Good timing! I have a client that I did a shoot for no cost and they asked me what the license fee was. I had no idea how to write it up or how much to charge. I knew such a thing existed but didn't understand it until you explained it. I also liked the idea of how to sell it, as it's a way to reduce the client's cost while making a living wage from the work.

My first job in photography was with a fashion photographer. I had to help him with his gear but also his finances (I studied business administration). He skimmed of the top of all the people he hired for jobs (makeup, assistant, models, even studio rental, etc). I always thought it was sleazy and I aplauded when watching that part in the video

So, let's say you provide a 1yr licensing fee, how do you regulate it and see if they don't use your stuff after that 1yr? That I think is my biggest question

Thanks Scott. This is such a hard topic. Hard to wrap your head around as an artist that you and your work even COULD be worth these amounts of money, but at least as hard to explain this to clients who thought they would pay 1000€, but instead look at a 10k or more bill.

Either this video or another one related to pricing, you mention there's usually a negotiation against the rate from the AOP calculator. Would you share what that turns out to be on avg for most jobs? 90% of AOP figure? 80%?

Thanks Scott for your enlightenment on this subject. I'm wondering how the policing of licencing works in practive. Would there be a third party company involve to check they are not using the images beyond the licencing agreement. Perhaps this is undertaken by your agent?

haha good question. I am not entierly sure, I think a lot of it is down to trust nd the rest luck. I have walked past a billboard before and invoiced later and also had clients call me to add usage.

Really enjoying the videos - thank you. What, if anything, do you use to track client usage of images? Or is it reliant on the client contacting you to extend a licence for time or usage type?

Hi, Let's say you give to someone a photo as a favour, exchange of another thing, whatever. How do you give him/her the permission to use it? Do you know some sort of digital signature/agreement mechanism in order to avoid calling a lawyer and making a contract? Kind regards.

Pricing structure seems bizarre 😂 to use auditor as an analogy, who studied and practiced for years to get qualified, walks in to audit the accounts of an organisation post agreeing an audit fee (usually plus expenses) and afterwards was to say, here are your singed accounts and thanks for paying my fees. By the way, if you want to use these accounts to file in the companies house, to show them to shareholders, perspective investors or even to general public there would be a fee six figure “license” fee. I don’t think it’s going to go down very well with business or even the auditor for future business 😁

I believe that you're forgetting that - unlike commercial images which will earn the client vastly more income over time from advertisements, magazine sales, etc. - merely sharing those audit numbers with shareholders, etc. isn't going to generate any additional income for the client. IOW, I don't think an auditor's fees is a good analogy here.

Well first thing any prospective investor is usually interested in is “signed and audited accounts” so of course they’re important piece of document for generating any future investments. Still you get my point though I hope.... however if you insist, how about an architect was to ask for a “licence fee” on top of the charges for the design of a commercial building due to potential of the building generating income in the future. Or a builder for the same purpose perhaps. In fact, here is another good example, we recently engaged a firm to write a software for us and they did it on a pre agreed sum, what we do with that software was none of their business (we used internally and sold externally as well, ended up earning a fortune). I can understand a usage or license fee for using something owned by a 3rd party (because we weren’t party to the costs incurred in the creation) however never heard of paying for something to be created and then paying tens of times for using it,. Something amiss here! 😁

@@funnybones6131 Actually, both of our opinions on this are moot, as... The truth is (as Scott clearly states in the video) if not separated out in variable usage fees, then photographers would simply increase their overall creative fee accordingly. As he says - separating out the usage fees, actually SAVES many clients money as not all clients need world-wide, perpetual usage rights for every usage under the sun.

Nothing useful in this video . Nothing about selling the photos as publisher's rights which would entitle you to charge more . No explanation of this part of licensing
