It happens everywhere where there's massive renovations but I used to work in one of the new destination places. They wanted new clientele real quick. The usual customers were of course the locals but most weren't rich and dressed super casual. The restaurant had expensive menu items (ingredients were a bit on the expensive side but didn't justify the price) because their goal was to bring in rich people/higher class so the area would be the destination place for entertainment. If TS cancelled her shows there, it’s not going to benefit the workers. Guarantee the hotels would deny refunds for those rooms because of ‘short notice’ or something along those lines. So then you’d have concertgoers out tons of money they spent to attend a cancelled show. It’s not really fair to put that on TS and have everyone make her out to be the bad guy if she doesn’t cancel.
@Quarktehduck Жыл бұрын
It would literally be making *more* money for the hotels because they’re going to keep the deposits on those rooms and either won’t have to service them (so less labor and supplies) or they will be rebooked and they will get paid twice for one room.
@elanorelle1379 Жыл бұрын
It feels like a publicity stunt on the politicians side. They know asking Taylor will get them the most press. The protest has been since early July. They haven’t asked other artists to cancel through July (multiple artists/weekends would have a bigger effect over one weekend. Especially if cancelled with enough time to keep hotels from keeping the money). They’re not asking the Chargers and Rams to cancel their games next weekend. They haven’t asked Metallica to cancel in two weeks. If She canceled now, the hotels will keep all their money because of non refundables, deposits, etc. And get to rebook rooms making them twice the amount they would have. The only ones this would affect are the workers at businesses other then the hotels, concertgoers who will loose their money, transport workers, and sofi employees. I support unions, but this is a nonstarter

@@elanorelle1379 They've been on strike since early July?? And they wait until AUGUST 1st to write a letter demanding she canceled her shows that are on Aug 3-9??? Lmao sure let's just cancel these huge shows literally 2 days before they're supposed to happen. I'm gonna add onto your list all the local crew and staff that were brought in to put on the show. All the wasted fuel and gas transporting all the equipment, lights, screens, sound systems, wardrobe, set pieces, stage from the previous stop to LA; all the wasted time and energy gone into /building/ all of that inside Sofi cause it's definitely already set up by now and they've most likely been doing tech rehearsals through the weekend already. And all the fans coming to LA from other places... As someone who has to fly to LA for concerts to see my favorite artist because it's my only option- I literally save up all year long, to be able to afford not just the tickets, but the cost of the hotel, the round trip flight, taxi/rideshare to get around the city, food for 2-4 days. Honestly the tickets are the least expensive part of the whole thing. To have the shows cancelled literally 1-2 days before they start??? The hotel must likely wouldn't be refundable, the airfare sure as hell won't be. Hell there'd be a good chance I'd ALREADY be in my hotel in LA if I was going to the first or second night of the shows. So then I'd be stuck in LA, utterly heartbroken because the concerts I'd been looking forward to all year were cancelled. And anyway besides all of that, you're right. It's absolutely a publicity stunt and they KNOW Taylor can't cancel. Even if she wanted to. There's so many contracts involved with sponsors, promoters, the city itself, security teams, local staff and crew. She'd be in violation and breaking all those contracts. The politicians know that. So they get to virtue signal about caring about the hotel workers and then turn around and say it's all Taylor's fault and she doesn't care. There's also the inherent misogyny because like you said... they're not asking for the football game or Metallica to cancel. But the artist with a predominantly young, female fanbase? Yeah. The politicians don't actually care about hotel works.

as someone who has been studying biology in university, I have become very familiar with the story of Henrietta Lacks and honestly did a double take when I heard her name mentioned in the episode. Her cells (called HeLa cells) have been used to do so much good, revolutionary research but we can not ignore that it all is founded upon breaking a pillar of biological and medical research ethics, informed consent. I really hope one day we see international change where a portion of all HeLa cell sales goes to her family and their foundation
@BoringTroublemaker Жыл бұрын
While I agree that the informed consent was violated, I think that compensating the family for the use of the sample is crossing a number of ethical boundaries and setting a very dangerous precedent. Will we then need to start compensating families to get them to donate bodies of their loved ones to teaching or research hospitals? What about organ donations? Stem cells? I think the tendency to wrap emotion in the story is clouding the long term consequences here.
@scientifically_sarah Жыл бұрын
@@BoringTroublemaker I think the main difference is the policies in place for organ and cadaver donation. The deceased needs to have expressed those wishes (in Canada we sign up for organ donation with our health card), and donating your body to science is actually a tedious process that many are rejected from. Also, the family always has the right to withdraw the deceased from cadaver lists, so there are multiple layers of consent and the family is also included in these decisions. Neither the patient or the family consented or was even aware in this very sad situation.
@BoringTroublemaker Жыл бұрын
@@scientifically_sarah a couple of things: 1. That is in no way relevant to financial compensation. 2. Those are not the rules in the US. Families are not entitled to override the decisions made by an individual regarding body or organ donation after their death. BECAUSE Families do not have ownership over their loved ones bodies and are not entitled to sell or otherwise receive payment for their bodies, organs, tissues, or anything else. Again, that is illegal and unethical.

Another interesting piece of information about the Henrietta Lacks story is that, the world initially didn't know that it was her cells that scientists were using. It was announced that the HeLa cells were from a woman named Helen Lane - in a strange move that was part anonmysation but possibly part racial erasure? In any case, this was at a time where medical law still hadn't grappled with the idea that a person's dead cells should fall under that living person's autonomy, which is why her cells were dealt with that way.
@swiper-no-swiping Жыл бұрын
Technically, they aren't dead cells -- they're astounding because they're alive. In a way, if you philosophize that the body must die for a person to be dead, Henrietta Lacks might "live" for the rest of humanity's existence.
@SkunkApe407 Жыл бұрын
@@swiper-no-swipingthe legal definition of "alive" requires brain activity, a heartbeat,and respiration. The HeLa cells exhibit none of those traits. The cells may be alive, but that does not constitute life. Big difference.

A lot of people are asking how Lizzo can be so hypocritical but to me it seems like she reached a point with herself where because she's happy with her own body and sexuality and how she expresses it, she attaches that to some idea of an enlightened position and thus expects everyone else to be exactly like her and either doesn't understand or doesn't care when people aren't comfortable with the same things.

I think perhaps a compromise for Taylor would be donating to the unions for that cause but still doing her tour cuz that's a sticky situation for her to be in and I think that might be a good compromise.

For the Fitch Credit Rating, yes, our GDP is up 2.3% quarter over quarter for the last 3 quarters. Yes, we are at a near record low in unemployment. But, how many people are UNDER-employed? How many people are unhoused, homeless, living in a broken down van, both parents working 3 part time jobs because nobody is paying benefits or increasing wages but the cost of living is too high and they can't afford to feed their children who sleep in the back seats? You know what is at a near record, or actual record HIGH? Incarceration rates. The incarcerated aren't included in employment statistics. Everyone also knows that wealth distribution of that GDP increase is unevenly stacked heavily towards the top 1%.

Taylor Swift Canceling her shows in LA would be a epic fuck you to the people that are traveling to see her and to the employees of more then just the hotels that need the money her shows will bring in. I’m sorry but the politicians have had since November of last year to step up and do something. It’s not her or her fans fault these politicians and big businesses didn’t prepare. Something people should keep in mind with the LA rent story... Aside from the fact that all of this should have been seen MILES away by everyone, eviction isn't the end of it. Eviction doesn't eliminate the rent that is owed either. And you basically can not get any other place to live if you have an eviction on your record for SEVEN YEARS. So yes, there will be a spike in homelessness. Because there are going to be potentially thousands of people who owe amounts like $15,000 or more to landlords, who are going to have court dates scheduled which prevent them from leaving and trying to find a place to rent somewhere else or even going to stay with family elsewhere. They're going to be stuck in LA, with huge debt, that landlords will eventually get court orders on to seize their property by force (so if they had a car? Gone. If they had jewelry or anything else of value? Gone.) and then they'll have the court garnishing their wages for 15% for years to come in order to pay it back. If their employers had kept them employed during the pandemic despite them staying home, the thing those employers were given tons of money precisely to do (but which Republicans forced to not be legally required), none of this would be happening and everyone, including landlords, would be whole already.
@theshosher Жыл бұрын
if taylor swift were to cancel her concert this close to the actual date the hotels will cash millions in service without having to lift a finger. So many people will just not show up but be required to pay a massive fee. it would simply play into their cards.

Lizzo: 1. While not appropriate, it IS NOT illegal to take employees to a strip club, esp out of country. No one was forced to go. And I would NEVER go anywhere unless I knew where I was going. This part seems like a lot of people complaining for money or attention. 2. The part of dancers being made to keep trying out and that their job isn't secure is NOT new! Hell, Beyonce fired at least 2 people mid-concert. While it's not great, it's absolutely nothing new or shocking in the touring world. 3. It's a strip club and you went on stage...you're not 10 you know what CAN happen and you CAN say no. Sorry not sorry. Grow up. 4. Not all fat people are physically able to keep up with such rigorous and demanding dance schedules, esp on tour. I'm sure that's what the "fat shaming" is about. If you can't do your job, then you should be let go. I think more grace could be shown, but, once again, yall don't hate on Beyonce! The rest, well I can't speak on as I don't know and can't think of simple explanations to the accusations.

However, I have to say taking religion classes in school is as much more a cultural class as a faith one. The Taylor swift LA shows, she’s playing SIX shows, it’s the last on her tour and there’s expected to be huge announcements. I highly doubt she will cancel. If she did, what happens to the thousands if not millions of fans who got tickets to these shows? You can reimburse for the show tickets, but some people paid ‘-aftermarket’ prices of exorbitant amounts to get tickets and will likely not get refunds. What happens to those who have non refundable plane tickets or hotel rooms/airbnbs? Or people who took time off of work to do that and can’t get the time off for a future date? The way it would effect so many people not just because of the tickets is just making it not plausible. Taylor would be shit on forever if she cancelled all 6 shows, and if she doesn’t she gets shit on forever for not supporting the workers. It’s a no-win situation realistically.

Already calling it: Lizzo will give a half ass apology online. Then she will make a donation to a nonprofit or settle with anyone on the alleged complaint. Or both.
