I've already taken an honest look at the extra large Phrozen Sonic Mega 8KS ( • Phrozen Sonic Mega 8KS... ) but at the time, there were no settings available for me to test Phrozen's print speed claims. In this short video, I put these fully to the test, matching the model parameters, resin type and settings perfectly to see if, like so many other companies, Phrozen have been shovelling bullsh** when spouting speed results.

UPDATE... MEGA 8K AND OTHERS... According to Phrozen, faster speed settings shared in this video can only be achieved with the new Sonic Mega 8KS and not the Mega 8K at the moment. Similar speeds can also be noticed with the firmware updates for the Mighty 8K and 12K Upgrade Kit. However all the test were performed using our TR300 Resin. While the printing speed for the Mega 8K S is 10 times the normal speed, you can notice an increase of speed up to 6 times for the Mighty 8K and the 12K Upgrade Kit.

Id love to see these setting run on the original Mega 8K and/or without the ACF film. This comparison would truly put the line up and films in perspective. I jave a big project about to start that will fill the entire build volume of the original Mega 8K, so i might have to dive down the rabbit hole and try before you could get another video out. Keep the greta videos coming!

@Vogman, I can confirm the Mega 8KS prints to spec, but it splashes resin all over hell in creation while doing so. XP finder specifically drips and splashes upon raising the build plate upon completion.

Thanks for the update. Honestly, I think LPH is the way they should be advertised. MMPH really does not mean anything since layer size always changes based in print. But I am curious: Can you duplicate these results in alternative slicers? For example my anycubic is horrible with non anycubic slicers. Also have you tried to duplicate with other resins using similar settings?

That is super interesting. The layer lines do seem a bit weird or nearly separated on some pieces, but for anything but competition/Instagram painting or jewelry casting? This is pretty damn insane

Do remember this is just a 43 µm printer, and we've been spoiled for a while by much lower numbers. Also I have NOT fine-tuned these settings. I've just used exactly what I was told to use. So I think there's a little room for improvement, but I suspect for perfection slow is better - at least for now.

Wow! I'm impressed. Looked like you had a really short light-off delay setting. I'm curious if you did fill the build plate up, would that affect things? I'm thinking due to way more disturbance of the resin as the build plate lowers with a more filled up plate. Also was hoping you tested this with other resins, like siraya tech and a cheap one like sunlu!
@vogman
@vogman 8 ай бұрын
I think a fuller plate would slow things down a little, but it's fair to say Phrozen were very fair with their claims. I've not experimented further, but there's no reason why other low-viscosity resins shouldn't perform equally well, if not better 😁

@vogman
@vogman 8 ай бұрын
It is... for a printer this size... but it's important to compare like with like. Phrozen are saying Layers per hour. Other companies are saying mm per hour. Either way, for a printer this size, it's impressive speed.
@Bardghost_Isu
@Bardghost_Isu 8 ай бұрын
@@vogmanIMO (and maybe I'm wrong) it would be fair to say layers per hour is probably a more fair metric to measure printer speed upon. Because no matter the layer height I have set it will achieve the same amount of layers. However if measuring in mm/h that can be wildly affected by later height and therefore quite easily manipulated if a manufacturer wants to be shady
@vogman
@vogman 8 ай бұрын
I just wish these companies would all use the same metric to make comparison easier 😁😁😁
@ilikenothingtoo
@ilikenothingtoo 8 ай бұрын
Layers per hour is a better metric because mm's per hr can vary when you could be printing anywhere from .01 to .1 layer height, but 1 layer is 1 layer.

Wow that lifting speed. On my standard resin (which is admitedly very thick and slightly flexible Siraya Tech Blu) I'm lucky to get 35mm/min so 500 mm/minute seems insane to me. Makes me want to switch my NFEP on my old Mega 8k and try these speeds out with that resin. Oh, and look at that insanely low lift distance. You can see a ton of artifacts from the lack of rest time after retract setting though. Especially around the text of that mando base.
@youngswoops

Do you think there is a similar resin from siraya-tech. I have the mega 8k but would like to upgrade to the s if I can achieve close to those speeds in other resins. Thanks again for the review it gives me something to consider.

You're looking for a nice runny (low viscosity) resin. Temperature will make a difference and viscosity tend to drop when heat rises.
@lukearts2954
@lukearts2954 8 ай бұрын
Since the resin seems to be such an important factor and you like this resin so much, would it be possible to make a comparison between printers using the exact same resin? (it'll still give phrozen an advantage since it's their resin and their printers will have settings that are dialed in perfectly for this resin, but I'm sure other printers should be able to approach them, shouldn't they?)
@vogman
@vogman 8 ай бұрын
Actually Phrozen has not gone with a special resin, which is admirable. I think they've chosen their least viscous resin from their range, yes, but they've not made a special bottle just to scam folks. With that said, the Creality Fast resin is practically water, it's so runny, so maybe this would work better than the TR300.
@lukearts2954
@lukearts2954 8 ай бұрын
@@vogman perhaps this is a sign that there might be some norming coming up in this industry... I think it would suit both the users and the manufacturers to start using cross-brand norms. They will lose the scam income of proprietary resins, but I think they would win that back more with interchangeability of consumables and it would allow each brand to focus their development on certain aspects instead of having to be revolutionary on every corner and side of the product. Imagine you could buy the printer with the best Z-axis, pop in the screen of the brand that makes the best screen, and the tray and plate of the brand that does those the best... Instead of competing for the market with a race to the bottom on price and print times, we'd see a race to the highest quality. But that's just my wild imagination talking here hahaha

2:44 yes true but printing 1 has far less strain vs a filled build plate. I assume it would be ever so slightly quicker if less strain to break the acf and move up. It will likely be ms so unless the objects are super tall it would be negligible. Interesting to see if there’s a tangible a slow down with more prints ie 1 vs 5 vs 10 vs full plate. There probably a video just in that test.

I'm a strange guy... I hate waste... so I'd only print 70 of something if I really needed it. I agree this may have changed the result slightly, but as you say, slightly. I think it's a fair conclusion that Phrozen were accurate in their 900 layers per hour claim. 😁

Print quality, definitely not. The S3 wins hands down. As for speed, I'm not sure. Speed is not my favourite subject. Personally I prefer slow printing to achieve better detail, but it is possible, by experimenting with various resin and settings, to speed things along. For a newcomer, unless speed is vitally important to you, I'd recommend enjoying the standard performance of the S3. It's a fine choice. 😁
