Love listening to Jeff. He was the first photographer I watched on B&H years ago when everything was done on site.

Same, same on AF for the R3. Secret sauce on the AF back button. Range-based zap and hold on the exposure button. The focus point selection button is needed as is on this design. Also, something about programming the fps button seems to gum-up or slow the programming you've done to the exposure buttonj. Might just be my imagination, but leaving that one alone seems to work best. Great camera, but it takes practice to master it in real time.

Yep. Mentally exhausted over physically. There are too many things to think about when shooting sports. ... and you keep adding them. If you shrink your autofocus frame you have to retrain on your drill regimen to instinctively include the feet and so on. You've got 5-10 parameters like that which you're managing at once in your head... while the action in front of you is happening faster than you can speak. String that over multiple events in a day and you will be exhausted. It's much more survivable if someone is there to drive you home.

At min 5.34 i heard a "retoucher" being mentioned. What are some of the things these retouchers do or cant do . considering that the context is Sports photography (photojournalism)?

It depends on what is being captured. At the Olympics, it is basically exposure changes, white balance and cropping. Not much more. But the agencies also have people culling to find the best images out of everything shot. I am a one man band and do it all. but I love that.

I have a 40mp Leica M10-R and a Leica 75mm f/1.2 Noctilux lens and I'm perfectly happy. There's something seriously wrong with me, isn't there?

Not at all. If you're shooting basketball and you're about 30 feet out from the centerline, up at the end of the court, you can pre-focus to around net range and if that camera will focus fast you should have a few fantastic shots every game. Free throws will work too.

“Burst speed 30FPS.” Let’s ignore that Sony A9III exists because Canon sponsors us.

Is the Sony hitting 195fps now? Had not heard that.

@@frankfurter7260 Yeah that's pretty fast. I don't really use Canon's 195 and my quick touch speeds are single, 30 and 50. And the AF and edge detection really needs 30 to shine. If I were to give up Canon for Sony it would probably be because Canon's "Auto Lighting Optimizer" is now less aggressive than Sony's comparable feature. To do that consistently though, they'd probably have to pull back iso performance and in sports, ISO is king. There are certainly a lot of used Sonys being offered out there to try. The menu system and design thinking of Canon is hard to beat. The help line staff are great. On the R3 they push a lot out to your fingertips, but I could use an extra wild card button or two, like Sony has (without losing the existing ones that push things out to your fingers) just because there are a couple of things you'd like to dynamically tune under this design. Have always kind of liked the color bias in Canon, but the new R3 color representation is just better. Palpable difference. I hear the Sony also has very good color.

@@_SYDNA_ I don’t think people should switch systems absent a very compelling reason. Sony/Canon/Nikon all make excellent gear. I guess for a photog shooting sports 120FPS on demand is a very useful but I certainly wouldn’t switch systems for it. The global shutter is very appealing on the A9III as well. I have to think Nikon and Canon will both produce a camera with global shutter in the next few years.

Honestly, even 30fps is a lot. I only use this mode in extreme cases, otherwise I would end up culling through WAY too many images! :)
