I was a little surprised to hear rubies mentioned for schist... When I was studying mineralogy, back in the early 1980s, it was categorized with sapphires, and as a slow developing crystal in igneous rock. I remember garnet had various colors, like pea soup greens, browns, reds, and blacks. I think there is a purple variation called Alexandrite, but I may be mixing that memory with something else. They develope in unique crystals shaped like a dodecahedron. Granted... science tends to change over 40 years (certainly faster than geologic time!), and much of what I was taught has had a metamorphosis of its own.
