Does anyone know why PhishNet calls the Hampton 98 Tube the pinnacle of Tube jamming? That joints like 3 minutes long. I've always wondered that. IMO the King Tube title is a 3 way fight between 12/7/97 (The Originator), 12/30/97 (The Prodigal Son) and 9/15/00 (Jedi Master). I lean towards 9/15. Nobody ever discusses it in the best Tubes ever, but that week of shows produced a LOT of best evers as songs that usually dont have jams (Ice,Mango,etc) Got blown to smithereens.
@briancullen95753 жыл бұрын
Dayton 97 will always be the standout to me. Hampton 98 is noteworthy only because of its placement. The beginning of that set is as energetic as Phish ever got.

I always thought it was weird that people were so down on this Phish. I had stopped caring for awhile during the 2.0 era, but in retrospect it's not much sloppier than 97-00 is and they put a lot of effort into making amazing improvisational moments happen on a nightly basis, often succeeding. People need to drop their own context and just enjoy the music. Do people hate Kind of Blue because Miles was on tons of dope and beating women up?

I repeat it like a mantra: Hate says a lot more about the person spewing the hate than it ever will about the target; there's so little truth in it. That said, humans also have a weird fascination and all this underlying unconscious b.s. in their psyches regarding 'tortured artists'...it's almost like they get huge fucking boners when they think they see one. So they get all loud and announce how smart they are they found one, reveling in how they think they're better or something. Whatevs. It's all insignificant. What's real are those moments of pure joy we feel when we listen to Phish, when we get together with huge smiles. There will always be moderate music in the middle of the bliss, but it's so worth it to just chill and enjoy the ride til we get to that next peak with this awesome band, Trey is the man!

Yeah I was wondering where the rest of this was and the night before. I was at both. Couldn't see what was going on stage I was so far away. I agree with someone below "But this was no doubt the start to some very dark times. You can see it begin to manifest in the summer shows. And by the time Coventry rolled around it was just a jumbled up mess.". Trey's directing was kind of cringey but in reality winter of 03 was pretty good and much of the summer was good but yes by the fall it was starting to fall apart.

@mountainsinmistheals11497 жыл бұрын
catchin__ the band and fans were fucked up in 03. Summer 03 it wasn't just Trey. Mike had his moments during southern run (Charlotte was bad) basically slept on stage 1st set till they got him a mountain of blow I assume. Trey had to introduce him to the crowd with "welcome back Mike Gordon" Page off the charts fucked up at Shoreline, than nodding out in Utah. The entire band getting loose at 3 night Deer Creek run, Gorge Run. I do wonder if rest of band decided to join Trey after his winter tour antics? I missed 3 shows that year, we got some incredible shows & IMO some of the best jams Phish has ever done. I think 03 was best Phish has played since 1.0 till Bakers.

I might be crazy, but most of this version is throw away because Trey has no idea what to do. Sure, Trey eventually started playing something relevant, but that wasn't until after his embarrassing actions towards page. We all know that wasn't a special, organic moment, that was Red floating down Lazy Opy River, barely able to stand.
@tylerwatkins95828 жыл бұрын
In trey'sdrug court statements, he mentions that page was a key member of the band that said that if trey didn't get sober, he couldn't follow him as a band leader anymore. In looking at this clip, I think it's probably one of the instances that led page that decision

@me2135169 жыл бұрын
djaldd420 How exactly does the rest of the band look dejected? Everyone seems to be deep into the jam and they've got a silky smooth groove going. Can't really make out facial expressions, but I don't see any obvious signs of anyone being unhappy. I guess I'm just not seeing what you're seeing.

@UglyToontown9 жыл бұрын
djaldd420 I don't get that impression. Trey heard something he liked, he wanted to keep it in the groove. My band used to do this on stage. If somebody was laying down something fat we'd look at him and give a nod like "Keep that going." They're definitely having more fun in 3.0, but they don't strike me as dejected in this video. See if you can find the Piper -> Weekapaug from this same show. They were having a blast. But this was no doubt the start to some very dark times. You can see it begin to manifest in the summer shows. And by the time Coventry rolled around it was just a jumbled up mess.

Believe you me, I still heart Phish! But, let's not kid ourselves, this was honestly not Phish's best moments or tour for that matter. When any musician is not completely blitzed, the music is pure and has every element of intent that the band and its members had. The opposite of that is just abstract noise, and, yes I hate that. I am not hating on Phish at all, I just don't agree with a performer forgetting what's more important, the music.

Trey looks really unhealthy here. The jam isn't particularly exciting, either. It’s like he remembers the basic structure of a Phish jam but is only able to imitate what the execution should be like. Glad he got himself cleaned up.
