My mother was the supervisor for the pass and ID division, under the provost marshall, at the main gate, Camp Pendleton California when the first Vietnamese refugees were bussed in for sanctuary in the camps that were set up at the base for them. She was given clearance to bring me to work with her to experience the transport. I was very, very young, and to this day, I can remember looking through floor to ceiling windows in my mother's office, watching the refugees faces as they slowly passed through the gates. I can remember their faces to this day, knowing they were safe and would be cared for. That was a powerful and unforgettable humanitarian experience.

What these photos at times show is how even soldiers could see the awfulness the civilians had to endure and chose to help rather than walk on by.
