Cracking The Cryptic

Жыл бұрын

** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
When Phistomefel recommmends a puzzle to us we listen! It's called Anti Divisor Fillomino and it's the work of SudokuExplorer. And, of course, it's brilliant!
Play it at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Divide the grid into regions of orthogonally connected cells. Each cell should contain a number equal to the size of its region (ie the number of cells in its region). The size of any region must not divide the size of an orthogonally adjacent region.
NB We made a tiny change to the rules above compared to those in the video for the sake of clarity: the word "number" has replaced "digit" in the second sentence.

Truth be told even if it said "number" I might've missed it because I would have assumed that it's one of the numbers I can enter on the app, i.e. 0-9. Although technically it would've been my fault then and not the rules'. I'm still a little uncomfortable for puzzles where double-digit entries are required like the X-sums ones where you have to deduce the sums.

Yeah that's a problem with the wording, usually fillomino rules specify "number" there (that said, it doesn't *explicitly* say we're in decimal anywhere, and any integer can be expressed as a digit if you can pick an arbitrary high base, which is basically what Simon did with the "H")

17:20 Simon left out R4C3 to be a part of 9 and then marked as R9C1 as a 9 region. It's like a missed step of deduction that if we did that, 6 region above it would totally bump into 2 or 3

I had typed in essentially the same comment, but Simon alluded to it just a but later so I just cancelled it. I was also going to berate him for not filling in the "or some larger number" (or however he worded it) possibilities several times, until I realized the number/digit distinction problem in the rule set meant the possibilities could be quite large and not expressible using center pencil marks (unless you use base-36, which he eventually used in the final result). I did find it a bit tedious, though, how on so many occasions he had to eliminate 2, 4, 6, and/or 8, individually, instead of a sweeping "it touches a 2 so can only be an odd number".

This isn't the first time that "number" has been translated to "digit" in CtC's rewording of the rules, and has caused problems. It's a pity that lessons haven't been learnt from the previous times.

@@highpath4776 yeah, if you know the letters' ordinal positions without having to count, the rule for digits in high bases is that the Nth letter of the alphabet represents the value 9+N, which is not quite as easy as 10+N would be.

Strictly speaking ortho- means 'right' both as in 'proper' (orthodox) and 'right-angle' (orthogonal) i.e. the cells connected on the 90, 180, 270 and 360-degree directions, as opposed to the 45-degree diagonals. Although 'sharing an edge' is a perfectly passable definition for sudoku purposes 😁 I'm probably wrong on some or all of this, I usually am.

I've also heard orthogonal used to say North South East or West. The orthogonal directions. Which also might be a useful way to describe orthogonal on a sudoku grid. Ps. Yes strictly speaking orthogonal does not mean, "shares an edge" as Simon puts it, despite that being practically sufficient as an explanation.

This seems possible for a mere mortal to do, especially after watching you do it. The wording of the rules about one region not "dividing" another was a bit puzzling to me (see what I did there?) so I'm glad to have watched your video to see what was meant by that. Thanks, Simon - as always, you demonstrate your love for the region-defining puzzles in this video!

Fun puzzle but rules need to be more explicit. Base 10 digits are a reasonable assumption outside of very specific industries, and numbers 1-9 are a reasonable assumption in the context of a channel heavily focused on variant sudoku.

Adding on to the Base18+ comments: You can have a numerical system with any base, although computers have made base2 (binary) and Base16 (Hexadecimal) well known. Octal (Base 8) is probably next, probably followed by Base64. As mentioned, there's a few systems that have general implementations for any Base up to 36 that follow the Hexadecimal pattern of digits followed by Uppercase letters. You could also extend this to base 62 by using upper and lower case. Although in computers there's a few specific implementations of ~Base62 systems. Base 64 is probably the most common variation of this, but the typical implementation is Letters first: A-Z, then a-z, then 0-9 and finally two punctuation marks (usually + and /). Base58 takes Base64 and removes some characters that can be visually easily confused (zero, Uppercase O, Uppercase I and lowercase l). Base62 itself is less common since it's less useful for encoding binary data but I believe it follows the same Letters first approach as Base64 and Base58.

The most elegant way I can see to disambiguate the last three (two) regions is to note: 1) there are 21 remain cells unaccounted for which cannot be one large region because 3 divides 21; 2) both the top and bottom right region(s) must be odd as they are both next to 2 regions; 3) there are 17 cells that must be made up of the upper region and the lower right region; 4) since both those regions must be odd, if they were 2 regions, their sum would be even. So they cannot be 2 regions and must be one region of size 17

It's remarkable how much people can get their knickers in a twist over the _number_ vs _digit_ issue, as though the universe has done them a fundamental injustice. Yes, CtC should pay attention to the wording of the rules, but mostly to avoid 50% of the comments whinging about this. At least in my native Dutch, the two equivalent words ( _getal_ and _cijfer_ ) are somewhat interchangeable in common usage. Is English more rigid in this regard or are CtC viewers just too literal-minded to function in the real world? I enjoyed the solve, the emergence of the 17 was a nice finisher :)

I think "digit" is seldom used in casual conversation, and when people use it, they generally mean one of the numbers 1, ..., 9 (of course 0 is also a digit but I think many people forget that). Certainly the population of CtC fans whose native language is English will not interpret 17 as a "digit".

As other commenters have mentioned, that's not what he did. But it is fairly easy to memorize the order of the alphabet. I did it a few years back when I had to categorize things alphabetically for a few hours. As a first step, just remember the 10th, 15th, and 20th letters (J, O, and T. *Jot* that down and you'll remember it easily). Throw in the 5th digit (E) if you like, but I don't think most people need to memorize that one. Once you've done that, you can figure out any digit quite quickly without much counting. Want Q? Count up from O and you get 17. If you want to go further, start memorizing vowels and other common letters, and the rest will come pretty naturally.
