I''ve just finished Barrett's book The Illusion of Technique (1978). I found it an excellent read. So rich. He fuses scholastic and academic competence with dynamic, earnest, personal engagement. I liked it so much that I'm reading it again.

I did a wikipedia review of the events in 1968 and then 2023. "The nobility of our craft,” he declared, “will always be rooted in two commitments, both difficult to maintain: the refusal to lie about what one knows and the resistance to oppression.” True then, true today.

I particularly liked the end of the world anecdote. I came to the conclusion a few years ago that the statement 'most people would sooner die than think..." is very true and seemingly thinking that I am thinking is a form of 'double think' if I take into account my own "lizard brain".

"Felix has been said to represent a child's sense of wonder, creating the fantastic when it is not there, and taking it in stride when it is. His famous pace-hands behind his back, head down, deep in thought-became a trademark that has been analyzed by critics around the world."

Existentialism is dead. The new religion and ultimate cause for today's secularist is to be politically correct.

It might be dead but it's sort of having a rejuvenation among the youngsters of today. From Nihilism to Existentialism. It's what happened in the early days and it's repeating itself now but in a sort of subtle manner and not really noticeable. Very low-key.

Correction: the "new religion" is the same old Patriarchy, featuring knuckle draggers opposed to any display of manners or courtesy. 😎
