Physical therapist assistants, sometimes called PTAs, and physical therapist aides work under the direction and supervision of physical therapists. They help patients who are recovering from injuries and illnesses to regain movement and manage pain.
Physical therapist assistants are involved in the direct care of patients.
Physical therapist aides often have tasks that are indirectly related to patient care, such as cleaning and setting up the treatment area, moving patients, and doing clerical duties.
Duties
Physical therapist assistants typically do the following:
• Observe patients before, during, and after therapy, noting the patient’s status and reporting it to a physical therapist
• Help patients do specific exercises as part of the plan of care
• Treat patients using a variety of techniques, such as massage and stretching
• Use devices and equipment, such as walkers, to help patients
• Educate patients and family members about what to do after treatment
Under the direction and supervision of physical therapists, physical therapist assistants treat patients through exercise, massage, gait and balance training, and other therapeutic interventions. They record patients’ progress and report the results of each treatment to the physical therapist.
Becoming a physical therapist is a dream of many. Unfortunately, becoming a physical therapist requires many years of education and usually a lot of debt.
Becoming a physical therapist assistant typically requires an associate's degree. They also end up with a fraction of the debt physical therapists tend to accrue.
Physical therapist assistants (also called PTAs) work under the direction of physical therapists. They help patients manage pain and recover from injuries.
They have several roles and responsibilities:
• Observe patients before, during, and after therapy, noting the patient’s status and reporting it to a physical therapist
• Help patients do specific exercises.
• Treat patients using a variety of techniques, such as massage and stretching.
• Educate patients and family members about what to do after treatment.
What is the average salary of a physical therapy assistant?
This data is from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The salaries do not include overtime, bonuses, benefits, signing bonuses, or commissions. The data does not include physical therapy assistant's that own their own companies (very few if any do).
It is too difficult for governments and organizations to survey the incomes of business owners. Only the IRS and accountants really know the incomes of business owners. They don't make that information public.
In 1999, the Bureau of Labor Statistics recorded the average base salary at $33,690.
By 2019, the average base salary increased to $58,520.
This is a wage growth of $24,830 (or $1,242 yearly) from 1999-2019.
The estimated 2020 base salary would be $59,672.
Average salaries by state range from $41,350 t0 $69,480.
Here is how the 2019 salary breaks down by percentile.
The starting base salary would be around $33,450 (10th percentile) and up to $47,690 (25th) percentile.
The top 10% of physical therapy assistants start at $80,840 and go up from there.
Physical therapy assistants do pretty well compared to similar occupations.
How is the job market for physical therapy assistants? Is this a growing field?
This is a rapidly growing occupation. The government is predicting a 27% increase in the number of jobs over the next 10 years (this was a pre-pandemic forecast).
The number of jobs wasn't affected by the financial crisis in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Many consider this a recession-proof occupation. The pandemic may affect the number of jobs for physical therapy assistants. We will see when the data comes out next year!
In 1999, there was 48,600 employed physical therapy assistant.
By 2019, the government recorded 96,840 employed physical therapy assistants.
From 1999-2019, the number of employed physical therapy assistants doubled, adding 48,240 jobs.
Certain states have far more jobs than others. Texas, New York, and Florida have a lot of jobs.
The aging baby boomer generation is expected to drive the need for more physical therapy assistants.
In this video, Stephen Hack talks about Physical Therapy Assistant statistics nationally and across the United States. “How much does a Physical Therapy Assistant make?” and “How many jobs are there for Occupational Therapy Assistant” are important questions for people trying to choose between different fields. Physical Therapy Assistants play a vital role in our society.

First off I’d just like to start by saying thank you for making this video! The info is very informative and accurate. I am currently a PTA student and have just 1 semester left. In Massachusetts (greater Boston area) my schooling costs roughly $14k, maybe another $1000 in books, and that’s it! As for covid the only PTA’s that have struggled are some and I emphasize “some” outpatient physical therapy clinics that were closed at the beginning of covid. It was for maybe 1-2 months and now they are all back to operating with good outlooks even if it spikes again. PTA’s that work inpatient care (hospitals, nursing facilities, acute care centers, etc) all had job stability during covid. The schooling is the hardest I’ve ever attempted in my life, but it’s totally doable and once you find your rhythm you will love it. I’m beyond excited to graduate and work outpatient rehab starting July 2021. Thanks to this video I now have better insight on where job demand and high pay areas are. Thank you!

Hi I've been thinking about becoming a PTA! Do you know of any risks to the profession? For example, laws that would restrict the growth/salary of PTAs?
@CareerWatch
@CareerWatch 2 жыл бұрын
I am not aware of any. No AI/automation affects it in our lifetime (in my opinion). If anything, laws would encourage more growth.

@@CareerWatch Ok thanks I was asking because I heard of some law for Medicare or something and I couldn't really understand the video but the mood seemed to be bad for PTAs

If you are a graduate of physical therapy without the doctorate degree will you be able to work as a physical therapy assistant or do you still need to study?
@CareerWatch

The barrier is the license. A state has to license before you can begin work. So even if you take coursework and graduate, you still have to get that license.

How do you become a physical therapist without a doctor degree? I never seen that at any school program. DPT is the minimum to a PT because they are doctors 🥼.

Coming from a current PTA student: the only PT’s that are working without a Doctorate degree are ones that are grandfathered in. For example if someone got a masters of PT in 1995 they can still practice as a PT. In the early 2000’s it changed to a doctorate and from there out you can not become a PT without a doctorate.
