Steve and Jeff - Another great show as always. A couple of points to clarify: Re: Eye Control: I never used to move my focus point. In fast-moving environments, I prefer to lock it in one spot (usually center-horizontal, about 1/3 down vertically). With multiple people in the frame, I find it quicker to point the camera so the locked focus is on the person I want. Using back button focus, I press the AF-on button to start focusing and can move around freely while the camera keeps that person in focus as long as I’m holding the button. Now, with eye control on the R52 (and R1), I no longer need to move the camera physically. I simply look at the person I want to focus on and press AF-on. This probably saves me a second or two, letting me start shooting faster - crucial in action photography, where timing can make or break a shot. As for People Priority: It doesn’t jump away from the person I’m locked on to focus on the registered person (Luke Combs, in my case). However, during the initial acquisition (before pressing AF-on), it will prioritize the registered person over the one I’m looking at. Note that registered person detection needs a clear frontal view. Hats or glasses can reduce accuracy if only the face was registered. I keep it on during Luke’s shows but still rely on eye control to focus on the person I want.

I’ve found the R3’s eye control to be good so long as I recalibrate with every unique environment I’m in (different lighting conditions). I use it to get the point there quickly and then let back button subject/eye detection take over. I have my eye control set to the first button on the right and I can toggle it on and off.

The R5 II is a worthy upgrade to the R5 for me. I setup a one touch acess to pre-capture with 30 frames/sec by putting it on C1 and assiging the M-Fn button to "Switch to Custom shooting mode". Whenever I needed pre-capture, just press the M-Fn button once, It will instantly goes to C1 (pre-capture with 30frames/sec). When I don't need it, just press the M-Fn button to go back to manual mode. No need to go into the menu. Work very well. Cheers.

an easy way to switch "pre continuous shooting" off and on is to setup Quick Control, so that when you press the Q button while shooting, one of the options is "pre cont shooting". still a 3 step procedure, but better than going deep in the menu. or can just turn it on in one of the custom settings

Steve, wonderful you are covering these topics with such a great guest. I remember a show you had with Rudy Winston where you talked about how the AF system worked. It was an in depth look and so revealing. Suddenly, everything was clear how it worked and why it was there. While Rudy isn't any longer associated with Canon (oh my, what a loss....) maybe you can find someone to redo this AF video for the R5 Mark II? Or do it on your own? Me thinks that the AF settings got a tad bit more complicated with this "whole area" and eye control stuff compared to the Mark Ones. Thank you!

What a great show with the amazing photos of Jeff Cable. Thank you for that. About the pre-capture, I can say for me as an Olympus photographer this is a lifesaver sometimes. Can't believe these are the first Canon cameras with this feature. I use it for at least 4-5 years now. Hope Canon will make a firmware update to allow you to adjust the time of the pre-capture and the frames you want to record. Sometimes you need 5, other times maybe you will want more. I think in general both cameras are great, I was thinking about the R5 Mark II as a hybrid camera, but it will be way too expensive for the whole ecosystem with a couple of lenses to cover the focal lengths I'm using now.

My solution to Pre-Capture on R5M2 (Don't know if @JeffCable tried it) is to save my sport normal settings to C1. Save the same settings PLUS precapture to C2. So I am taking my sports/bird pictures and then all I have to do to get precapture is to hit Mode on the top of the camera and go to C2. This takes half a second without taking the camera from your eye. It it is bad you cannot turn precapture on and off with a button, but this is the fastest way to turn it on and off.

Thanks for another great video! FYI ... around 27:05, you mention that the R5 Mark II AF is "sensitive both horizontally and vertical", which I would interpret (correct me if I'm wrong) as saying it has cross-type AF points. That is not the case. That is one of the big differentiators with the R1 which will have cross-type AF points.

Can you get this fantastic auto focus with EF lenses or do you also need to upgrade to RF lenses? (Haven't seen a review address this).
@BehindTheShot
@BehindTheShot 2 ай бұрын
Great question. There are some things the RF glass bring to the picture, being sharper edge-to-edge being one. IS specs partially depend on the glass working together with the body etc. But for AF, all the new tech features will work as expected. One key is that some of the newer RF is often faster at focusing, which existed in EF too, where some were just faster at AF, but overall the glass will work with the new bodies. If I’m incorrect on anything someone will correct me quickly, hahaha.

I think I've worked out how to assign precapture on/off to a single button press: customise the M-Fn button to C: Switch to Custom shooting mode, (this allows you to toggle between C1, C2, & C3) , then set up your favourite settings to both C1 & C2 with the only difference being C1 has precapture turned off and C2 has it turned on. Finally Untick C3 so that the M-Fn button only toggles between C1 and C2. (I had a 1DX mark ii before and used this idea to toggle between single shot and H+ shooting)

All great points, and yes, the camera does so much of the calculation and process work now. Still, a snapshot is always a snapshot. That intangible quality that sets a great photographer apart from a good or average one won’t change. We each have a photographic eye of our own that can’t be done in camera at all. A beginning kid will be able to focus more on the art and craft instead of the technical when learning, but in the end they will still need to learn that craft and art, and develop their own voice.

@@BehindTheShot Exactly, i just spend a weekend where i was hitting 6400 regularly, thanks to the subject matter (Festival) and LR denoise it's wasn't a huge issue. And thanks for this interview, most of the R1 content online is based on people reading specs or that 1 day session Canon had, it's nice hearing someone that has used the camera in anger. And i think Jeff nails it about the whole naming controversy, the R3 was a flagship (there wasn't anything better) and the R1 does that even better, and so does the R5MK2, so what's the fuss about. In any case, it seems to me that the R1 is 100% aimed at photographers and everything is about making sure you get the shot. Great question, with an unfortunately vague answer. It greatly depends on what or where you are exporting for. If you’re exporting for a client then that will be completely different than exporting for social media, and even for socials exporting for Instagram is different than X or another. Here’s an older (2021) article on social media exporting from Jeff Harmon of the Photo Taco podcast. He did really detailed testing. Still, each platform has a page with their own recommendations. I had always exported at 1024px on the long side at 80-100 on quality - usually 100 even though everyone says 80 is fine. The last year or so I switched 2000px, but saw an article the other day said 1024 was best still. Hmmm. So yeah, a never ending battle.

@@BehindTheShot I think it's going to be a bigger hurdle for Nikon than others. Years ago they were leaders in the sports cameras. Sometime between now and then they made a strategic lean into optics while Canon included a side trip into data science and maybe a little physics and ceramics. Sony comes from places adjacent to that world so it was a no-brainer for them. Canon's reduction in power consumption is a telling statistic going forward so I'm looking to see more from them. Sony is a tech giant but, in my opinion, Sony may face some organizational friction in refining their coproccessor that Canon will not. Coprocessor algorithms is where the headroom is right now so I think Canon still has some room to run and that's what Jeff was experiencing with improved lock-in on the R1. The comparison I mentioned is not from a research lab but it's not a bad research design for a KZbinr. You can find it if you search on "Who has the BEST? Canon R5 Mark II Autofocus tested and compared!" The comparison I mentioned is in the first 10 minutes or so. Unfortunatly he's using the newer Z6 iii to represent Nikon, but Nikon claims this camera has an autofocus on par with the Z 8 and Z 9. If so, the truncated results were seeing for Nikon are probably indicative of a weakness in coprocessing. They ran the R5 ii against the Sony A 7r V and the differences are symptomatic of differences in bandwidth and coprocessor algorithms. Would be interesting to see this against the A1. As I said above, I think Canon still has some room to run in this area. We'll see.

It would be nice to eventually have a scripting feature that allowed you to bundle settings so you can change 2 or more settings in one action (e.g. toggle FPS + recapture). I would guess that water splashing in front of the face wreaks havoc with the eye-detect AF. The technology now exists (robotics + AI + cameras) that would enable the creation of a totally autonomous robotic photographer. It is only a matter of someone having the resource for putting all the tech into one object. Most likely, pre-capture images use less battery than shooting one at a time.

Everybody talking about pre-capture like there's no tomorrow. I have had this on my R6 mark ii for years. R8 also has it.

Hey Thomas, yes, but it hasn’t existed at the pro and semi-pro body level like the 1 or 5 series. The 6 and 8 series are amazing but internally Canon doesn’t see them at that higher end.

Is the R5II better than the R3 for video? The R5II seems to be mirrored to the battery grip for cooling. Not sure I would go with the R5II over the R3. If the R5II is better than the R3 then how much better is the R1 over the R5II? It doesn't make sense for Canon to make the R5II almost as good as the R1 does it? So, according to this review the R1 is great but a little better than the R3 but the R5II would be a better choice over the R3 because the R5II is better. Something has to give. Which would you take to a high profile sporting event, the R3 or R5II? With your job on the line? Lol.

All such great points. I didn’t cover video here, as I’m simply not qualified to do it. I will say that Jordan and Chris at PetaPixel do cover that. For me, I’d 100% take the R5 II to the critical job. That active cooling grip alone could be the difference. Chris and Jordan do mention recording times and I think the R5 II would work great. The R1 may, if I’m being honest, be overkill for that use. Here’s a post I find that is interesting on the video side: www.provideocoalition.com/canon-r5-mark-ii-r1-hands-on/

I was going to get the R3 since I qualify for an upgrade discount. No discount on the R1 or R5ll. Too new. Now the R3 is stale? What a dilemma. Dont get me started on the missing RF300 f2.8. I cant afford the RF400. Im stuck.

I totally get it, Angel. I was actually thinking it when he said it, but as we also mentioned… any camera can make sellable images. If the R3 is a good price then it’s very worth it. It was on sale for $4500, but if you get an additional discount it may be the choice that’s best for you.

@@BehindTheShot The R3 can be purchased at Best Buy for $4,000. In store is lower than the online price. It doesn't make sense for the R1 to be a little improvement over the R3 but then the R5II is better than the R3. Increments of improvement don't seem to match up.

Interesting about the in store price you reference. Didn’t know that, and I just looked up the Best Buy price while answering another post. But again, for someone making a living with it that could be two or three jobs to pay the difference, and if you want the better eye control AF, or faster readout, or pre-shoot etc that could be worth it. For me…. The R5 II looks awesome.

The R5-2 is the same as my R5, which at roughly 45 MP is plenty. Along with my R5 (original) I also shoot an R6 (original), and while I love the R6 I definitely feel the lack of MP at 20.1. The R6-2 bumped it to 24.2, the same as the R1, and that a sweet spot for a lower count. Small enough file size, enough to work with on a crop, and faster turnaround when copying a lot of images. So to me, and I can’t speak for Jeff, one body at 45-ish and one at 24-ish is a great mix.

I still think the R3 is the best value comparing to the R1.. photo quality will be the same due to the sensor megapixel being the same. It’s a no brainer unless you are a professional and you always need the last tech.

more to image quality than megapixels. 5DSR would be the best camera camera ever made by canon if it was down to megapixels.

@@RayValdezPhotography sensor read out speed almost the same.. autofocus improved that much? What can you photograph with the R1 that you can’t on the R3? Noise levels will be the same too.. you get an improved eye track and the new auto capture. Not saying the R1 is not an upgrade to the R3 but if you go for value then the R3 have the best value for me.

The R3 is a fantastic camera. The decision is really what do you need / want, and is the value right for you. That will be a different answer for each person. Love that we have the choice.

Unless you don’t need that many MP. That’s why I carry an R6 and R5. I get both high and low. If you’re a journalist that needs that fastest turnaround then lower is better.

@BehindTheShot

Yeah, that is what my thought is too. Current pricing for the R3 varies, of course, but here are common retailers: B&H, Canon, Best Buy or Samy’s: $4,499 Adorama: Regularly $4,499 - Sale: $3,849 That Adorama price won’t last. So the “regular” price is actually $4,500, not $4,000. Refurbished is less of course. So yeah, it’s more common to see it $1,500 less than an R1, but if someone makes a living with it that might be one job. To pay for it. As with everything it really depends on what you need or want. EDIT: someone else pointed out that the Best Buy is $4,000 in store, higher than the online price. Still, depends on what someone really needs / wants. I’d find it hard to justify, but if the difference is paid with one to three jobs it could be worth it.
