Mike, another important consideration is the image stabilization of the various systems. For example, I shoot with an Olympus OM-D EM-10, the least expensive, but extremely capable camera in the OM-D line. The EM-1 and the EM-5 have 5 axis stabilization, the EM-10 has three. Any lens that is put on these cameras is stabilized by the terrific in-camera stabilization system. It does have a significant effect in enabling hand holding at wider apertures and slower shutter speeds. Best of luck in your quest. I think that most of your viewers would like to go on this journey with you, as you start to research the smaller systems. Cheers!

Completely agree with this, though it is only really a factor for Olympus cameras. I can get fully sharp images with my Olympus with 1/2 second shutter speed, and reasonably sharp up to 2 seconds. With my dSLR I had issues with anything below 1/30 or 1/60, depending on the weight of the lens.

some months ago I wanted to upgrade from my D40, (yes D40) and planned to buy a D7100. However, the sales rep at Jessops suggested I consider a Fujifilm X100S. After a lot of thought and research I eventually bought one and am absolutely delighted with it. Main reason apart from all quality of images is that I always carry it with me and have captured some graet shots which would never have happened with a DSLR because it would have been at home! Great videos by the way. Keep up the good work. M

Hi Mike, your comments in this video about prime lenses made me think of a problem I always seem to have when I'm out and about. My question is this, "How is it that I always seem to have the wrong lens on my camera for the subject I have just seen?" I'm not talking about the planned visits to places, but more about when just out on day trips, holidays etc. I'm working my way through the 7 building blocks material (i'm only on week one) and the problem my "brilliant brain" creates is seeing an image which means I have to change the lens, and by the time I have changed the lens the image has gone (subject's moved, light's changed etc.) or if i don't change the lens I only get part of the result i wanted. Perhaps you need to add an eighth block covering the subject of Clairvoyance in photography (knowing an image is about to present itself with just enough time to make sure that you have the right lens on the camera. (BTW the lenses I usually have are: kit 18:55, a cannon 70:300, a sigma 10-20mm, and occasionally I borrow my daughter's sigma 18:250). big fan of your work - thanks! Colin

Hi 1957bluesman Thanks for getting on my 7 Building blocks of Photography program. It's always one of those things when shooting fast and furious. You can't predict what's going to happen in that kind of environment. Weddings are like that so I have 2 camera bodies with me all the time, one with 18-70 lens and the other with 70-200 lens for exactly this reason. No time to change lenses. It's why I'm not a big fan of prime lenses. The quality's great but you gotta keep swapping them over - or look for shots that'll work for that length... Enjoy the rest of the 'Blocks' - you'll get more insights along the way..

Its a good system to revive your manual vintage lenses! I have a Sony A6000 with the Rokkor MD 58mm F1.2, and its an amazing combination - having focus peaking really makes it easy to achieve accurate focus and old lenses are way smaller then new age lenses (and cheaper) :)
@Hodja2710 жыл бұрын
Additional info: You can use your legacy lenses on these systems. Due to their thin size flange distance to the sensor is really low like 8mm. So it is possible to use any lens you want to use on this system with a suitable adapter without any loss of image quality. For example i am using my old Minolta MD 50mm f 1.7 lens on my Sony NEX-6 (with an MD-NEX adapter). Also with focus peaking feature it is really fun to use MF lenses....

I really don't like the electronic viewfinders. Another thing, at 14:00 you compare the camera to a full frame DSLR, where you should compare it to a APS-C sized one and you can get one for much less. You can get a D7100 (top of nikon's crop sensors) with a sigma 17-50 f2.8 across the range and still have a few hundred quid left. I don't know why but good quality mirrorless cameras are just too expensive.
@da1uth10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, EVFs are something to get used to. I understand if you dont like them. Still, I think the newer ones are actually pretty good - and they are REAL WYSIWYG, as opposed to optical ones where you DONT see vital things like exposure etc. - its really worth trying out IMO. And you dont need to take your eyes away from the viewfinder while changing settings as you can see everything right there.

I completely share your love of zooms, Mike! A zoom is freedom, a prime is a straitjacket. By the way, to me the smaller size of mirrorless doesn't seem to be an advantage at all. My Canon Eos 70D DSLR actually feels a little small in my hands. I guess I'm about your size, so I wonder why you like them. I'm sure my hands wouldn't much care for a mirrorless. And a mirrorless still wouldn't be small enough to fit my pocket, so I'd have to bring a bag anyway. Especially if I wanted more that just 18-55, not to mention speedlites.

I think you misunderstood him a bit about the Fuji's kit lens. It's not a constant f/2.8 across the entire range, but it's f/2.8-4 instead, so by the time you reach 55mm it "only" goes to f/4, which really isn't bad at all, especially for that price. Fuji does have a constant f/2.8 zoom lens in the works, and that will be a 16-55mm zoom, so it goes quite a lot wider actually. It will obviously be more expensive, but we'll have to wait and see for final judgement on whether or not it's worth it. And that lens is weather resistant, like the X-T1 body.

I have to thank Fuji for bringing me back into photography. You asked about younger photographers, I guess I'm not that old and I had a few digital cameras - I never liked them because I never mastered them and gave up on it. Also, I like street- and concert photography, and the most hated person in the audience is the guy with the DSLR in the front row. :) During my school days I used to shoot with a Pentax K1000, everything manual, build like a tank, and I always wanted something easy like that back. Then came Fuji and there it was, finally a camera I understand! Same dials, an aperture ring + retro look. With a €25 adapter I can even use my old Pentax lenses and bought a few more for about €10 each on ebay, hooray! Image Quality is wonderful, their customer service fantastic (major new features via firmware update after 2 years?!). Oh right, and it's sneaky. Nobody takes my X-E1 serious, most people think it's a small 70's Film camera. They're not for everyone though, I guess many who actually got used to modern systems might prefer Sony etc., last but not least because video on the Fujis sucks. As for the M43 cameras, the image quality is still very good in low light, not on par with the latest APS-C or FF models but nothing like a compact. My only issue with them is the crop factor, I couldn't personally go below APS-C, I like a shallow DoF. Anyway, long story short, everyone who never got used to menus, touch screens and too many functions on modern cameras, try those retro Fujis before giving up. :)

I wonder why you loved the Fuji if this was your first look? I would love to see you try out the OM-D EM1 as I've set my heart on one with the 12-40mm constant f2.8 M.Zuiko lens. Main reason is it's robust weather proof design is ideal for my hiking activities, often in the rain, and I already have a top end Panasonic flash. I like the multiple proper switches and the EVF on my Panasonic FZ200 is a joy to use, I like the way you see the output of the sensor, so effects of exposure compensation, WB, style etc can all be seen before you click. I very rarely use the LCD as I select menu options in the EVF, much easier if you need glasses to see the LCD and have the EVF set up for your eye. Oh, and in bulb mode you can see the photo build up and stop when the exposure looks right.

Hi Mike, thanks for the video! One argument has been left out unfortunately: With a smaller sensor, lenses can be smaller as well. So if size and weight matters, you should consider that. Of course you cant cover all info about mirrorless cameras in 16 Minutes, but there is some essential stuff the salesperson didnt tell you ;)

John Geary not true. Canon EF-S lenses are smaller than EF lenses because the create a smaller image, they don't cover the 35mm sensor. Similarly, M4/3 lenses are smaller again because they only need to cover an even smaller sensor.

Mike, was your mind made up before you entered the shop? Four excellent cameras, yet the Sony full-frame was quickly discarded, the poor Panny and Olly Micro 4/3s barely got a look-in. Presumably you did a bit of research beforehand, or did you just fall in love with the Fuji on the spot?

No I didn't do any research because I wanted to keep it real Saurat.. I had never even sen a mirrorless before that day. You have to check out Fujifilm X series cameras with the X trans sensor. The color and image quality are amazing, and ISO performance is incredible given the APS size sensor. My DSLR is on the bench unless I am going to be using the 400mm tele or the fast primes I invested in.

I've been using mirrorless cameras for several years. One advantage is the ability to hand-hold the camera in low light better than a DSLR. Since there is no mirror to move out of the way, there is less vibration in the camera- and in your hands during the exposure.

Glad i found this one Mike. Having done your UBC course last year and concentrated on the only 5 controls you'll need, i upgraded from a canon d1200 eos entry level to a canon M5 mirrorless system. I have 2 lenses currently, 15-45 mm f:3.5 to f:6.3 and 55-200 mm f:4.5 to f:6.3. I also have the canon adapter mount so i can use most other canon lenses with it if i so choose. This system works great for me at my current stage. All controls accessible without scrolling through multiple menus. Keep up the great work Mike.

Things not mentioned in the video from a guy trying to sell you a Mirrorless camera, big differences: Focusing systems aren't that great compared to DSLR. DSLRs using their mirror reflect some of the light into a dedicated focusing sensor that operates a high speed phase detect system that can focus in a snap. Mirrorless rely mostly on Contrast detection like point & shoot cameras do, with some higher end ones using rudimentary on-sensor phase detect points. Sony's new A6000 camera has made huge strides in the right direction with phase detect but is still not there yet. Small bodies mean small batteries. Not much to explain on that one, though some like the A7 series and X-TI do have battery grips available. Probably the most glaring inaccuracy about his pitch is lens size "adding adapters makes lenses bulkier", which is an off thing to say. Mirrorless does away with the mirrorbox and as a result the lens flange distance is much smaller than on DSLRs. Adding the adapters allow you to mount DSLR lenses and correct for the larger flange distance, but while you can make the bodies smaller you can't make glass for large sensors smaller without some compromise. For APS-C and Full Frame sensor size (GH4 is different because of a much smaller Micro 4/3's sensor) lenses of the same focal length and aperture size will be about the same physical size as on DSLRs because that's how large the glass needs to be in order to achieve that focal length and light gathering abilities, it's the physics of lens design. On Sony's A7 cameras, in order to make their FE-mount Pro lenses smaller, they've released 24-70 f/4 and 70-200 f/4 lenses instead of f/2.8, so that they're smaller and a better fit the smaller body. Basically, the adapters won't make the lenses like large telephotos bulkier because they will still need to be that large anyway. On the other hand, the shorter flange distance makes for much simpler ultra-wide and fisheye lens designs. And perhaps this is a personal preference of mine, but when using mirrorless with long telephotos, smaller bodies make for a more unbalanced feel, less to grip, harder to handle... That with their small batteries and poor AF systems compared to DSLR, they're not the best suited for sports, action or wildlife. They have killer image quality and for many things they're great cameras, especially for portability, or use with adapters and old manual focus lenses, but they're not replacing the DSLR completely just yet. I think once on-chip phase detection catches up, Mirrorless is the future, but doesn't necessarily mean smaller bodies and lenses, or the death of DSLR lens mounts. I'm somewhat thinking at some point soon we'll start seeing mirrorless DSLR-mount bodies, starting with entry level.

The Sony full frame A7 comes in three varieties from 12 MP to 36MP. THE 12MP is better in low light situations, almost being able to capture images is total darkness, Whichever camera you would select from the ones being shown, you would be able to get excellent IQ. Also with the mirrorless systems, you can interchange lenses from other systems, i.e. Leica lenses on the Sony camera, Olympus on Panasonic and vice versa. Mike, you should try out several cameras with a variety of lenses. Anyone, would produce as good an image as your D300. Olympus EM-1 with a 12-40mm 2.8 is brilliant.

Hello Mike. Love your videos. A thing that can be also mentioned is that with no mirror inside there is no friction and there are less parts of the camera that can go wrong. Also because there is no friction you also do not have to worry about the vibration that you get from the mirror actuation while taking long exposure or any other picture that requires that extra bit of care when it comes to vibrations. Thank you for reading and good luck with all your videos. Seen all your videos start to end at least twice and they helped me a lot in photography.

yeah. But then the downside is that the sensor is right in the open when you pull off the lens. No mirror there to shield it.

What I find most intesting about mirrorless systems is the tiny flange distance that they have. You can put pretty much any lens under the sun on these things with the right adaptor. Leica, Zeiss, Canon, Sony, Nikon, anything really. And most of them have focus peaking! So even though the lenses have no AF because of the adaptor (if you use an AF lens) you can still focus very easily and effectively. But I do still have a few issues that keep me from investing in one. First, the size. One of the reasons I switched from a D3200 to a D7000 was size. The D3200 was just too tiny for my big man-hands. It felt uncomfortable. Many of the mirrorless systems are pretty big as well, but they are just not as "grippy" as a DSLR. The second reason is the viewfinder. EVFs have come a long way but they still aren't perfect. When you look through an optical viewfinder what you see is what you get. No delay so it's always ready for you and it's not too bright or too dark. I'm just very happy with the DSLR formfactor right now. If they can give me something similar with a mirrorless system I would be game.

I quite enjoy it especially with the image quality that is very comparable to my old APS-C cameras and I hope you will have some good time with the new CSC cameras that are around. If I may add, the Micro Four Thirds system currently has the most complete range of lens choices compared to the other CSCs and that is one of the reason why I choose Micro Four Thirds among the other CSCs.

Just getting back into photography after years (ok decades) on the sidelines. Been looking at both DSLR and mirrorless as I'm not presently invested in either technology. I value image quality over focus speed and don't give a lick about video. No matter which way I go the thing I DO NOT want is to feel the need to scrap everything or buy a new piece every 6 months just to stay in the game. (Mind you I probably will, I just don't want to be forced into it) What I really liked about this series (on mirrorless) is that you obviously come from an extensive DSLR background and yet are open to the possibilities of this format. That's refreshing, and honestly a bit rare. Much more beneficial for lost and confused souls like me who are struggling to figure this all out. (FYI, I've narrowed things down to the D7100 or the X-E2 but I'm leaning towards the Fuji because of the amazing set of lenses, the crazy good 50-140 f/2.8 continuous coming out this month, and yes... the groovy retro-rangefinder looks) Love the videos and I just subscribed. (FYI, my only difference of opinion is that I found the video quality of the Fuji cameras in general to be rubbish. But, if I cared about that I would be looking at another line.)

One thing which is not exactly correct is his assertion that DSLR is still the standard for high frame rate shooting. In fact the lack of a mirror aids the smaller system here. The GH4 can shoot at a frame rate nearly matching the D4s and since there is no mirror there is no image blackout at all. Where they differ however is in the quality of the auto tracking which the D4 maintains a slight edge. So even there mirrorless is nipping right on the heels of traditional DSLR areas.

If you are referring to the Canon and Nikon full frame 1.2 and 1.4 primes lenses then you are right they cost (a lot) more, but then again you cannot compare them just like that. In fact, to get the 'true' aperture of the Fujis it should be multiplied by the crop factor too. Search for instance for "Tony Northrup crop factor" on YT to have it explained in detail (3 parts/videos). Of course it would sound too good to be true if Fuji could make a lot lighter, faster, smaller, and cheaper lens that still would be as fast as the mentioned FF counterparts, wouldn't it? Well, it is.
@skiwithandre10 жыл бұрын
PKGTI agree 100% with PKGTI, smaller sensors allow for smaller lens but you need to keep in mind that the apertures values from different systems can't be compared without first multiplying in the crop factor. Mike, you need to make sure this information makes it into your next video.

I moved from Canon 5d mk ii to a Sony A7, I wanted the full frame but if the camera is more compact I'm more likely to take it out everywhere I go. I find that I do take the Sony out with me a lot more, it comes with the standard 28-70 lens which has good image quality and I have a few vintage lens which I use via a adapter. The only gripe at the moment is the price of the lens for it, as the system is still quite new there are not many second hand lens avaliable so stumping up the cash for a new lens means I have to sweet talk the wife for a year and I just don't have the energy for that lol. I suppose if what you see in the final picture is a digital representation of what you saw then the fact you see a digital representation pre-photo should not matter. I'm with you though Mike, I would rather see through the viewfinder what I see when I look up. I can't quite get my head round why we can't have a mirror viewfinder and a mirror-less method of taking the photo! Or to put it another way, why the viewfinder must be digital.
@jamieparidian10 жыл бұрын
If you do decide to go mirrorless there is a much much cheaper option to the fuji x-t1. For around £650 you can pick up a second hand fuji x-e2(this has the exact same internals as the x-t1, so it's the same images you will get) and a second hand 18-55. Now that is one hell of a saving for the same image results.
@MikeBrowne10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the heads up Jamie Nowell does it have the same control layout and processor technology?
@jamieparidian10 жыл бұрын
It doesn't have an ISO dial but it's easy enough to access. The feel is better button wise, the xt1 is weather sealed so the buttons ain't great. You can control the xt1 from your phone, so that Is obviously a plus, but the x-e2 does have wifi. But yes same processor and sensor. I found your channel yesterday and already watched about 20 videos, I've learned so much, so thank you.

Is there a difference between MLRs and CSCs? Just declaration or is there a technical difference?
@MikeBrowne10 жыл бұрын
I've never heard the term MLR before Sven Kasirske - just googled it and can't find much at all other than it's a multi lens reflex which to me sounds more like a DSLR. Sorry i don't know the answer for sure. If anyone can shed light on this please post..

Mike Browne I meant DSLM. Sorry for the mixup. I too quick-googled and found out: csc=dslm. Are mirrorless worth the try? My set is still very small (2 lenses, a flash and a aps-c body) the sony A-series look good for their speed and inbuild stabilizer.

Hey Mike. Nc informative video once again. A couple of downsides of these mirrorless systems i ll like to highlight, 1) with no mirror u ll experience too much sensor dust. 2) after working for years with a traditional dslr or slr these compact camera would feel no good in your grip. It ll feel like driving a vespa after owning a harley for years. Hope u got my point. Thanks.
@dsdigitalgallery294010 жыл бұрын
And how can you hate primes...lölz.
@ke4uyp10 жыл бұрын
deepak sharma, Your statement about mirrorless cameras having more problems with dust is absolutely not true. I have been shooting with my Sony nex-VG10 for three years on a daily basis and I swap lenses multiple times a day. With any camera knowing the proper way to swap out the lens is critical. Keep in mind that the flange focal distance on my camera is extremely short only 22 mm. Sony cameras have automatic sensor cleaning every time you turn the camera on. Having a smaller and lighter camera means you will use it more hours with less arm fatigued that by itself is a good reason to purchase one.
@lukasdon000710 жыл бұрын
"1) with no mirror u ll experience too much sensor dust." Just not true "2) these compact camera would feel no good in your grip." Depends on tons of factors, e.g.: size and weight of body, what style grip the body has, size and weight of the lens, size of your own hands, etc. Because the lenses are much smaller, you don't need a chunky grip just to lift that bazooka-lens. In my experience, the light and small mirrorless camera's with a decent grip feel much more comfortable (especially after a day of hard work) than a chunky dSLR with an equally chunky lens. Only the grip-less mirrorless feel rubbish in your hand.
@dsdigitalgallery294010 жыл бұрын
ke4uyp, Its good you have a proper lens changing technique but there is more to it than just changing lens. Zooms have a tendency to let in dust and as of sensor cleaning almost every camera made for the last 3-4 yrs has a sensor vibration mechanism ( my nikon d7000 has 1) but if you shoot in rough climate like near windy beaches you ll realise that some sensor spot don't even go with a rocket blower. some of my friends use such compact cameras and they always complaint bout sensor spots. Even Mike's buddy Serge Ramelli ( if u follow his podcast is a pro french photographer ) uses a sony a7r system and is always removing dust spots in post processing. Secondly i love the weight of my dslr, it gives it a sense of balance with bigger glass. And its hefty grip feels more stable in my hands. Thirdly i hate the lack of optical view finder. Used my friends fugi n u can't pan with that thing. And still a limited range of lens available. At the end it turns out to be a personal taste. I am a sturdy guy love an old fashioned heavy dslr.
@dsdigitalgallery294010 жыл бұрын
If my budget allowed me to go ff, i will not waste a sec. As of street photography, some times you need to interact to the ppl or sometimes just stay away and use a telephoto. As i already said grip and comfort is a personal thing. I tried these compact cameras but they feel toyish in my big hands.

With a crop factor of 1.5 (APS-C), the Fujifilm X-TI's 18-55mm f/2.8-4 is like a 27-83mm lens on a full frame camera as Fujifilm points out on their website, but the f/stop is also increased by the crop factor of 1.5. This they do not mention. So this lens is actually like a 27-83mm f/4.2-6. This is standard trickery from the manufacturers of these mirrorless cameras unfortunately.
@ke4uyp10 жыл бұрын
The flange focal distance of a Canon EF-S-mount is 44mm But the flange focal distance of a Sony E-mount is 18mm Therefore for the same amount of photons exiting an E-mount lens toward the sensor, compared to a EF-S-mount lens the E-mount lens will be four times brighter on the sensor due to the inverse square law. Here is a perfect example of what I am talking about imagine a movie projector with a 100 W light bulb 20 feet from the projector screen if you move the movie projector 10 feet closer to the screen you would now only need a 25 watt light bulb to achieve the same brightness on the screen. Here is a different way to say this if the amount of photons exiting an E-mount lens toward the sensor is four times less compared to a EF-S-mount lens The amount of photons striking the E-mount lens sensor is approximately equal to a amount of photons striking the EF-S-mount lens sensor.
@Crashoverall10 жыл бұрын
And here I was, not believing that camera had that f/stop. It was too good to be true. Now it seems that its clearly explained.
@mellowmarkable10 жыл бұрын
Yes but why compare APS-C with full frame? In any case f2.8 is f2.8 in terms of exposure regardless of sensor size. Only the depth of field changes (which can be an advantage or disadvantage).
@ABT21210 жыл бұрын
mellowmarkable Indeed, but mirrorless camera manufacturers do compare their cameras with full frame sensor cameras. The tiny lens openings just can't let enough light in to obtain the same numbers as a massive DSLR lens. Those big lenses are big for a reason. They simply need to be.
@PKGTI10 жыл бұрын
mellowmarkable Francois Bertrand is right: unfortunately f/2.8 on a lens is even *not* f/2.8 regardless of the sensor size. It's only f/2.8 on a FF sensor. Combined with any other sensor size the max. aperture should be multiplied by the crop factor.

@ABT21210 жыл бұрын
By comparing these crop sensor cameras' lenses with full frame cameras, these manufacturers want you to picture a rectangle representing the full frame sensor. Then they want you to picture a circle in the middle representing the full frame lens' f/stop aperture size, say f/2.8. In the middle of the full frame rectangle, they want you to picture a smaller rectangle for their crop sensor, but they don't talk about their aperture. They don't ask you to picture a smaller circle representing their smaller lens' f/2.8. By this omission, they are effectively asking you to think the full frame f/stop circle is fit for their smaller rectangle, but it's not the same size.

Now, here's a historical video. This is the historical moment where Mike went the wrong way and chose Fuji over Sony. Ha ha ha. :D Just kidding... But seriously though, you have lost the ability to adapt a wide variety of lenses from the past. Lenses don't age. Lenses such as from Pentax, Minolta, Carl Zeiss - they produce amazingly artistic images. And modern sharp sensors are able to reveal their full potential. So, among other innovations, Sony has the shortest working distance, so you can adapt any lenses without any problems using adapters. A respected retro photographer like you would love this. And to choose crop sensor of Fuji? Strange... Anyway, it's quite interesting to watch this now in 2022. Pretty nice shop and helpful staff.
@MikeBrowne2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Max. It is indeed... I went for Fuji because I like the control layout. Sony tech is superb but I dislike the layout of their cameras and find them over complex. As for FF v Crop it really makes no difference to the viewed image unless someone is pixel peeping. ... MIKE🙏😊

No its 2x the pixels, because its taken from a different axis, 1080 is on the vertical line, but 4k is taken from the horizontal line.
@mstrainjr10 жыл бұрын
"Full HD" is 1920 x 1080, which is 2,073,600 pixels. The newer "Ultra HD" (a.k.a. 4k) is 3840 x 2160, which is 8,294,400 pixels. So what TalesOfWar (just above me) said is correct.
