"Amour" dives into the messy, intense side of love-the kind that’s equal parts passion and destruction. The title, French for "love," perfectly fits the song’s exploration of a relationship that’s as much about pain as it is about passion. It reflects the duality of love and hate coexisting, as shown in lines like "Life is better when broken, you get just what you think you should," which capture the idea of embracing chaos in their connection. The French lyrics-"Je t'aime pour toujours, Mon coeur est tien, Je te déteste, amour de ma vie, Je ne mens pas, je t'adore" ("I love you forever, My heart is yours, I hate you, love of my life, I’m not lying, I adore you")-say it all. It's love and hate intertwined, neither able to exist without the other. Pau was inspired to write the song after watching Ratatouille. There’s this scene where a French couple is arguing in a completely unhinged way-they’re shouting, and at one point, there’s even a gun involved. But suddenly, all that anger flips into a heated kiss. It’s chaotic and intense but oddly tender in its own way. That energy is exactly what Pau captured in "Amour." It’s not about clean, perfect love-it’s about the kind that makes you bleed but also makes you feel alive.

Totally agree. The first time I watched The Warning I was stunned watching Ale: What was a word-class Jazz Bassist doing playing Rock? I could hear the influence of Jazz Bassist Jaco Pastorius, greatest Bassist of all time. I saw The Warning live in Brooklyn again. The building was constructed to withstand a minor earthquake. Ale's subharmonics were so insane I was sure she'd bring the building down. I was at the front of the balcony; Ale caused it to vibrate so intensely it was frightening (my teeth, bones, blood also vibrated). Ale's notes, crystal clear, achieved epic subharmonics (all alarms went off at the Global Seismographic Network). It's easy to miss how much Ale does while making it seem like she's not doing much. Ale plays Bass-line, Melody, throws in Bass solos; her slides up/down the fretboard are epic. Ale uses her fingers, and then a pick for even more bite; she hits the strings with such force it adds intense/massive percussion to notes. Ale makes playing melody and rhythm simultaneously seem easy yet it's done via intensely difficult extensions/ progressions with her left hand/fingers. Ale gives The Warning much of its unique sound and its Wall of Sound. It's incredibly rare for a Rock Band to structure so many of their songs around the Bass, but other Rock bands don't have Ale.

Her jazz influences really carry her. Being three and five years younger, she had a lot of catch up to do in the early years of the band. But a couple of years into it, she was playing the complex bass lines in *Hysteria* by Muse, well enough to use a live recording of it as her audition to get into Berklee at the age of TEN. This week, she turned 20! She's a seasoned pro.

This is the exact reason I fell in love with this group of young ladies. Songs like Survive, Animosity, and Amour are not your typical "teenage" rockers. There's substance in all their songs, but especially these 3 songs. The beauty and talents of these 3 is easy to see, but the genius is in the songs they compose and perform so well. 🤘😎

OK, Phil, I'm going to comment. I'm a jazz musician/fan and have an undergrad degree in music. I probably qualify as a music nerd and I love theory and composition too (all the way down to the mathematics of it). I love your taking these warning songs apart at the level you do. Anyway, I believe that they are 100% intentional in everything that they do - compositionally that is. I believe that. They are subtle nuanced and highly complex when you look at the whole of the song. As you say "top tier" This is especially true of amour - which is my favorite song of theirs for many of the reasons that you cited.. So, don't doubt or second guess what you are hearing. I believe that they have some sort of synergistic, weird sister thing going on and that they compose this stuff collectively in the warning cave. It takes all three to do it, but Pau is likely the central spark that ignites the genius. And Oh my god what a drummer, and oh my god what a bass player - and oh my god DANY. Any way, I hear you bro - but don't doubt the level of genius that you're hearing. NOT accidental but synergistic and inspired - yes. I'd love to be a little mouse in the corner when these three hammer out a composition like amour. Now that would be worth paying a lot to see. Ale probably talks more than you think she does.

They have explained, until certain point, their process of song creation. In short they said something like: Pau is the spark (as you said) the engine, who gets things moving.Basic ideas. Dany is a kind of trailblazer, she explores different paths to keep things going. Ale is a kind of decision maker, she choses the right path, apparently she has a great taste to know what sounds best and their old sisters trust her. If they don't agree in something, they vote🤣 I heard also from a producer ( David Bendeth ) that Dany is who takes the reponsability for the finished product, she is who works out all details with editors/mixers and sound engineers.

They have equal voice and importance. They told a story where they were composing Money and the discussions got a little too hot to the point that Dany and Ale had to take Pau out of the room until she relax. Ale is the last person who lets Pau get away with anything. So, yes, Ale decides as much as her sisters and they give equal respect to each other. It would be really interesting to see how they communicate even with their eyes haha.

I think that many people (especially non-musicians) don't realize what a huge impact the girls' studying music theory and composition at Berklee had and has on their songwriting prowess. I'd also include their classical piano training with that. For years, they've understood on a higher level more complex harmonic and melodic movement and arrangement, which I believe quickly became relatively subconscious and innate. I firmly believe that it served to broaden their pallet of options and possibilities when songwriting. To me as a lifelong musician, the irrefutable evidence supporting my claim of Berklee's impact is the jaw-dropping and utterly-astounding compositions of their concept and 2nd album, "Queen Of The Murder Scene". The standout songs on that album: "The One" and "The Sacrifice" are two of the absolute BEST compositions I've EVER heard by ANY band, and I'm 63 years old. They wrote those songs not long after leaving Berklee.
@TomG-y5k

Leaving Berklee as TEENAGERS eight (?) years ago! Ale had to get a waiver because she was so young. They tested her too. Ellen gave them some of the tuition, but they got in on merit. Somebody (her mother?) had to carry Ale's bass around campus for her because it was too big for her to lug any significant distance. IIRC, "When I'm Alone" from XXI Century Blood started life as a class project Dany wrote at Berklee.

Stop doubting yourself Phil; you've got this. DPA are great composers. Ale's Bass and Pau's Drum's are brilliant because Ale and Pau use their instrumental mastery to drive "Amour"; it's why the build succeeds spectacularly despite the songs unconventional structure. As David Bendeth stated of DPA: "They are brilliant songwriters. Working with The Warning is as if it's 1970 again, Old School, Rush, all these great three-piece bands, Cream, This Band is hanging with them." Bendeth also stated that everything Dany, Pau, and Ale do in composing their music is intentional and if he said he didn't like something or tried to change anything while producing "Error" he was suddenly surrounded by "3 Dangerous Lionesses who would start yelling at him in Spanish". Thanks.

Bendeth taught them A LOT, despite sparring with them here and there. He challenged them at every turn to get better, and they did. As he said, " It's a rite of passage of sorts. They've been to David Bendeth Boot Camp." That said, they developed an instant chemistry with Anton DeLost when they worked with him on *Keep Me Fed.*

@@williamburkholder769 Totally agree. Dany, Pau, and Ale related how Bendeth told them they were playing separately, not as a group (crazy considered how incredibly locked-in they are now). There's an easy to miss tiny video of Bendeth with a Tambourine, Claves, Ganzá, (Egg Shaker). All idiophone instruments creating sound by vibration of the instrument itself. The 3 sisters were perplexed as Bendeth switched each between the sisters. In the end, Ale wound up with the Ganzá, used to set the rhythm in a band, specifically a Samba band. Bendeth had found the center of The Warning; it was Ale. Ale had to be the one to set timing, rhythm, tone. Ale then worked with Pau for 3 months; Pau staring at Ale's fingers as both played.

This song was inspired by a short scene in the animated movie Ratatouille, where the rat witnesses a woman pull a gun during a heated argument, only to lower it and kiss the man, capturing the unpredictability of human emotions. To me this explains why the song structure is like it is, with Pau going ham on the drum representing the fighting, before the chorus goes back to representing the soft passionate embrace. This also explains the bridge being with French lyrics, as the movie takes place in Paris. After watching numerous interviews and behind the scenes, everything they do when composing is intentional, where Pau is the engine coming up with melodies, concepts, lyrics, etc., then as soon as she has the base of something she brings it to her sisters, then Dany who is the fuel, suggests a ton of possible ideas on how the song could go, including a lot of bad ones, but this often sparks Pau's creativity for her to come up with many possibilities and Ale who acts as the steering wheel, is very good at deciding what direction they should take when there are too many choices. All three are involved in every facets, Ale & Dany help Pau complete/refine the lyrics, Ale & Pau help Dany with her guitar and singing parts, Dany & Pau help Ale with the bass and singing, and Ale & Dany help Pau with the drums and singing. This song also contains some of my favorite The Warning lyrics. - Like two birds of a feather, a pair of broken hearts in one - Don't you think it's too easy to love the light we show? It is only in shadows where the truth is finally known - Life is better when broken, you get just what you think you should

It was probably my 3rd time listening to the song that I noticed the chorus riff matching the bridge lyrics. And my immediate thought was that because the lyrics of the pre-chorus and chorus are sort of lamenting their doubts of the other person, the riff is meant to BE the bridge. They are vocalizing their frustration ("would you die for me" being a question of whether they are being valued), but their heart is singing their deeper feelings via the guitar riff. That was my interpretation, at least.

Awesome review Philberto :-).. This song is one of my favorite, and I think it's a much unappreciated, but with the Pepsi center concert release is getting some much needed love. As usual your "nerdy" analysis, does wonders in highlighting the Warning's genius. (i totally love when their music blows your mind ;-)) .From what I've gathered from all the interviews, and vlogs that the girls have released. the pivotable point in their development was when Ale's teacher asked them if they wanted to start writing their own songs, and challenged them all to write a song. Out of that exercise came their EP Escape the mind. This was the trigger that unleashed the music savant Pau to her full potential.. interview after interview highlights that Pau keeps 1000's of voice memos, when she comes up with music ideas.. and even on their latest albums, there are songs that got their origin from Pau's 13 year old mind. Add to the genius of Pau, Ale's incredible sense of what sounds right.. she is often the final voice in the approval of a song. If Pau & Ale weren't enough, add Dany's heart.. she takes all of the songs and adds the feeling and emotion that the songs deserve, not to mention the guitar riffs that give life to the songs. What a powerful combination.. incredible drums, bass and guitar, and genius minds in song composition.. no wonder they are viewed as the resurgence of rock and roll.. Phil, please continue your insigtful reviews.

Their music just hits me. All of their songs do something for me in a good way. Not a song to skip in their entire catalog. This song in particular is one of my many favorites. There are many. The melody(ies) in this song grabbed me the first time I heard it. There's a 6 episode documentary called 'Mayday in the Making' which was released when the Mayday EP dropped 2021, in anticipation of the full ERROR album. There is a part in one of the episodes where Dany is presenting the final held note "... Yeah - Die for me" with Producer David Bendeth in the studio. Such an intriguing clip and then hearing the song that it belonged to later, I was just blown away. Thanks Phil!

As a great music lover who knows nothing about music but enjoys it to the fullest, I will always be grateful to you for being one of the few who help many of us, like me, to understand some of the reasons for our fascination with TW, at least as far as music is concerned. Expressions like: "I would die for you" are common and speak to you of the passion with which we live in our Latin culture, as in France, Italy, Spain, Mexico and the other countries of the Latin American brotherhood. Thanks and greetings from México!! 🇲🇽 🤟😁✌️ .

When Pau flexes on the drums in this song it sounds like a heightened heart beat, like things are getting heated, like a growing passion. The one thing I find with the Warning and their song writing is lots of backdrop fill that fits, and that's what I get from this part.

I am so glad I checked in with you today Phil. I completely enjoyed watching "Amour" with you and your rambling was perfect, "Amour" and "Kool Aid Kids" are my 2 favorites because they caught my ear from the first few lines of Ale's bass like "What is this". Their composition ability is Genius, especially Paulina likes to keep tricking us and keep us interested. It always works for me. If anyone reacts to "Amour" I always watch but yours is my favorite because you seemed to be feeling it and you showed me the details that made me love this song even more. I often wonder how these genius ladies have entered our lives and changed it forever. I forgot to mention that Dany's cry was the perfect ending, gets me every time like "Black Holes"

Welcome back, Phil. love your reactions and compositional analyses. I've learned a lot of neat things that i have been able to apply in my own music. The Warning are an enigma, sometimes i think it is better to not try and figure it out, just enjoy every second of every note. Doing these neat things but not making it sound to listeners as pretentious or elitist is an art. There were 4 guys from Liverpool who made you feel like everything was simple and easy even when it wasn't. On a side note, not sure if you check out other Reactors, but there are two guys in Mexico who go under the name of "Rock and Beer" and they do a Warning Friday series. Yesterday, they gave you a shout out during their reaction to "Evolve" at the Pepsi Center regarding your reaction to the difficulty of Pau's scream of destruction. It's all in Spanish so subtitles help, i still need them for certain words and phrases.

This is my 2nd favorite Warning song. You are so right about it being a 'vibe' song. I listen to it every night when turning off the lights and shutting everything down to go to bed. It puts me in a nice, calm, peaceful mood. But I have to listen to the Teatro Met version. This is one of the songs I feel is better from that show. The vocals and guitar are the center of attention in that version. This version is overshadowed by the amazing bass work. Teatro still has the amazing bass, it's just lower in the mix and that lets the song breath a bit more, and really accents the vocal build at the end. Also, there is a bit of a 2nd verse switch. Pau comes in and supports Dany for most of the 2nd verse. And to think this whole song was sparked by a short bit of the animated movie Ratatouille.

PHIL!!!! I'm so glad you're revisiting Amour. it might be one of the most underrated TW songs out there. (guess my fourth most listened song on Spoti wrapped). the lyrics are so good and raw that you could think they're inspired by any of these over the top TV couples (like I initially did but I won't elaborate who I did think of😉) but it was... Ratatouille lmao. that bassline is an absolute killer and the drums and Ale's vocals on the final chorus are *chef's kiss*. the Pepsi center gig is mixed so deliciously it could just get released as a DVD/Blu-ray (and I hope it is eventually). greetings from Mexico center!

"If people even notice or care" Hola Phil! 🤘🏼⚡

Philberto, loved the mini throw-back concert you hid in there, really took me back to that era! Merry Christmas!! Once again, you have helped me a lot. Didn't have the musical knowledge to explain why I enjoy that this song 'feels different'. I remember the first time I heard it, on Spotify while cooking dinner. Maybe because I can speak French, but the first half of the bridge didn't register in my brain what was happening right away and then it stopped me dead with a wtf? I was also impressed with Dany's accent and stunned in this video by the Mexican crowd singing it full volume. Also, I love Dany's vocal run at the end, she really does make them seem effortless. And how did I never notice until someone's comment pointed it out that Ale is singing along with Dany for that whole run. That said, Pau's galloping build sections are some of my favourite drums I've ever heard. It isn't insanely complex I'm sure, but something about it is just so satisfying and really gets my heart going. I really hope someone sent Phil a link to the 5-sec clip from Ratatouille, I can't find it anymore.

Fffing brilliant composition! It really ebbs and flows and tells a story. Pau wrote it, inspired from about 15 seconds of the movie, *Ratatouille.* I'm sure someone here will tell the story better than I remember it. Great reaction and analysis, Phil! It seems on the surface to be a simple pop/rock song, and then it amazes and brings a freshness with each listen.

Please keep doing what you are doing. Excellent music deserves to be appreciated. Many years ago British musicologist Deryck Cooke (1919-1976) wrote an essay analyzing the songs of Lennon-McCartney and compared them favorably to modern classical composers. Cooke was a composer and may be best remembered for his version of Mahler's 10th Symphony, which was unfinished when Gustav Mahler passed in 1911. Why bring that up? In your way you are doing what Cooke did in his essay. He appreciated good music and as a composer understood the art. While The Beatles were enormously popular worldwide they were dismissed as serious musicians. Cooke understood just how wrong that was and could point out where the innovations and compositional genius was located within songs that were, superficially, Pop Music. You are able to increase our enjoyment of music, and that is a wonderful thing.
