An average uninspired mind can remember facts for a few weeks enough to pass an exam, but it is only after you graduate that you will realize you have learned nothing. Plato would call you a working class slave, destined to serve greater men like Auxiliaries and Philosopher Kings who actually love wisdom and knowledge and take the time and put in the effort to read and understand the lessons of the past and take that knowledge into the future. You would not have the right to vote in Plato's Republic, but you probably wouldn't care because you don't really understand the point of that anyways, having never had a desire to learn, nor attended any free lectures because it seemed like too much of a chore, instead of the yearning for wisdom and knowledge that it should be. +cocoarecords At his trial (for corrupting the youth and not honoring the gods) he didn't resort to sophistry, even though doing so probably would have mitigated his sentence to banishment. He basically said "I'm old and gunna die soon anyway, so allow me to carefully explain how wrong you all are." Even in the brief time before he drank the poison, his friends pleaded with him to escape. While he could have bribed his way out and gotten away, he chose to go through with the execution and was pretty damn jovial about it. Basically, the "point" was his philosophy in general. By handling his trial and execution the way he did, he pretty much ensured that everything he taught would live on untarnished. He was the master of sticking to his guns.

And it doesn't make it easier to like it when you're a teenager and God forbid you like anything different or intellectual. I've found my fellow nerds.
@splatproductions998 жыл бұрын
+Ash Trancy I know. When someone says philosophy is useless, it's usually because they don't really know what it is and what it has done. Everything one does is because of philosophy, everything we have done as a race is because of philosophy. It's especially annoying when people question why you would take philosophy. There's more to life than just math and science, and quite frankly, I prefer the arts despite growing up in a rather science and math based household. When did education stop being about learning and more about practicality? I still love to learn the theory and thought more than how to apply it.

Both characters made each other a better version of themselves. Chidi made Eleanor aware of her selfishness which caused her to change and Eleanor made Chidi aware of his indecisiveness which caused him to change. At the end of the series they were both better people than they started out as. I just think that it’s a really nice touch that the writers included this type of relationship as they discussed philosophy a lot in the show.

Plato...how we need you and your guidance more than ever right now. We would be fulfilled if our world lived by his philosophy. Democracy has not worked when can we say let's try something else. Companies rebrand and reinvent themselves all the time, is it time for us to do something different? I am tired of what is going on around the world, its depressing, exhausting, and I just want peace and happiness for everyone. I believe plato would have wanted that. Keep hope alive😊!

Philosophers of today have failed us - the top religions of the day are Communist, Corrupt religions OPENLY preaching Nazi ideas Communist - the language communists use to describe their great, loving leader & they are so happy to live under him, the threats against others are similar to what these religions use Corrupt - in real life if someone were to imply that you got your job not because of your hard work & qualifications, but because of your "relationship" with your boss, you would get upset and a fight might ensue But that is the NORM in religion - Heaven cannot be Earned, the only way in is to hve a "relationship" with the top man Nazi ideas - the Nazis made being a Jew a crime - didn't matter who they were as people, their beliefs sent them to gas chambers in hell These religions also threaten others with the same dire consequences - "God" will reward "his" people and if you don't convert to theirs, you too will be set apart and dumped into gas chambers in hell And they preach these ideas OPENLY! So much for our intelligence and education and lofty morals of reading philosophy

Think more is probably the opposite to popular opinion these days. People seem to think that thinking more complicates things. However, the complication doesn't arise from thinking rather just letting your mind through whatever it receives from the external world and allowing the emotions those thoughts create to take a hold of you, in many ways the exact opposite of thinking consciously. Lovely watch!

Great lesson! Thank you! Watching the part about the Socratic discussion I remembered an interview Rebecca Goldstein gave to Robert Pollie . She is the writer of the book: "Plato at the Googleplex: Why Philosophy Won’t Go Away". She said that Socrates believed in "lived conversation" for very profound reasons: One of the things we have to do in order to maximise our coherence is to see the "hidden assumptions" that are so deep down in our thinking. So deep down that they're invisible to us and the only way to bring them fore is in the argumentation. She said this must be the reason why Plato wrote Soctares' thoughts in form of dialogues. May be there is one thing that bothered me a bit in the lesson. That thought about ugliness can be dangerous. Poor Elephant Man, Quasimodo, Cyrano de Bergerac... They were all very ugly at first sight but they were such beautiful people indeed... And may be the last thought about the philosophers being the ideal leaders. I wish it was true... But as we know "the best and the brightest" created a lot of evil too, when they got into power. Well, but may be they were not philosophically well equipped. Outside of the academia I mean. In real life. Since there are many intellectuals who aren't wise at all. Thanks a lot to everybody who work on these videos!
@aguramiagbeyegbe335210 жыл бұрын
On your comment about the ugly actually being beautiful, it supports the necessity of seeing "hidden assumptions". Sometimes you need to dredge the depths of humanity itself to see the beauty beneath a facade of what many would call ugly, a presumption grounded in relative ignorance. Assume nothing, question everything - You should know who said this =]

Plato was an Idealist, a common philosophy today. He heeds good messages for how to improve your life through education and rational thought that can often seem missing in modern idealism. Idealism is optimistic in nature, but is not optimism. Many Idealists devote a lot of time to the more negative aspects of life, helping them to grow into their ideals of making themselves, their relationships or the world a better place. This is necessary, for an Idealist to realize their ideals they must question+investigate what's needed for them and how or even if they can actually come together. Here's a message from me to any Idealists out there: The simplest things matter in making improvements, even if they aren't the ideal itself.

I just finished re-reading The Republic now that I am over 50, having first read it in the course of my philosophy degree all those years ago. Having done so, I do not recognize Plato's philosophy at all in this video. The social engineering proposed in The Republic is a nightmare. The State is to allocate its citizens into groups based on their aptitudes (in "music" and "gymnastics"). Each group is to then live communally with shared wives. This allows the state to breed children as it would prize dogs or race horses. All babies are to be taken from their mothers at birth and raised by the State. Consequently, no one can know which children are theirs or, conversely, who their parents might be. Therefore, so the argument goes, everyone will treat every other member of the State like family, thereby ensuring loyalty to the State. Babies deemed unworthy are to be killed at birth, unbeknownst to their mother. Those deemed worthy after spending the first 50 years of their life in training (including military command, since war is among the three "greatest and finest things" in life: see para. 599(5)) are to rule. These are the "Guardians" referred to in this video. The Guardians are then to dictate all aspects of everyone's lives. How people think, what they believe and what they do are all as dictated by the Guardians. The only positive aspect is that women are to be fully men's equals, subject only to being assigned less physically demanding duty in war. Art, contrary to what this video says, is to be illegal because it is anti-truth in that it is imitative. For example, a painting in which a subject is seen to be wearing sandals is inferior to the sandals themselves and the painter inferior to the cobbler. This is because an image of something is once removed from the thing in itself, which is again removed from the idea or "form" of that thing (in the same way that a triangle is only an instance of the idea of a triangle as defined by geometers). Being thrice removed from the reality, paintings are necessarily fraudulent and therefore apt to lead citizens into falsehoods. The same applies to poets, including Homer and Hesiod. There is no room for them in this State. Plato's Republic is nothing short of a totalitarian theocracy with the "good" and "justice" as determined by the "Guardians" filling the role of religious dogma and cult leaders. Democracy is ridiculed. And, far from any of this being carefully examined through dialectics, Plato consistently relies upon the most absurd sophistry while his fictional interlocutor, Glaucon, says only such inanities as "you are right", "it is obvious", "it cannot possibly be other than as you say". That, my friends, is Plato's Republic.

@Wonderbuntastic8 жыл бұрын
their* and I disagree. Plato seemed like a guy who wanted what was best for everyone. It's very kind to dedicate your life to something like that. According to the video, he might say criticism is sometimes required for kindness.
@brucewilliams10448 жыл бұрын
But lots of people find criticism rude so his own plan would would reject his ideas.
@Wonderbuntastic8 жыл бұрын
I wonder how old you are. To generalize criticism itself or people's reaction to it doesn't really deserve a well thought out response in opposition. Be that as it may, criticism and kindness aren't mutually exclusive. I even said that in my last comment. Socrates died unyielding to the command to just let people be without his somewhat "insulting" insight. No one should be afraid of criticism itself and just because people don't like doesn't mean you can't give it unsolicited and courteously if you think it's something they should hear. Even if you're wrong it can start a discussion and those types of discussions have the potential to make people better. Execution of one's criticism is most widely the problem with people's acceptance of it. If they'd had the thought to criticize themselves they might not reject it but many do because they have such pride for themselves. It's all just something to think about. If I've criticized the presentation of your argument, it's in hopes that you improve your philosophical standing.
@brucewilliams10448 жыл бұрын
Trying to call someone out without without being rude is rude itself. people will get even more offended is you say "no offense but you stink" rather than just "you stink". It gives people the impression that you are trying to break them. If you actually want to tell someone about their faults then you should just be bland and not care about what they have to say. Instead of trying to build a school of kindness we should be building a school on how to accept criticism.
@arasanm.968 жыл бұрын
well, you see, for that, i like the analogy that personalityhackers gave in one of their podcasts; the difference between niceness and kindness. we should stop being nice; harmonizing with people, or harmonizing people together, usually by ignoring errors, until they become so much, they erupt. we, rather, should be kind. meaning that we harmonize BY addressing issues, flaws and errors, in order to create a more sustainable harmony and goodness. so yeah, your concern IS a legitimate one :)

Figure out what exactly? Plato had a legit hardon for tyrany... he would probably not admit it, but try reading some of his ideas and then compare them to ancient Sparta (which was an oligarchy, true, but the regime was so tought and unforgiving, that it was basically a tyrany)... And his ideas smell like a stew made from fascist socks (wouldnt be surprised if Hitler was a fan of Plato). His idea was to actually ban people who were ill of body and/or mind from proper treatment, to shun them fromt the society and to ultimately dispose of them (guess what that means). He also hated fun, meaning all forms of art, poetry mainly, were supposed to follow strict rules, including not ever using themes like crying, despair or too much pleasure. So god forbid if people were actually enjoying themselves... I wish people stopped putting him on such a piedestal, as he was just an old, self loving fart with no friends, or at least he presents himself like that...

Each person should want to seduce the other into becoming a better version of themselves." I love this. This is what I want in a relationship.

Plato said: Vidon (On the Immortality of the Soul): This dialogue takes place in the room where Socrates was waiting for death. Because attendance, based on what he claims that the true philosopher is not afraid of death, calls on the teacher to demonstrate the immortality of the soul. Here, four basic arguments are laid out: The first argument, which is based on the existence of paradoxes, says that, based on the continuous process of things, we cannot understand something (sleep, for example) without relying on its opposite (vigilance is not limited to). Because death demonstrates the transition from life to the next, it makes sense to believe that "giving birth again" means moving from life to life. Thus, if the soul is born again, this means that reincarnation is necessarily true.

I don't know about other branches, but Mathematics (which is probably the purest form of science) is also a kind of philosophy, except, written in words in the language of the universe. (Ok, that last bit sounded kinda cheesy) Mathematics helps us the understand the universe in the most fundamental way possible. So much so that sometimes it appears counterintuitive, but that's how the universe is. Even the greatest mathematicians are baffled by their own work (and probably the most). Many mathematicians are also philosophers. Take for example, Rene Descartes. One of the most influential mathematician and philosopher. PS: sorry for poor grammar.
