I've always liked PMT a lot. I never knew anything about him until he did Miami Vice but I've always liked his outlook on life and people. He's always had such a genuinely humble presence about him and he's always been so grateful for his time on Vice but it's always made me sad how he never seemed to get any recognition after it ended. He did move on to other projects but *none* of them had any real recognition. It has always amazed me how some people can be so successful on the most popular show in the country at the time yet disappear once the project is done and over with. Ironically he resides in Miami - Kendall actually.

Contrast this interview with the last moments of Miami Vice and the Freefall episode in 1989. When Tubbs and Crockett say goodbye to each other on the waterfront over the Testarossa, the emotion from PMT looks very real. He looks ruefully like he knows this it, that the big break just came and went.

Thanks for posting. April 25, 1986 was a big day in my life as that is the day that I went to active duty (US Navy) and entered Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, IL for basic training. So for the next two months, I would be watching that much TV. Hopefully, someone will post shows that aired between April 25 and June 26, 1986. Again, thanks.

I'll say this. I know someone who ran into him a few years ago & said he was extremely nice. In fact, most accounts of people meeting PMT are pretty positive. I'm sure on top of the mountain his head got pretty big but it's past. I'm not holding that against him this many years later. I enjoyed Miami Vice the show & didn't care what the actors were like. I enjoy sports and there are plenty of bad guys in that field.

I actually saw him about three years ago on the strip on South Beach (Ocean Drive) and walked up and met him. He was extremely pleasant and outgoing and was happy to take a moment to talk to me. I expressed how much I loved his work on Vice, which I know he gets a lot of, but PMT was very warm and receptive and we spoke for about 10 minutes at a small cafe on the strip. It was a real pleasure meeting and talking to him :)

I don't know him personally but, he always impressed me as someone who was too nice to fulfill his full potential and not that I am here to judge him in any way but, I think even he would say he is perfectly ok with that because he never lost sense of his true self. PMT has always been a very spiritual person who lived a very healthy lifestyle and took exceptional care of himself. Ricardo Tubbs was a role he was absolutely BORN to play and NOBDY else could have brought all of the things he brought to that role. He is living his fullest life full of great successes across many disciplines. He should have been an even bigger star. He is very, very talented.

Yes. I don't think he was cast properly. He was a sex symbol. Passionate and masculine but not a tough guy. He had a smooth speaking voice, sparkling eyes, full curly hair, and creamy skin. He looked sensual and luscious. He also had a great singing voice. And he was very passionate and charismatic. He definitely had what it takes to be a star. He definitely could have used better direction with his singing and acting career.

("The Ego Has Landed" article)...Gandhi was just a man, no matter his great achievements and, moreover, who better to compare oneself to and emulate?...Having seen the above interview and read the aforementioned article, I perceive the PMT, as, being, very ambitious, inspirational, motivational, intelligent, articulate, generous, very hardworking, very health-conscious and a perfectionist.

Assuming that everyone wants to constantly hear about those goals and about how highly you regard yourself is an entirely different thing. Many famous people have achieved far greater successes than a long-forgotten PMT could have ever dreamed of and they were never this self-absorbed. The point is about being modest, humble and classy in spite of your goals and successes. If you want to take offense to something, try a mediocre TV actor who never achieved anything extraordinary comparing himself to the likes of world-changing figures like Gandhi, Edison and Ford. To answer your question about this particular interview though, for starters, he couldn't just say he was honored to be on the Johnny Carson show and leave it at that. He instead had to explain how it was a "continuation of one of my dreams and visions that I put in motion" and make it all about him. This doesn't mean he was a bad person or that I hate him, but on the contrary nobody was a bigger fan of Miami Vice than I was and in my view nobody but PMT could play the role of Rico Tubbs better than him. This is just a reality about his real-life personality at the time. Don Johnson back then was actually far worse than him, but now as older guys they are different.

PMT is really a great guy, astute intelligent and handsome. Don Johnson had famously handsome movie star quality and persona too. But he really didn’t have any advantage in movie star presence over PMT in my opinion. My feeling about PMTs middling TV and movie career since MV ended is that he was just too distracted by too many business ideas. He made a commitment to succeed at whatever he was interested in. A jack of all trades is probably closer to what became of his entertainment career. Even though he comes across really nice, humble, cool and grounded, what my suspicion is that he likes to be in charge and take total control at whatever he does. Hes like a business man 1st and an artiste 2nd. His music career and label ownership shows up that ambition pretty well.

PMT clearly tries to manipulate Carson here - you can hear in His tone when the interview starts - he clearly sees Carson as an old man who needs to be humored by being laughed with or at (around the 1'08' mark) - and tries to take the interview where he wants it to go. Big mistake. Carson was no old fool and lets PMT burn Himself out AND make a fool of Himself in the process. You can see by Johnny's glances to Ed and presumably De Cordova and His laughter that He sees PMT as the big headed and out of control person he was at this point in his life/career/dreams.

Jay Bix Also there is no record whatsoever anywhere that PMT was nominated for an Emmy or a Peoples Choice Award for Whack Attack. Im guessing he was on Whack and imagining the whole thing.

Jay Bix That's strange because I didn't get that from him *at all* here. I personally met PMT in Miami a few years ago and of all the interviews I've ever seen him do he was always very fun loving, light hearted and quite enjoyable. The time I met him I spent a good 15 minutes talking to him and was even more impressed with just how 'normal' he is. He didn't try to steer the conversation nor did he have an agenda in what he wanted to convey to me. Of all the celebrities I've ever met PMT was by far THE most down to earth individual of any of them. That said, your lack of thumbs-up votes indicates people don't seem to agree with your assessment of PMT's demeanor :>\

I was quite interested. It was Carson, God rest his soul, who shut it down. Well, we have to take a break now... In my opinion, right when it was getting good. Carson was only human. Therefore, fallible.

Interesting to see this interview almost 28 years later....Phillip Michael Thomas with all his big plans for mega-stardom faded into mediocrity after Miami Vice ended. Talk about delusions of grandeur, I think Phillip really alienated a lot of people in the industry as well as his fans when he made these conceited self-centered statements about how successful he was going to be. He should have followed Johnny's example who was not only one of the richest people in show business but also the most modest. I never heard Johnny blowing his own horn, too bad Phillip didn't pick up on that.
