Often times, people will try to do a plank but don't get a good activation of their abdominals because their back muscles overfire to compensate.
This exercise prepares your body to get full activation of your abdominal and other postural muscles so that you can decrease the compensations in your body when you do a full plank. Watch your posture improve too! We like to call this exercise Postural Rebalancing!

this is awesome; can you please do a follow-up; I don't quite understand the correct form; your bum seems to be up rather than in-line with the legs and torso; please explain

Yes. For this exercise, your bottom is allowed to be up in the air. As you lower it or bring your knees further back, the exercise becomes more difficult. Everyone is at a different place when it comes to their strength so find the appropriate height for your bottom and work your way down.

How would you do this exercise if you can't get onto your stomach or can't do a plank?

Good question! This exercise should be cleared by your local healthcare professional before attempting. However, an easier version of this would be to start against the wall and then on an incline and work your way down to the floor. However, if you are having difficulty assuming this position, I would have the pain or limitation addressed before performing this exercise.
