Great video. I respect how freely you share your knowledge. Some people would have you think making a kydex holster is comparable to building the space shuttle.

Ah, friction fusing. Same way you can seal a plastic bag using scissors! Another good reason to spend some dough on a belt/disc sander. Thanks so much for sharing :D

Jon thanks for sharing... If your buffer dies I have had good luck with 40 h. Freight buffer. What is the compound? Are you having any trouble with the buffer taking off the black rivet finish? I have that issue...my buff wheel stinks. Where do you get your replacement wheels? Thanks again, you guys rock, amazing finish

Thanks for all your sharing info....I asked a question to one of the Facebook Kydex sellers and couldn't even get a response

Jon, Thanks for the excellent videos & sharing. Could you tell me the lowdown on your buffer. Where did you get it? I checked Harbor Freight and didn't see anything like it. could you also let us know about the buffing wheels, cotton or felt and grade. Thanks Gary

With nylon, you can cut it with a hot-knife and get a really tidy edge, but if you try to hot-knife through Kydex or apply a high, direct heat, it will do some crazy things. In addition to the process in the video, I'll also give the edges a once-over with 600 grit before I do the final buff, just for extra awesomeness. In a sense, the buffing wheel does "melt" the Kydex. The friction from the wheel and the abrasive compound does fuse the edges to a degree.

Great vid, Jon. I've attempted the same process, and it seems to work but my results are pretty inconsistent. I'm using a denim wheel with compound and trying to figure out if I'm applying too much pressure or my speed is too high, as I'm using a 3800 rpm bench grinder. Any suggestions?

I use high RPM, a light touch, and a felt wheel. Notice, the buffer will be more aggressive if you "pull" against the direction of rotation.

@078gary This is just the cheapest buffer that I could find on Amazon. On one side, I'm using a sisal wheel for more aggressive and coarse finishing, and on the other, I'm using medium felt wheels.

I was wondering how the higher end companies achieved their finished edge. What buffing compound did you use?
