This is what I teach through the ( Macquarie University) MiniLit program. I love it. I love watching the light bulbs flash on when students discover that reading is not a great big mystery. I thrive on watching and hearing their progress. I couple it with Cued Articulation for visual prompts and like you I do a lot of speech therapy style overemphasis of tongue, teeth and lip placement. Phonics works!

Thank you for your videos! I am a new volunteer teaching English at our local library to 2 adult Arabic speakers who know so little English they could not understand the beginner ESL class taught there. Using hand signals, I can communicate "listen" and "repeat" --- but I have trouble asking them to do something or to answer a question. I see you use hand signals effectively and would appreciate some hints on this. ( btw--You are an inspiring model. I appreciate the time and energy you have put into developing and sharing your skills!)
@JayRichardsonEACschool2 жыл бұрын
For zero level adults, look at using TPR (Total Physical Response). This puts zero pressure on the learner to speak, simply listen and response physically - do a little research it's very effective. Also, keep in mind that receptive skills will come before productive. This means your students wll be able to understand what you say (using TPR) before they can speak independently - this is quite important.

@JayRichardsonEACschool4 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. In British English they do sound different but, in American English I think they sound very similar. Maybe an American would disagree lol. For training students it can be challenging but I find using many examples over many sessions eventually helped. Remember, you are not in a hurry - Students do not need to understand in a single period.

@JayRichardsonEACschool2 жыл бұрын
In the first few levels of phonics I do not make any differences between the sounds - they are both /c/ Regarding the soft c I would teach that as a separate unit after they complete the 44 basic sounds and are already strong phonic readers - no hurry to move on to that part

@JayRichardsonEACschool3 жыл бұрын
Phonics instructions are exactly the same in either form of English (British / American). However, they do sound slightly different. Please look at my video on "Jolly Phonics For Beginners" for teaching procedures. The Jolly Learning company do have both American and British sounds in their products.
@iswaryakannan49633 жыл бұрын
Sir am really clear about phonics...but having one doubt, when to introduce long vowels for children ...I mean which age is correct to introduce? Because once they learnt phonics, vowels (5) & consonants(21), then two word letter of cv/vc blending, then 3 words.....after that people directly goes for sight words for improving reading skills, but here the problem is when they go for high vowels sound like see, coop they will start confusing...so thatsy asking when to introduce long vowels, this digraphs, r controlled vowels etc......
@JayRichardsonEACschool3 жыл бұрын
I would look at the jolly phonics for beginners video I made f or my channel. If you are teaching montessori style then long vowels comes after short vowels, but in jolly phonics it is more of a comprehensive programme and easier to teach.

Hi , Jay .Thank you so much for your video .i am a beginner and learning to teach phonics for my kids . but i have a question when i teach them the word 'STOMACH' ,the sound 'ch' is 'K' , not 'ch'. the word 'IRON' ,'l'is not 'i' , it should be made 'ai' . Can i tell my kids it is a tricky word ? or how to teach when the sound is different ?
@JayRichardsonEACschool3 жыл бұрын
I think your question is great... and so is your own answer. Yes, just explain that this is a tricky word. One great way to help them remember is for you to read it as written (which is incorrect) and have your kids laugh at you and say "NOOOO, tricky word you can't trick me...it's ..." (then have them say it correctly). If it helps, you can tell them that sometimes English is silly and says the wrong thing. Good luck and please keep in touch. Also, please check out my channel and share my videos. Thank you again.
