Harry, you are so right in saying that sometime you need to just sit and enjoy the view. Just this morning was the perfect example for me. In my part of Canada we have only Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. The summer brings this little gems to our gardens and I relish the thought of that perfect shot. Today I just sat and watched as they hovered around a recently bloomed crocosmia. Serene, peaceful and a great way to enjoy these busy little birds.

Really impressed how Marcus flies through post. LR has a steep learning curve. You're truly a master if you only need seconds. I sometimes struggle with the advanced capabilities so why not limit yourself to the sliders which you completly understand.

great show, one tip, for the 'ben nevis' mountain try a field 4x5" camera, that way the shift, esp the vertical rise, will allow some composition adjustments, esp. if mountains,etc are in the way, or you cant get as square on as you would like, because of cliffs, valleys and the like; this also gives a perspective adjustment ( back standard), where object scale to each other can be adjusted as well as general perspective. One other main advantage, at altitude, the LACK of batteries helps, as they degredate due to cooler temperatures (reaction in the battery itself), so no need to keep them in the pocket until you are ready to shoot.

Olympus 75 - 300mm basic lens is a hand held 600mm ff equivalent and the results are surprisingly good !

But it’s not 600mm equivalent because it’s cropped to 25% of ff! You might as well use a 300mm lens on ff camera and crop down to the same size.

I found Marcus’ piece on post processing extremely interesting and helpful. I find that I have recently allowed my in-camera photography to become ‘sloppy’ in the knowledge that (hopefully!) I shall be able to correct any shortcomings in post processing!! Marcus’ emphasis on getting the photo ‘right in camera’ has given me the jolt I needed to try to do the same. I have already drawn the line at changing the sky, removing trees, inserting something that wasn’t there to start with, etc. I intend regaining the pride I used to have in my photos before I started editing my photos. I really found Marcus' editing helpful. Have to admit I shy away from processing a lot of my photos because editing has alway seemed to complicated. This was just what I was looking for. Dereliction is a great idea for an assignment or project.

Another entertaining and professionally put together show. One question regarding the digital darkroom section ... the profile correction tick box had quite an effect on the histogram. So should that done first, before the other adjustments?

Hi Julian. Good question. To be perfectly honest, it probably should be done first, but I tend to work from top to bottom with the sliders, so with my workflow it often gets done towards the end. If I notice that this changes the exposure, I will then quickly go back and make a subtle adjustment to the highlights or white point to counteract the effect. Also, putting in a post crop vignette will also solve the problem. Thanks for watching (Marcus).

Great episode, I really enjoyed this one especially the Dereliction part with great images as well. Re Marcus's editing, I go depending on my mood, sometime I can a whole evening editing multiple images sometime not. I noticed he did not use the Tone Curve, is that a preference or he just prefers the individual sliders? I sometimes use both. Thanks again for a great video.

Hi Victor. Personally I never use tone curves - they take too long. I find that the 4 band sliders offer more than enough tone control if you have the capture correctly exposed and have shot the scene in the right light. Thanks for watching.

Hi Hendrik. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. We don't include camera settings unless they are relevant to the feature. Camera settings are largely irrelevant unless you were taking the same shot in the same location at the same time. Camera settings (ISO, Aperture and Exp Time) are controlling the exposure, but the light changes, so these settings are useless unless you are shooting the exact same scene in the same conditions. Focal length is also irrelevant, as you would need to have the same camera and be standing in exactly the same location. So if we showed a photo and told you it was taken using a 50mm lens at f/5.6, with an Exp Time of 1/60th at ISO 400, this means nothing for any other photo other than the one we showed. Please don't assume that there is some secret formula with camera settings - there isn't. It's all about reading the scene in front of you and deciding what focal length, what aperture and what exp time you are going to need to get the desired result you want. You can then balance the exposure with ISO if all the other mentioned settings are set in stone. I hope this helps (Marcus).

I've noticed many of the videos covering photography in the UK feature the photographer hopping over fences. In the U.S. fences are generally regarded as the equivalent of a posted "Keep Out. No Trespassing." sign. Are the rules different on your side of the pond? If so, explaining how to determine the limits of photographic access in the UK, as well as rules regarding photographing people in public places, might make a good segment. You might also note whether any famous photographic subjects in the UK are protected from commercial use, as I understand the Eiffel Tower is. I invite others to "vote" on whether that would be something they would also like to see, or not, by reacting to this comment.

Hi Erik. Thanks for your comment and suggestion for a future topic (which is a good one). To answer the first part of your question, here in Scotland (not the rest of the UK) we have a law called "right to roam" which essentially says anyone can go anywhere, even on private property, so climbing fences and gates etc is all perfectly above board. The right to roam doesn't include residential land, so you can't go walking accross someone's private garden, but with farm land or any other non residential land it is allowed. Thanks for watching.

@@PhotographyOnline Wow! Thanks so much for the prompt response. That is quite a law. Scots surely must be well behaved as a whole. Here in the States, there would be trash, wildfires and law suits. (The roamer leaving the trash would accidently set it on fire, causing himself physical or emotional harm leading to a law suit against the landowner for having land that is attractive to roamers but lacking adequate signage as to the risk of roaming and failing to provide fire extinguishers at proper intervals on the property. :-) )
