As a Filipino, I’m glad with this agreement. Never had an issue in the past. My dad was a big supporter of US forces in the Philippines. Along with other relatives in agreement. Some of these relatives were officers of the Philippines Army during the 80s, 90s. Their sons joining the Philippine Armed Forces themselves. I know many Filipinos don’t agree with my opinion but it’s my opinion.

I agree with you. A lot of Filipinos don't like it though. They think we can ride it out with China, they are blind to the fact that China is already taking over our economy. There are hundreds of Chinese run companies here now and they are bank rolling politicians to suit their agendas. There are thousands of military aged chinese men in the country too which is concerning.

China loves Philippines like Xinjiang. The 1 child policy created 300 million angry single Chinese men getting nagged by their moms to get a Wife and kids. That's a lot of guys they have to keep happy. The other reason they need to expand to other countries is the 1 child policy reduced their Gene Pool. In 2 generations, they risk marrying their relatives because there are no single women in China. Not to mention that the women are super picky and spoiled due to being rare commodities. Plenty of oil, fish and women there for All you can Eat Buffet at Philippines and other countries. Philippines almost fell for the trap and become all Han Chinese like Xinjiang. China's landmass is larger in modern times than historical times. They doing a slow and steady expansion making sure they can hold all that land they take.

As a Filipino, I only want one thing; peace, not for me but for my family. I will fight tooth and nail for my country, but war only breeds suffering, not only for those who fight it but also for the civilians on both sides. And ironically, those who suffer the least are the leaders who send soldiers to war. I am proud of my country's warriors of the past, the warriors of today, and the warriors who are yet to be. That being said, I find it poetic and highly relevant that out of all the warriors the Filipino people could have chosen to be their National Hero, our nation collectively chose a scholar who desired nothing but equality, peace, and justice through peaceful means. May we all die old, having lived through peace in our time. Filipino, American, Chinese, or whatever your nation is; may we all live through peace in our time.

Semiam 1, English is a national language here, which means schools here start teaching it in first grade. So, like anything, it all depends on how well someone did in school, and how far they went. College kids can speak English as well as anyone. My daughter, a first grader, speaks 3 languages, at a first grade level, of course.

I am an American married to a Filipina for over 32 years. I met her while in the Navy in Subic Bay. I love the Philippines, we lived there for years and have condo in Manila and a house in Bataan Province. I am glad to see the resurrection of the closer relationship between the US and Philippines but want the Philippines to limit the bad interaction that having bases from happening again. Olongapo City, is in much better shape now than when the US Had Subic. There are more colleges than Bars now. And the people can enjoy their own city compared to what it was like when Olongapo was the wild west for the Americans.

Just a slight correction on 11:56 Spain was on the brink of losing to the Philippines at this point in history. Rather than suffer the humiliation of losing to the Filipinos, they instead decided to secede control of the Philippines to the USA during the Treaty of Paris where they asked for 20 million dollars. A fake battle was then performed between the US and Spain. This gave the US enough time to land their forces in the Philippines because the Filipinos were not sure if they were friend or foe just yet, with Generals like Antonio Luna wanting to prepare for war, and other politicians wanting to see if they could take advantage and trade with the US. The war then started after a Filipino soldier was shot.

I'm Filipino. Whether our government says we are allied with China or Russia, the people's hearts are with the west. I've never spoken with a Filipino who says they trust China or wants our govt to be closer to China. Only a few politicians do because they're interested in lining their own pockets. Even my barkadas(close friends) who are Filipino-Chinese have a disdain and distrust for the Chinese government. We wholeheartly support the USA and Philippines being closer together again. Whoever commented that USA is being aggressive by building it's military bases here do not understand that the difference is that we as a people actually support and allow the USA to build here, as opposed to China just plainly building islands on disputed territories. When I was in the military, I served with so many Filipinos. Hard work brothas I've ever worked with. My best friend I served with for 15 years, is Filipino. As an American, I think one of our foremost goals in regards to foreign policy should be to do what we can to strengthen our allies. That doesn't mean throw money at them, nor does it mean lord it over them by enforcing our idea of what is best onto them. It means looking objectively at their situation, seeing what we can do to help shore up their weak parts, and asking them if we can help, then helping them in whatever ways they allow. I understand the reasons why we treated the Philippines the way we did in the past, but we (and here I mean both the US and the Philippines) need to look at the *current* as well as the future situation: we can't change the past, but we can definitely prepare for the future. I think that since the end of the Cold War, America has done a better job in how it treats its allies, and have taken a more stable and less exploitive stance than we once did. Alliances are formed as much by trust as by political and economic necessity, so nurturing a good relationship is paramount in getting our allies willing to help us help them, which will ultimately help both parties, which is the whole point of becoming allies. If we can keep up this current stance (as I see it), I think US foreign relations will steadily improve overall, and particularly among areas that we view as especially important. The Philippines is, IMO, one such place of importance, and it's good to see that our relations appear to be improving there.

Well said. I know the US at times gets a reputation of being explotative. But we have a unique position on the world stage, we are powerful enough to act as a counter to China, Russia, Iran, hostile Middle East elements, Somalia pirates, and African Warlords. We have enough strength and influence to project our might across the world, I do support being LIKE a "global police" but where we build healthy mutually beneficial relations with neighbors, liek the groups I listed there will ALWAYS be some kind of hostile potential enemies to world peace. As we saw with Ukraine these countries are often run by authoritarian dictators or single parties which at anytiem could start a war. Especially right now with China tryign to lay claim to the ENTIRE South China Sea under false claims, it's proven fact the Chinese military is bullying others, whether aircraft making threats of "entering Chinese airspace" or navy ships harrassing and nearly ramming into other ships especially fishers. WHatever the SCS nations beefs with each other they have a bigger threat in China, simply put they mostly lay partial claims to the SCS splitting it up some way, but CHina claims the WHOLE DANM THING. THey can squabble over the SCS but right now they need to come together and back the US to put China back in it's place. The US isn't going to block Chinese shipping, if there's an unfair economic issue for China then they can talk that out, but it's CHina causing all the problems. I find it so funny yet so worrying that the CCP just keeps spouting propaganda trying to paint the US as somehow in the wrong when it's all China.

As an American, I support this deal. China has been hogging their neighbors fishing lanes for years, and refused to stop when asked to do so. The Chinese government talks about national security, and how other nations are out to get them, the Philippines would have most likely laughed in our faces at the offer if China didn't make them feel threatened. The irony is that nations like China and Russia could have broken US hegemony a long time ago if they treated their neighbors with respect. My oldest great uncle survived the Bataan death march. My other great uncle was a Sergeant in the army and killed by a Japanese sniper on Luzon in April 1944. His best friend gave us a Samurai sword that my uncle was personally involved with during the New Georgia campaign. We still have my uncle's letters home to his sister with blood on them. My other uncle who walked the Bataan death march said his buddies had terrible things done to them that I cannot speak of. And it wasn't just with bayonets. They all died as a result.

Two of my uncles were also on the Bataan. One got bayonetted by a Japanese soldier when he was too weak to walk. His brother tried to help him up and the Japanese threatened to bayonet him too. He had to leave his brother to die on the side of the road. No one knows where his remains are. 😓

My battalion trained in the Zambales training area in the P.I. - we were operating from ships (the battalion was 3rd Bn, 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.) I was in K Co., Weapons Platoon as a 60mm mortarman, and we were operating on helicopters from the USS New Orleans, an LPH (Landing Platform Helicopter, a kind of baby aircraft carrier for helos.) Some steep hills there; a lot of us had cramps in our leg muscles keeping us awake the first couple of nights we were in the field. We got a laugh out of one thing that happened: we were climbing a trail to a plateau at the top of one cluster of hills - it seemed like an endless stairmaster; guys were panting and our legs were shaking. Then I heard a wave of laughter coming from the back of the column forward - and a couple of skinny elderly women zoomed past, trotting up the hill alongside the trail and making it look effortless - in flip-flops! - each carrying a wooden milk crate full of ice and bottles of Coca-Cola on a shoulder. When we got to the top, they were all smiles, waiting to sell us ice-cold Cokes. I still have a photo of one of our staff sergeants standing with a bottle of Coke sticking out of a pocket on his flak jacket.

10s of 1000s of US soldiers suffered & died in two separate wars so that PH could be free. Admittedly, the one vs Spain had other primary goals but USA was dead set on liberating PH from Japan and keeping its promise to establish an independent democracy in the islands. I am always infuriated that fools can be convinced that USA was ever a colonizer vs. a liberator. The ONLY argument for colonization was the takeover of Hawaii, but that was done by civilians prior to the USG accepting the territory.

Japan invaded, ending US rule but USA returned & no nation upon earth was powerful enough to dislodge USA if USA wanted to stay. USA VOLUNTARILY gave PH to the PH people (as was right to do). What nation on earth ever surrendered a huge tract of rich land without war? European powers yielded some African claims but only after insurgencies. The closest parallel was UK yielding India, but there were many layers in that decision. UK never made any promises to do so & many Brits today still think it was a mistake to give India to Indians.

Thank you for the analysis and historical context, it helps get Philippine historical information out to a larger audience. Historical content is in line with what I've studied and read about, the grade I'd give you would be an A. There were a couple mispronounced proper nouns, but that's understandable. Some of the stock footage was petty amusing, like the guy digging for mineral wealth wearing flip flops and using a shovel. Yes, the footwear is accurate but I'm petty sure mining for metals would be done on a commercial scale. Flip flops while driving a front end loader would have worked (good luck finding that stock footage). Well done video.

China generally assembled and made low to medium end goods; these are services and functions that can be more reliably done elsewhere in Asia and particularly in Mexico where education standards are roughly double yet wages are only about a third on average. Add in shipping and energy/materials security and it is quite an advantage at least for American supply chains and by extension quite a few European ones too. China has the inexorable problems of huge financial problems internally, crashing demographic base, very tenuous food security and even more tenuous energy security to boot. If they get into an open conflict situation it could collapse any remaining supply chains for food stuffs or materials production too; it looks quite dystopian there. God only knows how they would fare with yet another pandemic too, I can't see any upsides. Businesses will be looking at this and pulling right out already; the risks are far too high. At present Apple was the biggest who stayed and they are paying a HUGE price for this apparently; I believe they are moving out now too but it's going to take a fair bit of time. I understand Xi himself isn't getting any actual information either which means the country is barely governed if at all. It's quite alarming, a LOT of people will probably die from this.

Filipinos are never into grudges. 300+ of Spanish rule yet Filipinos embrace Spain. Thus Spain refers to the Philippines with gusto rather than disdain. Several decades of the USA colonizing us yet we consider the USA a friend and ally. Over 3 years of violent Japanese occupation yet today we love Japan and Japan looks upon us as partners. That is how much we do not hate people even after all evil is done. And when the PRC or China stops being a bully, we will also forgive them. It's just being Filipino. As a Filipino saying goes... The Filipino economy is actually very weird in that it skipped the extractive and industrialization phase, and landed right straight into the services sector, with a top export product of electronics. Yep, our country went straight into an the economic model for a highly developed country with the gdp per capita of a mid-level power, while skipping the full industrialization phase. It was brought by a unique combination of a domestic history of unrest while coinciding with 3 financial crisis in the region. As a result there's a lot of growing pain but we skipped the possibility of the Dutch disease due to this, which would have been a disaster with our corrupt political situation.

The FIlipino economy had a unique path, but nonetheless, it is still considered a rapidly growing and a new industrialized country, only gaining that category in the 2010s. Meaning service was a major sector of the economy in the late 20th century before the growing trend towards manufacturing. However, with current trends today, it's hardly "in pain," as it is now one of the fastest growing economies in Asia, where its manufacturing industry, has been blooming, that's why you mentioned that our top exports are now electronics, compared to agriculture in the 2000s. "Corruption" is a over-sensationalized topic, when in reality, it has the same degree of "corruption" as with the rest of ASEAN, and is still growing incredibly fast nowadays. 2/3 of the financial crisis you imply (Asian Financial Crisis and the 2020 Pandemic) have been weathered in still well, the PH was the least affected country during the Asian Financial Crisis, the country rebounded significantly a year after the 2020 pandemic.

The semiconductor industry alone reported 15%+ growth last year. RCEP, which we recently signed, would now greatly help with that expansion of exports.

-Industrialization in Philippines would have been difficult due to the lack of energy such as coal, oil or natural gas. The Philippines Fishing fleet for inttance consumes 40% of its oil imports. China is trying to steal the natural gas reserves in the West Philippine Sea (that's what we used to call the Sth China Sea). - The fact that the Philippines is an island archipelago also prevented development of a national rail network. -Now that there are ports, road transport and air transport industrialization is possible. -I hope also that the development of renewable energies will give the Philippines some independence in the future. -I am Australian and have nothing but the best hopes for the Philippine people. I've traveled widely in SE Asia Asians and I must say the Filipinos are the most polite, sensitive people I've come across.

This has led to the stagnation of logistics of goods and people during the 80s right until the 2000s. However, as reported from global news organizations and financia commentaries nowadays, the country is now significantly investing in infrastructure in industries, such as spending 5% of our GDP in infrastructure developent yearly, or the numerous deals we made we Japan, South Korea, EU, and China with infrastructure deals. This coincides with the greater foreign investment and industrial potential capacity of the country, such as semiconductor and computer chip manufacturing. The Philippines has always been strategically important in the Asia-Pacific. It's overlooked because its a developing country (unlike Japan), and it's too Westernized to be considered exotic (unlike Vietnam, Thailand).

Its not completely European (or even Latin) or completely Asian, it's a combination. It has a Malay roots, from its language, majority Malay, with some noticeable English and Spanish semblance, its customs and culinary based on Sinic (Chinese), Indian, and Arab influences. The only thing I can see that's "western" is the Catholocism and the English-speaking part, but it's not even unique as India is also a large English-speaking country.

American presence in the Philippines would greatly help make Chinese aggressions in check. Chinese navy and "militia" has been harassing Filipino fisherman for some time now and since our navy is small we can't patrol our ezz effectively and even if we try to stop them from illegally fishing (causing overfishing resulting to our fisherman having to travel farther and farther away to catch sufficient fish for their families making them more vulnerable to Chinese navy/coast guard) and harassing Filipino fisherman we don't have the capabilities to pose a real threat to China so they often ignore us. And American soldiers on the ground would probably help ease the tension on south china sea especially the disputed islands and the artificial islands the China has developed to be a military installation. That's a lot of guys they have to keep happy. The other reason they need to expand to other countries is the 1 child policy reduced their Gene Pool. I’m an American who lived in the Philippines for many years. Two of these proposed bases are in areas I lived and traveled extensively. I’m stoked about those areas getting more developed, they are mostly rural and with the increase in automation many small farmers and the farm hands have been without employment opportunities. Also, the base in Cagayan should hopefully be in Aparri which is a strategic port where the largest river in Luzon empties into the sea.

That means we effectively beat them even with our military being shackled. The only "wars" that were "lost" were all police actions, every single time. The second hostilities break out we pull all of our businesses essentially breaking them financially. Once Russia falls China will no longer have their buffer. Imagine a roadway/railway made 200ft wide connecting Japan, Taiwan, Phillipine, Indonesia, Australia. It carries wind/solar generators to power electrified trains, aqua & agticulture hydroponics, pipelines carrying gas, oil, water. Housing to support this local food production is possible. Airfields/harbors are possible alongside this structure that defines Economic Exclusion Regions and acts as an anchor to expand acros the Pacific to perform all these activities. Ships & airplanes requiring fuel can be reduced/eliminated reducing CO gas.

You ain't kidding. China loves Philippines like Xinjiang. The 1 child policy created 300 million angry single Chinese men getting nagged by their moms to get a Wife and kids. That's a lot of guys they have to keep happy. The other reason they need to expand to other countries is the 1 child policy reduced their Gene Pool. In 2 generations, they risk marrying their relatives because there are no single women in China. Not to mention that the women are super picky and spoiled due to being rare commodities. Plenty of oil, fish and women there for All you can Eat Buffet at Philippines and other countries. Philippines almost fell for the trap and become all Han Chinese like Xinjiang. China's landmass is larger in modern times than historical times. They doing a slow and steady expansion making sure they can hold all that land they take.

I am a Filipino who grew up in New Jersey since the early 80's and now living here in the Philippines. Corruption is the main problem back then and still up today. Anti American sentiments during the mid 80's, nationalism and the Mt. Pinatubo explosion was the final nail in the coffin for the American troops exit here in the Philippines. Forty years later, the Americans and its allies are back and now facing a myriad of issues here in Asia especially N. Korea and China. We are in the most dangerous time right now and war is imminent. China is no slouch and are itchy for a fight. We the PILIPINOS must be prepared for the worst case scenario. Let's help our friend and its allies against our common enemy which is China. Time to send them back to Stonehenge.

As an American living in the Philippines for 4 years, I hope that the PH and US ties grow closer. Democracy and Freedom are not free, but are worth fighting for. I hope Filipinos understand that they will lose both their land and sovereignty if Communist China's aggressive behavior is left unchecked. I also want my family, who are Filipinos to live long, but not under a communist regime. Our forefathers fought too hard and sacrificed too much to ever let that happen. 🇵🇭♥️🇺🇸

Well done analysis. I was stationed in the Philippines for six years during Ferdinand Marco's time and it was a weird time indeed and our siding with him was a strong reason they wanted us to leave with him. I am pleased their government has reconsidered and is extending a conditional trusting of us to help them and not meddle again, hope we don't. I learned a lot about Filipino pride and logic in my stay there and you won't fool them twice, so do yourself a favor and don't try.
