We went to Monterrey, Mexico with portrait photographer Stefan Ruiz to document the "Cholombiano" street culture of sticky sideburns and stoner cumbia jams.

individualism? That, like every culture or subculture, is a combo of many influences past and present. Beyond the obvious influence of Mexicano, Columbian Cumbia, and U.S. Chicano Cholo culture, the Cholobiano dance is almost exactly like Northern Indigenous fancy dancing, for example. I get what you're saying but American individualism is a disease in my view. These kids are deeply embedded in a very collectivist INDIGENOUS history and culture that just happens to still suffer from the effects of colonialism and modern capitalist imperialism. Yes, they're brilliant!

I think there's a lot more to this video than just whether you like the style of the kids or not. I liked that they showed the Rembrandt tie-in to the shot composition, his choice of camera (obv very specific, since it's old and not digital), his mobile studio, and how he's able to get people to agree to have their photo taken (not always the easiest thing to do). I think this dude is cool, approachable, level-headed, and I really like his style. I find it pretty unique when compared to most advertising/commercial photography. Great job, VICE!

I'm Mexican and I don't understand why people are "embarrassed of being Mexican" because of these kids. Everyone has different styles of clothing/hair. Just because it doesn't conform to your idea of "normal," or better yet, "civilized" doesn't mean you have to ridicule, embarrass or shame them for expressing themselves in their own way.

What an interesting documentary. I didn't know there were people from Mexico that have that connection with the traditional music like cumbia and vallenato from my country. +Eddie Licona I've scrolled through some of these comments and was really kind of amazed that no one else that I saw picked up on that aspect. He seemed like a genuine person with talent he took in his own direction, which is what you need to do to stand out. The fact that anyone would feel angry toward these kids, who seemed also to be mellow and just doing what makes them happy, they must be pretty fucked up to have nothing better to do, just sayin. I really enjoyed the entire story, to me it was about the courage to be yourself, and that could actually be a way to make a living and meet lots of interesting people. I would be proud to have any of the people in the film that felt comfortable sharing their unique lifestyles with me.

I love how he highlights the historical evolution of humanity's style/culture in his pictures by comparing the Cholombianos to Renaissance art. You can see how we have evolved through many different uses of our head to hair with hat ratios, in other words, the personal preference of physical, spatial occupation that is involved in the outlined framing of the individual's hair and hat position. It's a very interesting perspective, to say the least.
