sky here. It really proves that much of his tone is found in his massive, soulful attack. It's in the hands man. I love watching him play completely unplugged too you can really hear how his technique facilitates aspects of his tone like sustain that many people might understandably attribute to his rig. Would love to see him rock one of those new super-thin nitro-finished prs silver skys. Maybe a white one with a maple fretboard for the Hendrix vibe and just really really tear it up. I love this man he's an absolute beast!

Philip is without a doubt a blues guitar legend. I’ve seen him live and up close many times and he never disappoints. There’s really nobody else I know of that plays with the same aggressiveness and raw power that he does. There’s very few that put their whole heart and soul into their playing the way Philip Sayce can.

I have an onyx one and asked the PRS customerservice last year what kind of finish I have with my serial number. They said it isn't nitro. But the finish has some wear, some cracks, not heavily but still. All my other guitars are poly. My Reverend Manta Ray is now 5 years old and that polyfinish, apart from some minor scratches is still pristine, unlike my PRS. If I recall it correctly the service rep wrote that my finish is acrylic...so yeah. Then again, I have one spot where some liquid hit the lacquer and it turned the finish milky, which is supposed to happen with nitro, right?

@Justin can you help me clarify something, I have an Onyx SS as well from 2018 but mine has the silver painted scoop, I've seen some that is not like that like the one Philip is playing. When did they stopped doing that and why? Also regarding the finish, yes it is poly but it is not in the bullpark with a Fender poly when it comes down to the feel. It's not sticky and thick plastic feeling at all, it is a really good quality thin poly that can still be dinged and worn unlike the Fender poly. Of course it is still much more durable than any nitro finish. I really like it and it suites the guitar's modern, immaculate vibe.

Thanks for honoring my request HAHAHA Edit: I wonder what kind of mods he's made to the SS. I believe he uses .11s, and I'm sure he prefers jumbo frets and a much higher action than John might.
@3rdtonefromthesun Жыл бұрын
He usually plays 11s but does go low as a 9 depending on how beat up his fingers and tendons are. But the top wound strings tend to stay pretty heavy with the low E being 54 gauge.

Wonder if he mounted a treble bleed on the volume pot…Sayce likes to change the level of dirt with it and it doesn’t affect the treble lose then
@spatnaspolecnost Жыл бұрын
Considering he uses fuzzes I doubt it, I had treble bleed on my strat and had to take it out cause it just didn't sound good on anything lower than 7-8 when fuzz was engaged. Way too thin and bright. I bet the treble with volume down comes from a fuzz.

@@spatnaspolecnost try one of those variable treble bleeds. It can be difficult to get the right resistor value to find that sweet spot where it will sound good with a fuzz face.
