@@matepavic6929 Plato is strikingly egalitarian, at least in the Republic. He is not "not a sexist" by the strictest definition, but it's almost shocking to see him write that women are to be treated just like men in his kallipolis, and defend it with argument. They can even become philosopher-queens. Note that the kallipolis is an analogue for the human soul, so Plato (via Socrates) essentially argues that women are just as worthy of philosophical pursuit and perfecting their souls as men. Aristotle, on the other hand, is not so progressive.

Aristotle is talking about individuals. He would also consider it unbecoming to make light of everything, so some people are in fact righteously indignified (another virtue), and even sticking with this virtue, it is good to be serious about some things. That is the whole point of moderation.

Here, in Portugal, it's a mandatory subject through 10th and 11th grade. We usually have to take a national written exam on Philosophy at the end of 11th grade, as well. Right now, I'm studying Aristotelian Logic. We actually have a really good education system, despite our current economic struggles. Some students just don't make the best of it. Well, that and our job market is terrible right now. Most of our graduates are emigrating to France, England, Spain, etc. Now, I feel like rambling for a bit, so if anyone's a bit curious about our school system, do read on. If not, a good day to you, fellow sir, madam and/or apache. __ Portugal's school system is almost upside down, in comparison to the American, for example, in the sense that our public schools have, generally, (much) better education than the private ones. But I'm well aware that USA's private universities are among the best in the world. First, we have what we call Basic School (1st-9th grade), composed of 3 "Cycles" (literally translated). After this, you have to enter one of the many Professional Courses (which are more job-oriented, although they're usually seen kind of badly, because it was the sort of education you'd get before the Carnation Revolution of 1974), or you have to choose a field between "Sciences and Technologies", "Socioeconomic Sciences", "Languages and Humanities" or "Visual Arts". These are collectively called the "Scientific-Humanitarian Courses". These 4 all have the same core subjects (Portuguese; a second language, though we learn a 3rd language during the 3rd Cycle; Philosophy and Physical Education) and then each field branches out with their own subjects (you do have to choose from some of them). All Secondary Schools teach these 4 fields and sometimes professional courses. These are the most common options for education, from 10th to 12th grade, but there some more. For example, right now, I'm half a month into 11th grade, in a Specialised Artistic Course (same core subjects, plus History of Culture and Arts, Drawing A, along with quite a few others, depending on which specialisation you choose). There are only two Specialised Artistic Schools in Portugal, which are the "Escola Artística de Soares dos Reis" (the best one, of course), and the "Escola Artística de António Arroio". A "Mini-Bauhaus", like some of our teachers call it. Yet again, if you're curious about the names, Soares dos Reis was a very important Portuguese sculptor from the 19th Century, although he wasn't very recognised and/or understood. Search for images of "O Desterrado", one of his best pieces. On the other hand, António Arroio was an engineer, critic, politician and teacher that, between other things, promoted art and technical education in Portugal. Alright then, this is plenty enough. Correction and fun facts. Aristotle actually studied and worked at Plato's school Akademia for nearly 20 years before leaving for Macedonia and then coming back to Athens again to open his own school. Plato had two nicknames for him. The first was "The Mind" . When Aristotle wasnt at class Plato would say" The Mind is absent and my audience is deaf " . And because Aristotle would often choose to stay at home and study on his own Plato would also refer to him as "The Reader"(he was a huge bookworm since early age . His father was a doctor and Aristotle grew up reading his books.)

@@AriadnaGrauInfintyBlue you are right, rhetoric as a practice pro-existed of course and so did other scholars like the sophists, but Aristotle wrote three books (which all together are called Rhetoric) which analyze and explain rhetoric and its methods, structure etc. It's a complete treatise (a disquisition) of the theory of rhetoric, consisted of three books, including 60 chapters. A complete theory. Rhetoric was very influencial in this tradition and his analysis on logic and its influence continued in the 19th century. That's why he is called the father of rhetoric , among other things.

Also, Aristotle's Rhetoric and the sophists' rhetoric is not the exact same thing. You can find more info on that googling Aristotle's (or even Plato's) criticism on sophistical rhetoric. :)

@@Simpaulme neither one. Aristotle is not responsible for Alexander´s actions. We are still learning useful things from Aristotle´s life. What can we learn from Alexander´s life? In my opinion, Alexander, Julius Cesar, and Napoleon, and other similar men, were just mass murderers, who brought chaos, death, tragedy, to thousands of people who lived far away from them, who were not causing any harm to them, just for the "glory" of conquering more land. History should praise more the thinkers than those futile murderers. On the other hand, these other three men, Socrates, Plato, and Aristoteles, have been a completely different influence in the world for more than two thousand years.

I think it's a conceit of the modern age to assume that those who came before us were somehow less than we are today. Why wouldn't Aristotle have acknowledged the problems of our society and complexity of our thoughts, then attempted to resolve them. (Note: I said "attempted.") I imagine there were plenty of others in cultures all over the world, who lived before Aristotle who also posited the same questions and attempted to resolve them. As we are, today, attempting to do the same as we struggle with the same problems that have always plagued humanity. Just because technology has changed, it doesn't mean human beings have.

The vastness of ideas and philosophy fascinates me; like a childlike enthusiasm. My emotions and feelings get heightened and I can also feel a calmness within it. His way of thinking and critical judgement on politics including critique of democracy is something no one looks at today, especially as his message may be controversial. In that he argued the masses shouldn't be allowed to govern the country as you don't let passengers sail a ship over trained experienced captains. He argued that the wise and educated with sound thoughts and thinking should be allowed to rule. He himself never saw himself as worthy to judge others, even under pressure and accepted his death sentence in the hand of a majority vote by mass.

Remember once there was a theory (a good one at that) where politicians would be replaced by scientists, mathematicians, economists and philosophers. Imagine if this was implemented into today's society. As a thirteen year old I am truly scared and worried for the future of our world as politicians ignore climate change, the potential of nuclear weapons and intelligent A.I and I wish our leaders were philosophical thinkers. My father buys all of your books and as do I, you motivated me to study more than I could ever have imagined. I hope to maybe become a lawyer ( I know, very vital to preventing climate change) but I also dream of venturing to Africa and volunteer myself to help the children there. I urge anyone reading this to think more of others and verge away from the status quo and the pressures of the social world. As I am from an unfortunate family background my only hope is my smarts. I had philosophy and sociology at school. Elective subjects weren't a thing on my country (I think they may have changed it nowadays), but we did have extra classes, which didn't weigh in anything (you couldn't really fail them, because you weren't graded), one of them was history of arts. I'm glad I had the opportunity to study all of those and even if at the time I was relatively interested in them, I realize now that when I was younger I just didn't give this kind of stuff enough credit or attention. It's crazy how much more interesting some things are after some years have passed.

I like this video. It makes me sad that other readers of Aristotle's work don't see that we was doing more than writing disconnected musings on different topics. He was creating one body of work; connecting the pieces creates something larger and more complete. He's a very beautiful thinker.

I fell in Love with Physics in 2012, thanks to the Legendary Teacher 'Puneet Daryani' who taught us at IITians Pace, Nerul, Navi Mumbai. He really triggered the Thirst for Proof in me. Although I was never taught Logic as a subject at school, a good understanding of Newtonian Mechanics laid down the seeds of Logical Reasoning and Radical Scepticism in me. Only around 2 years ago did I come to know about the subject called Logic and it's history. Aristotle's Syllogism is something that I had already been familiar with. However, I never knew that it was Aristotle that developed the first formal system of reasoning. I looked a little bit more into the history of not just Logical Reasoning, but even Maths and Science. Ever since then, the Ancient Greeks have resonated with me, coz I am so much like them. I have always considered myself to be nothing more than a Human Being. However, I do identify as Half Bharatiya Half Greek. Haha. Anyway, Love from Bharat ! Namaskaaram ! 🙏🏼 😄

These synopses of great philosophers are wonderful and pregnant with the most important aspects of their teachings. They are witty and fast paced; I'd much rather replay a video to make sure I get everything than get bored by long pedantic explanations. The great part is that you are being succinct without leaving anything out, which has always been my goal in philosophy. (Oh, and thanks for the video on "Misemployment." That really needed to be said and is a beginning toward our society addressing the fact that there simply aren't enough jobs for everyone. How will our Calvinistic ethos handle this?)

7kurisu I can relate completely. I'm a composer who has discovered after many years that no one is interested in my music. At my age, I have found myself with no social context. But really, with society the way it is, I don't really want to contribute to it any more. It is a sick and twisted thing, but I keep searching for a way I don't have to give up my self to stay alive. I think the key is to try and focus on making someone else happy, even for a moment, and then try to focus on that instead of the negativity. That might even be a little easier for you than it is for me; I don't know. I've burned all my bridges. If you wanted, maybe you and I could be friends and talk more. Chris O'Rourke It is not that there is no one around that is not interested, it is more of the fact that you have no platform to present. Doing something for others to make them happy is as easy as doing what you love and visa versa, what I am saying is I am sure that your music has made other people happy and would make more happy if they had a chance to hear it. I do not know your music but I do find it hard to discover new music of any genre (and I do love most of them).
