Love your lessons. I would add, the term medical doctor applies to both MDs (who attend allopathic schools of medicine) and DOs (who attend osteopathic schools of medicine). They take the same (or equivalent) boards as MD grads and attend the same residency programs for training! I'm not a DO, but they experience a lot of bias. I believe much of that stems from a lack of understanding about their credentials.

The word “doctor” comes from the Latin verb docere, which means “to teach” or “a scholar”. The title was originally used in the Middle Ages to describe distinguished scholars and was highly respected. Physicians adopted the title "doctor" in the late 1800s. Much like the LGBT community hijacked primary colors.

Fantastic lesson, teacher! As a retired middle school ELA teacher, I’m impressed with your clarification of these often confused terms. I am also pleased to see the correct pronunciation of the word “doctoral”. I cringe when I hear doctoral candidates say “doc-torial”!😵‍💫😩

This is sooo important to know. There is a difference between a chiropractic doctor giving you medicine and a physician prescribing you medicine.

Chiropractors are not licensed to prescribe medications.

DNP's have added more confusion, as they are "doctors" and "nurses" that can prescribe medications. Also, physician assistants (who may also have doctorates) can prescribe medications. This is a new concept (with these new degrees) that could be beneficial to teach to the kids.

I’m a dentist, I have a DDS degree, doctor of dental surgery, I sign prescriptions with just my name, but people don’t think dentist and veterinarians are real doctors anyway

My daughter received her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. So she is Dr. M**** M******, DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine).

And by the way, for anyone thinking that vets aren’t actually doctors, the four years of vet medical school is parallel to the four years of medical school for humans, except more intense, and includes many species. Vet med school includes oncology, surgeries, anesthesia, neurology, nephrology, orthopedics, pharmacology, cardiology, and much more. My daughter specializes in Emergency & Critical Care, performs life-saving procedures, and informs her patients’ frantic, worried owners. Vets are definitely actual doctors.

@@chatkins4930 Awww. And that’s unfortunate. My niece is studying HARD right now in veterinarian school. She’s wanted to be a veterinarian ALL of her life. And she’s has work long and hard to do just that. So when she graduates, I for one will be calling her Dr. J (her name is Jordyn). And as far as dentist, one of my FAVORITE doctors is my dentist. 🤗💜💫✨🤌🏾

I HATE it when people mix up PhD doctors vs medical doctors! My mentor has a PhD, and when I talk about him , people think he's a medical doctor...NO HE IS NOT! He taught English at my university, and JUST retired in May. I am VERY close with him and take offense to that.

That was totally confusing lol. Let me wrap my head around this. A doctor can prescribe medicine. A Physician cannot. If im sick i go to a physician. He wont be able to prescibe me medicine? Why go to him, and not straight to the doctor? Why have physicians that deal with medicine in any capacity? Just have doctors who prescribe medicine or not. Lol
