In a way, he anticipates here AI, artificial intelligence, which "aspires" to use the data-knowledge of a given field, in this case history of wars, in order to "determine" whether and how to approach such a geopolitical situation. He uses the term "patterns," which makes some sense here. But our current applications of AI had better not rely upon the computer calculations alone. A human would still have to apply his or her judgement to the unique, particular situation, with all those variables mentioned in this brilliant talk.

If I heard correctly, he even stipulates the notion of a driverless car.

His man er of speech sounds as if he is improvising; yet, the logical coherence and structure of these ideas from beginning to end indicate a careful composition. Could he be reading a prepared script? tt certainly ly sounds extemporaneous.

It was common for a professor of mine to give hour long lectures for undergraduate courses with five words on a page. I suspect the BBC who commissioned him to give the talk had him write out detailed notes because it was a 30 minute block of time unlike a public lecture which can run over time or be short.

It is worth recognising he spoke Russian as his mother tongue. He learnt English at age 12. Berlin was fluent in French, German, and Italian, and he knew Hebrew, Latin, and Ancient Greek.
