Why are the dog owners adamant about having a guard dog? If they have anything valuable, then why have the dog with such a short rope, not feed or water it properly, leave it in the elements, treat him better and have him closer to the house, in better shelter? "The owners make no sense and grandma is stuck in her old ways" imagine this scenario for a second. Lets say you neglect cutting your yard and you let it overgrow. It becomes a nuisance to your neighbours. You know it and they know it. Then some guy comes to knock on your door and tells you that he would cut your yard for free because it is overgrown. in a vacuum, you would think wow, he would cut it for free? I'll take that offer. But reality is the implication. You've just been called out on your lack of responsibility through action. Someone came to you and made you feel like sht for not taking care of your yard by telling you they would do it. Implying that you can't do it yourself and it has led to me doing it for you. They probably did not think that way but you as the owner of that yard, will see it that way. Your ego and pride has been hurt. That is what is happening with the dog owners. The woman asking them to sell the dog implies that the owners have been treating it wrong and that hurts the ego of the owners. The lady coming in and getting them to sell it or disturbing them is putting a mirror to their face. Her presence and good treatment of their dog is showing them with action that they are terrible people. They are not selling it to her because their ego or character has been hurt. She is effectively telling them you are bad people without saying it to them and so the owners continue to resist and make asinine excuses like they need a guard dog. The grandma telling her they would sell the dog for 13K US dollars pretty much exposed their bad intentions. They would sell the dog if they can reap a large payout or with enough persistence, they would begrudgingly sell it so the woman can get out of their lives. Its all self interested.
