Jim Kakalios takes a closer look at the physics of the DC universe. Here, he reacts to 11 memorable scenes from DC movies and rates them based on their accuracy.
Kakalios addresses physical feats of DC superheroes, such as Joker in "Suicide Squad" jumping from an extreme height into a shallow vat of acid and Harley Quinn in "Birds of Prey" skating behind an automobile at high speed. He looks at the realism of superheroes' incredible skills, such as Aquaman's ability to sonically communicate with sharks and other fish. Would Shazam be able to charge up a mobile phone by shooting bolts of lightning at it? What material would Wonder Woman's bracelets need to be in order to deflect bullets?
Superman and Batman come under scrutiny in the video. Kakalios looks at Bruce Wayne's cape's rigidity in "Batman Begins" and whether it would allow Batman to fly across Gotham City. Would Superman be able to turn back time by flying around the world? Why can't he see through lead in "Man of Steel"? And finally, what are the odds that both Batman and Superman have mothers named Martha? Kakalios calculates the odds from "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice."
Kakalios is the author of three books, "The Physics of Superheroes," "The Physics of Everyday Things," and "The Amazing Story of Quantum Mechanics." He also worked as a science consultant for the Warner Bros. film "Watchmen" and won a regional Emmy for the video "Science of Watchmen." A physics professor at the University of Minnesota, Kakalios teaches a popular class that uses comic books to illustrate the principles of physics.

I always wonder about super speed. The ability to run at X amounts of speed doesn't just mean your body can go that fast but it also means your brain has to be developed enough to process the environment. Due to that, every speedster should/could basically be looking at the world as if everything was moving at a snails pace because their brains are processing things at "1,000" times faster than the normal brain and at the same time they should also be mega geniuses.

Yay physics! Thank you for breaking these down so well and giving excellent insight. Though I wanted to discuss the Martha controversy further. To be fair, we live in our universe and not the one where Metropolis and Gotham are cities so it might be that in that world there are still a lot more women named Martha. Okay but seriously, the probability of both their parents having the name Martha is low but it does not matter what their mother's name is. The main probability we are interested in is what is the probability of two men having mothers with the same name. This is because if Clark had said "Save Windy" and both their mothers were named Windy then the effect on the plot would be the same. This is akin to the statistics professors make up exam. Two students say they were not able to come in for an exam because they had a blown tire but really they needed extra time. When they come in to take the make up exam, the professor tests them individually and has only one question on the exam: what tire blew out? It has always been canon that Bruce's mom was named Martha and Clark's mom has been named Martha since the 1950s. You calculated the probability of different comic book writers randomly writing two characters who had mothers with the same name. Though things this random appear to happen. I don't think they purposefully made these characters have mothers with the same name so that a move over half a century later can make it a plot point.

Honestly, they should have this guy look at the "comic book" versions of these heroes! It's ridiculous how much films nerf characters of that sort. Case in point; If "Birds of Prey" Black Canary was anywhere as strong as she is in the comics, she could go toe to toe with Wonder Woman....and of course, use her screaming ability without fainting.
@jimmoryaty6903

@@jimmoryaty6903 Keep in mind, I said she could go toe to toe with Wondie; As in, she has enough speed and skill to keep up with her in a friendly sparring match. If it were an all out brawl with nothing held back...then of course Canary would be beaten to a pulp. But that's beside the point; What I was mainly saying was that the version of Canary in "Birds of Prey" was a severely underpowered depiction of the character.

WW's strength is one thing, but what about her eye sight and reaction time to be able to see bullets coming and to move fast enough to deflect them? Relative to the bullet, she's not moving very fast in those scenes so those bullets pretty much have to be shot right at her bracelets. If I'm the gunman I'm probably going to notice that and aim for her legs or something.

The russian T-34 for example was also made to withstand small arms fire but every grenade with a calibre over 50mm was a threat of breaking the armor and cause it to turn into shrapnell for the crew - because the steel they used was too brittle

So can you tell me how Batman would find who's Superman's mother when he thought Superman was just an alien who came out of nowhere?? Batman didnt see him as a human. He thought Superman was someone who came with a plan to trick this world into war and destroy it or conquer it. If Superman said "save his mother", things would be completely different. Batman will think that Superman is just trying to mess with his mind. But Superman wasnt trying to mess with his mind. He said "save martha" because even if he died, he would've given Batman a clue about who he was supposed to save.

No one: Me: Hold on a second, why doesn't x-ray vision get a higher score...Clark can in fact generate light from his own eyes, which seems to be the requirement for the x-ray capabilities...in conclusion he's just toning down the distructive capacity of his heat/laser vision to gain x-ray capabilities... isn't that a miracle exemption🧑‍💻... I recommend an upgrade to 8/10. Me: 👀 it was in that moment I knew I became too involved in this video 😂

He should’ve lost MORE points: How are the x-rays getting back to his eyes? when you get an x-ray, there’s an emitter on one side of you and a photographic plate or computer sensor on the other side to receive the radiation and form the image. maybe some tiny fraction of x-rays deflected by electrons would bounce 180 degrees back, but then the total dose of radiation would surely be lethal.

A couple of points I would make. 1st: Flash uses the speedforce to accelerate time, that would speed up neurotransmision too so it wouldn't be a problem. In the comics it even states that he can think faster do to the speedforce effect. 2nd: Flash was running along a curved wall, that would change his vector creating a centrifugal force and giving him his own "weight". No need for gravity to give his feet grip in this particular wall run. 3rd: if Clark's eyes were the source of the X-rays they would go through the things he is looking at and wouldn't be able to receive them. There should be another source for these X-rays so Supes can look at them. Loved the video though. 😛

And by the way, could you ask Professor Jim to do an episode breaking down the DC Multiverse? With String theory and multidimensional branes and how Darkseid came from a different world than ours? Or how Superman flies in "Man of Steel" (by manipulating gravitational fields with gravitons, which is why snow particles were levitating around him?There is so much potential for a video. @darkdraagoon
@darkdraagoon 3 жыл бұрын
Cause to stick to a surface you need to have force that push you into that surface. So if Flash run first and he use the force to run, he will push himself away from the wall and there is no force to push him back into the wall to keep running like that. Example would be you get a string and attach something to one end, spin it around but then let go. The object will fly away from you. The flash will be in reverse which he will fly to the centre instead of sticking to the wall.

His estimate for the speed in the first segment (falling from a large height to a shallow pool) is WAY off at 44m/s. If you fall from 5m gravity accelerates you to 10m/s (that's 36km/h or 22.5mph). if you fall from 20m, gravity takes you to 20m/s (72km/h or 45mph). In his example, falling from 11m gave 44m/s??? In what universe?? :P

Only because he's trying to accommodate a general audience that includes the US, where he lives. If he was just talking about this for fun with other physicists over coffee, they'd likely be mostly metric.
