Phone Macro Photography | Lenses for iPhone & Android

The know-how and expensive equipment needed to get started with macro can often put people off. But it doesn't have to be this way! With only a couple of inexpensive smartphone lenses, mobile phone macro photography is a fantastic way to get started with macro. (It's also a pretty fun excursion for seasoned macro pros too!)

Apexel 100mm is a good product, excellent build quality and good sharpness. I actually found the iPhone7 coin photo sharper and better than the iPhone 12 Pro and other phones, not worth the extra upgrade money for those with older phones I guess.

I found the iPhone 7 picture sharper than the other phones too , very strange indeed my man and Apexel 100mm is way better for Macro photogryphy if you ask me , as you say it's a good product

iPhone 7 had the best picture of the little coin , what the ?!?! :D I got Realme X3 Superzoom , I hope the macro lens will be good on my phone :D

There are a lot of variables between phones and the different lenses that change how they look, not to mention all the software processing that each phone does to the image. I did find that the older phones held up surprisingly well though!

Hey Ash, I'm with you there as there was a time I wouldn't consider using a phone for stuff like this... but its actually very fun and far easier for some quick experiments or when you don't have your main camera to hand.

I'm definitely going to be doing this. I photograph the jewelry that I make to sell online. I will be buying a new midrange phone with a macro camera built in. But it's great to hear that I can use something like this if I'm not fond of the camera. The 3rd party app is a great idea, too. And I love the advice about the lighting! Very nice video. Thank you. How many times of zoom does the 100 mm Apexel lens allow the smartphone to get? I mean, when you put on the 100 mm lens, you immediately notice an optical zoom. Do you know how much is it?

So I bought the 100mm for my huawei p30 pro and really struggling with it. Can I still auto focus using it or just move it in and put? Amd do you use a tripod to hold the phone and pit it on timer delay to keep it steady?

Hi Nigel, I didn't find any need for a tripod once there is some lighting to keep the shutter speed up. As for focus, you will need to move much closer to the subject than you're used to otherwise the phone just won't be able to focus, though on the phones we have tried, limited autofocus still works once you're in range. If there is a manual focus option in the camera app you have, try that, it will take away the guesswork and you can just move the phone closer and further to find the focus point.
