Photographic archives or Art Galleries?

THIS VIDEO: Probably for most of last century, magazines and books were bought and consumed by huge audiences and photography was central to their success. By the late 1990s media had evolved to such an extent that there were very few strong publications left and the future of photography seemed vague and dispersed. In the early nineties, fine art galleries opened their doors to photography and for a time, art fairs were dominated by this medium. So, the question is, now, twenty or so years after this shift, is the greater photography community happy with where it has landed up. Are there other ways in which we can promote and develop photography and is the strongest work rising to the top. Apart from the art world, there has been a somewhat quieter initiative that has been gaining momentum. Over the past few decades an increasing amount of attention and funds have been directed towards expanding photographic archives. This development has in the main been spearheaded by universities, and other art-based institutions. Compared with the art world, this enterprise is the poor relative and it certainly doesn’t receive the same amount of hype. - but over time it might evolve into an alternative platform through which photography can be explored and developed - an interlinked archival network has the potential to become an alternative pathway for photographers or initially perhaps it is more likely that it will have a symbiotic relationship with the fine art gallery system. I don't often comment on youtube, but I have commend you Graeme. You are an absolute wealth of knowledge and a gift to those who are watching and can benefit from your insights. I remember studying some of Paul's work during my college days, and my best friend at the time saw one of his Bob Marley poster in my room, then he said, "hey thats Paul, we rent his out-house down the road." I seem to remember meeting him once or twice as we were always at my friend's place, though I wish I was older and wiser to have had some interesting conversations with him. Legend.

Such a video would have been most useful when I was academiclly involved with art history and theory. It was most interesting to listen to your conversation with Paul Weinberg whilst also watching examples of exhibitions and what was included in them.

Interesting discussion but I don't see a future in Landscape photo and Photographic archives, no human interest so it is only Art Galleries left for landscape?

oy first..are we going to have video of people in white cotton gloves handling cd's and usb drives?? ie: with digital - how is all this stuff going to be archived anyway? Next - so photographers big hope now is for someone to find all his stuff once he dies and maybe it gets shown someplace?? - that's weird. Whats also weird is taking a bunch of photographs - esp street or documentary photographs.. then plastering them on a wall so that people holding plastic glasses of wine and cheese on toothpicks can view it and comment on it..IDK..for me - trying to make photography into a statue or oil painting is a waste of time - it's not art..it's something different - it's photography

Very interesting, for me personally as a lowly amateur/hobbyist,my approach is to print it and give it away, some of it by random distribution through coffee shops. I appreciate that a good deal of it my be trashed but my hope is that some of it will be in the hands of future generations and saved for whatever values may then have evolved.

but digital brings up a lot of questions - like where is it (actually) will it be able to be read in 20/30/50 years or will that format be dead??? or will anyone even know your HD is filled with pix??? I print mine out into PoD books because I prefer to view photographs in the wild and not on little screens - so I have a dozen or so books that may survive the great purge upon my demise@@grahamrichards8531
